You sound like a real jerk. Kids don't come up with stuff like that on their own and certainly wouldn't be so disrespectful to his mother unless he was following your example. Congrats.

He's 14. The kid can come up with that on his own.

Let's see....there's Protestant Christianity, Mormonism, Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Islam, Agnosticism, Catholicism..... Yup, it's just pure chance that he and his father happen to agree on atheism, despite the fact that something like 95% of people on this planet believe in a higher power his son came to this all on his own and believes it so strongly that he feels compelled to berate his mother over it. Maybe in some circumstances, but this guy is snickering at his wife when his son makes a very disrespectful comment towards her because his son made a rude remark he agreed with.......then posts to hundreds of people about it.........that tells me a lot about his mentality....more than just what he says about himself.

ZING. He's got a point there.

People of religion are always extremely offended when someone doesn't agree with them. That is one of their biggest shortcomings.

Just Christianity? There aren't any other belief systems which you feel are harmful?

I'm still trying to figure out how a Christian and an Athiest can live together to begin with. Unless your wife is a really crummy Christian who just doesn't care about her churches teachings, she should feel like she has a "God given duty" to convert both you and your son.

The same can be said of people without religion.

Getting your feathers ruffled is a natural, yet ugly, human response to being disagreed with. Politics, religion, even car threads end in the same stupid way.

I would like for this thread to be marked as Exhibit A and request that it be admitted into evidence.

What kind of person are you raising if you teach them that your unproven beliefs are better/more accurate than someone else's unproven beliefs?

What kind of person are you raising by teaching them things that contradict science and logic?

What kind of person are you raising if you teach them are some people will burn in a fiery pit in hell just because they did not believe in an invisible man?

I could go on and on and on, but you get my point.

I used to be a devout Christian when I was a kid, I went to a Catholic school, did the whole shebang, became an atheist at 16, and I can say that's you cannot really understand how stupid Christianity is until you develop the courage to question it from an unbiased perspective.

Oooooooh, didn't expect an intelligent response from Sir-Troll-A-Lot, did ya? Well you got one. :p

And regarding my first post on this thread, it was more tounge in cheek. I don't really think we should imprison people for what they believe. But I do think forcing religion onto a kid is "child abuse" although it should not be against the law.

She probably was a "crummy" Christian, who later was called back to her faith. The OP has likely remained the same.

And your example just totally defeats your original point. Kids should be exposed to things, even if the parents or the child don't necessarily agree with it so they can experience it, learn it, then decide for themselves. I am a card-carrying scientist (analytical/research chemistry) but I also think religion should be taught in school so students can learn how to analyze different modes of thinking and be aware of various lifestyles, regardless if they agree with it or not.

It's called critical thinking.

True, but thoes of religion are much more prone to a negative reaction. Major religions tell you that you -must- believe it, because there is no other way. No need to roll your eyes.

As for people without religion most don't push their ideals on others. Sure there are thoes that do go and preach anti-religion, but thoes are fewer than the religious folks who push and sell religion. I constantly see churches trying to recruit people to their following, but I have not seen an athiest try and recruit others to their non-belief.

Personally I don't care what religion you do or do not believe in. In all honesty it's none of my business, but time and time again religious followers are just so inclined to tell me what religion they follow.
In my experience I've had more religious people get angry at me for stateing that I do not believe/agree in their religion. I have not seen (in real life) a person of no religion get angry at me for not agreeing with them on their beliefs, or lack thereof.

For the record I'm not an athiest, agnostic, christian, jew, muslim, catholic or anything else. Try not to pigeon-hole me into a group.

Hi Mr Scientist, in case you were not previously aware, there is a difference between being taught the "facts" about a religion, and being taught that a certain belief is the "one true" belief.

Most all parents who force Christianity on their kids at a young age are not teaching them the religion out of history text books, but teaching the beliefs and commonly shared opinions themselves as fact.

You know, just theoretically, it could be that 95% of the world believes in a religion because they never were even offered the idea that they could choose not to be religious. Just because a lot of people are religious doesn't mean that anyone who isn't religious has been manipulated into being that way. It's just faulty logic you're using. Now, I'll grant you that it's likely that the kid got some of it from Durok, that doesn't mean he forced it on him or anything. Are you arguing that it was Durok's job to actively deny him info about other opinions on religion?

It's entirely possible for a kid to come up with atheism on his own. See JLGatsby (above, although some may say using him as an example for anything might be discrediting your point) and also myself. Both of my parents were/are religious people. I was brought to religious ceremonies and made to sit through them. Maybe this doesn't fall into the same category as DurocShark's SO, but it's still very possible.

On a side note, I still remember the look on my parents' faces when I told them I didn't believe in God. Luckily for me they're reasonable people, but the look was just priceless.'

Edit: I also don't think that since 95% of people on the Earth believe in a higher power, it should be assumed as the normal, and atheism as the contrary. Just consider other things people in the past have believed were true, the first thing that comes to mind is the "flat earth" theory, geocentrism etc.

1. Yes, according to your religion even the majority of those who claim to be Christian are doomed themselves. As the Bible says, what is faith without works? 2 Billion worldwide "claim" to be Christian, but everyone knows nowhere near that amount actually goes to church or actively practices it from day to day.

2. You're playing stupid. You teach that your morality is the "correct" morality and that all other moralities oppose the "creator of the universe."

3. Science? Is it possible to feed 5,000 people with one basket of bread? Is it possible turn water into wine with just a few words? Is it possible to rise from the dead?

Logic? Is it logical to say that an invisible man in the sky created every human being without their consent and then forced them into a life they did not ask for, and then forced them to adhere to a certain docterine/moral code, leaving humans with no way to escape their life or the afterlife? Is it logical to say god created faulty humans (he created us as we are, as it says in the Bible, he knew us before we were born) and then blamed them for their own mistakes?

4. What about faith in themselves? Faith in their own judgement?

5. Why not? Because you'd know it would make you look ridiculous. If you really believe if what you preach, shouldn't you be warning people that they will spend the rest of eternity being punished in hell? Think about that. Are you not grasping it? Do you not take it serious?

If someone knocked on your door tomorrow and said "do this for me or I'll beat you with this baseball bat." Would you take it serious? I bet you'd be scared, I know I would. Why are you not taking "eternal damnation" as serious? That is a HUGE statement to make. If true, certainly that is the most important warning anyone could ever receive.

I wait your responses to all my points.
