Coming from Texas - I do have to truly believe that Chili is defined under the "No Beans" rule. That said, I grew up under chili with beans. Kidney beans to be exact.

I recall trying a chili without beans that absolutely ruined my taste of ever trying it without beans ever again. It was basically... watered down with meat inside with some tomato and shit. To me, I like chili to be THICK. I like it to be flavorful. I like it to be spicy. Maybe even with some cheese on top :p So maybe if it's good enough I can try to switch to the whole "no beans" style, but that would take a chili cook-off or something.

A small amount of black beans, some pork added to the ground beef for extra flavor, and a little bit of beer. Yum.

I grew up in Ohio, and my mom always made chili with beans. Then I moved to New Mexico for 4 years. I learned what Midwesterners call chili is a joke compared to the do all sauce that is red or green.

I put beans. I like adding 1 can of garbanzo beans as well as 3 or 4 cans of kidney beans to batch (using 3-4 pounds of ground round)

Do you ever hear the term "Chili con frijoles?"

No. You hear the team "Chili con carne."

Meat is technically the "optional" component of chili. Beans are never the "optional" component of chili. My preference is BOTH.

My family always had beans in the homemade chili. My wife now makes chili with beans. A such, I'm partial to including beans. Although, going to the local chili place (I'm in Texas) I notice that it is always sans beans. Still very good, though.

Yeah I would think for chili to be good without beans it would have to be very thick and filling on its own.

IMO, beans are delicious, filling, and healthy, so I'm all for chili with beans.
