I actually like the SS charger version alot.
Just hate the tail lights. Does not go well with the rest of the car.

The Chevrolet Cobalt is a very good car. Every single review I've read of it has been glowing.
That's really helpful, especially since the reviewers are doing nothing but reviewing first impressions. The cobalt is going to be like a chick you meet who's hot and awesome at first and then turns into a psycho bitch. The cobalt will probably all but fall apart in around 6 months and from there on be an unreliable piece of horse's ass like any other chevrolet econobox.

Regarding uniqueness you will never have it with an econobox. If you want unique by yourself a delorean. How is having one of 800,000 cars meaningfully more unique than one of 2 million? The car is a grocery getting A-to-B. Uniqueness really has no role in making a good decision on a car.

if side airbags are that important look to VW. I know they've had quality issues, but if you drive a VW and a cobalt and still want the cobalt there is no hope for you :D

Are you kidding? Korean cars have the worst depreciation of all cars.
Not true, at least not anymore. Hyundai is considered best value in economy car, most reliable, right behind Honda.

The Elantra is also considered one of the safest in front offset impacts. Not bad for a <$14k car.

a big fat NEGATIVE

so you want to take a chance and buy a new american car...? go ahead and flush your money down the drain. the old cavalier was such a dog that i wouldn't consider buying one no matter how cheap it gets.... it's pretty much on par with the old saturn compact on terms of crappiness.

i'm sure that the cobalt is an improvement over the cavalier... but i can't think of a modern american car that holds it value... i'd take a look at any used corolla, civic, protege, focus, jetta... etc etc if you want a compact.

Not bad looking at all. Way better than the Cavalier. For that price range, I think the Scion tC would be the better buy.

Perhaps in your definition. One of the definitions of enthusiast on dictionary.com is a person who has a strong liking for something. I like reading about cars and I like looking at them. I'm an enthusiast. Doesn't mean I have to want to buy whatever is most fun to drive like most other car enthusiasts.

AHAHAHAHAA!!!
Yup .

Methinks you have no idea what you're talking about.
Actually the NEW Kia Spectra has received rave reviews. Car and Driver loved it, as well as Motor Trend. So actually that guy knows quite well what's he talking about. Do you?

Uniqueness is definitely a factor for some people. Benzes or BMWs wouldn't be all that impressive if every household owned one.

Wait wait wait...

If Kia designs a nice new car (with rave reviews), instantly their suspect past is over looked?
If Chevrolet designs a nice new car (with rave reviews), it is still considered crap?

i wont comment on the cars that i have never really ridden in nor seen in person. but, you seem to be doing that. I saw the Cobalt last year at the Cleveland Auto show, it has a very nice interior and very nice overall. Everything anyone has written about it seems to be very very good.

Not IMO. Kia designs a nice car, so yes, the past is overlooked because everything has been changed in the 05 model. Same with the Cobalt. Some people may be bashing the Cobalt simply because it's Chevy. I'm not, I'm just saying everyone will have one and they'll become very common.

Just you. Take a look at the Cobalt in person- it's pretty unique for a Chevy.

That said I sat in the Cobalt coupe today and it's just a little too small for me. It looks like the Elantra GLS 5-Door is going to be my purchase. $14k loaded, everything except the moonroof (which I don't need).

I would not buy it simply because it is GM. As an ex contract employee for this company, I can tell you that majority of the procedures and operations on the IT side DO NOT MAKE ANY SENSE WHATSOEVER.
The Chevy Cavalier and Poncrap Sunfire had/have terrible, terrible crash test ratings and it is quite possible that Cobalt will have bad safety record as well..
American Engineering :(
Also, interior of that car looks ugly and did I mention that new generation Civic is a best pick in terms of the crash tests?
Civic rules

I am actually quite suprised to see that so many people are just not concerned about the safety.

Toyota Corolla crash test

Mazda 3 crash test

Perhaps you should focus for a second.

I'm the one telling the OP to consider a Kia. Xionide's the one laughing at the suggestion.

Yup, there are badge enthusiasts too.

Which isn't to say that both companies don't make a quality car.

It's a new car.

Do you want to be GM's beta tester?

Either wait for some reliability figures to come in, or go with something that is known to be good.

I am? Look closer. That's not me.

I wouldn't go for a Kia Spectra simply because they've got the worst front impact rating. Hyundai Elantra is pretty good for the front, but awful for the back.

Yeah...that's weird that the two would have different ratings...considering they have been differently styled permutations of the same basic car. Except Hyundai is releasing the newer, presumably worse-protected Elantra later than they did the Spectra

The Elantra had some problems which were corrected when discovered. I don't know what the deal is with the KIA. Why bother? The Elantra is essentially the same car as the Spectra except cheaper. I can get a loaded Elantra 5-Door for $14k.

Still, the "poor" rear impact rating bothers me. I wish I could afford a Subaru Impreza.

at a $15,000 price point for a new car it is hard to find something that isn't common...

Well, duh, buy the $15000 car and bolt $5000 of crap on it, so you can be a Unique and Beautiful Snowflake! :p

Yeah, the only reason I'd even suggest it is the Elantra's redesign which is supposed to happen this fall...

Yeah man , go with a Civic. Barely any of those on the road.

I would stay away from the Cobalt as no one has done a long term review on the vehicle. GM vehicles are notorious for having many problems in the initial year of production.
