This car looks pretty good. Looking for something new in the $15k range. I have been looking at the Elantra 5-Door as well.

The Cobalt coupe has more headroom/legroom in the front, so I will wait to test drive that, coupes are hard to find right now. I also have the GM Family Discount, so that is part of my consideration.

I would rather have a Subaru though, but I just can't afford it. They are hard to find around here (Boston area) and they pretty much cost the same used.

it looks ugly. the elentra GT will have a better interior, is probably more reliable, and definitely has a better resell value than the cobalt. chevy spent all this time to advertise something that is even inferior to the ford focus.

It's probably a decent car for a decent price but it looks as plasticy as any other Chevy. Oh and btw the Chevy names is going to be dragged in dirt in Europe now since Daewoo is going to be sold as Chevrolet.

Hmmm.... maybe that's good? :Q

Wait one year and the Elantra will be redesigned...and your car's street value will take an ugly hit...

Can't wait? Check out the Kia Spectra

The Cobalt is much cheaper than an equivalently equipped Focus.

Hyundai seems to be the only one who offers side airbags standard, which factors into the price. The Focus equipped the way I'd want would be well >$17k- I would buy a Impreza if that was the case.

I do like the Elantra 5-Door. You get alot of your money. But the GM discount is nice too.

I don't care about resale value, and Kia just got rated worst front offset impact.

not to mention it is unique and has leather seats. if you want an american compact i'd buy used... a used 03' focus can be easily found for $9000 with low low miles.

I think it looks pretty good for the price.

Funny how people correlate their personal opinion on looks with the actual quality of the vehicle. Kind of makes their opinion worthless if they are bias from the get go.

I wouldn't buy the vehicle, but for the price it seems like a reasonable car.

Not a bad looking car, much better than the Cavalier. I never liked Sedans. Get the coupe :).

I already mentioned I was planning on the Cobalt coupe because it has more front leg/headroom than the sedan. It actually has more cabin space overall than the sedan too. Most people think sedan means more space- Not the case here.

I would go for a 5-Door Cobalt if they offered it.

:), I need to read the whole thread before commenting, sorry.

Which model are you going to get? I know they offer an SS version which is supercharged :).

I need to test drive the coupe before I decide. Coupes are hard to find. I suppose because coupes don't sell as well as sedans GM isn't rolling them out as fast.

I'm not really looking for a performance car, just reliable transportation. The Elantra is very appealing to me because of what you get and the warranty. The Cobalt just seems like a nice car. With my discount I can get the Cobalt w/auto+ABS and side airbags for about the same price as the Elantra.

The Mazda3 is out of my price range, also in the same range as a Subaru. Rather have that Impreza RS Sport Wagon- 165hp, AWD would be perfect for me.

There are a few domestics I'd consider buying and the cobalt sure as all sh*t isn't one of them. Buy an import if you're looking for an econobox.

Care to explain your reasoning. Is it simply because it's domestic?

Mostly yes (because I've never been in a domestic econobox that I didn't want to immediately get out of), but although you have a price limit set at around $15k if you drop merely 10-15% more money into the mix your options open up massively.

The Chevrolet Cobalt is a very good car. Every single review I've read of it has been glowing. Just check any of the auto magazines that have come out in the last few months. It's a very good car for the price. Good looks. Powerful engines. Excellent interior. It's hard to find fault with.

Just go drive the car for yourself. Don't trust what idiots on the internet have to say, especially ones who have not driven it, and probably know nothing about the car.

As it happens, it's astoundingly good?an Olympic long jump for GM, from dead last to the head of the class, right up front with the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic. You may have already gleaned that from our first Cobalt preview last July. We alluded to superb interior trim that mimics a Volkswagen's; the fancy hydroelastic rear-suspension bushings that pacify the ride (and cost GM $30 extra per car, according to vice-chairman Bob Lutz); a cabin soundproofed to luxury-car stillness by multiple door seals, molded acoustic pads, and 37 pounds of laminated "quiet steel"; and the Euro-'spensive Continental and Pirelli tires.

Over the twisting trails of Santa Barbara County, a Quaife-equipped SS laid the power down smoothly and ate the apexes with fast reflexes and stable course control. The Dodge SRT-4 supplies more horsepower and torque for a few hundred bucks less, but it's a rough-and-tumble street fighter. The Cobalt SS Supercharged trades on its refined civility, two words we don't normally associate with a GM economy car. But then cobalt isn't a metal we normally consider precious.

Whether it's the base sedan or the hopped-up SS, the Cobalt accomplishes Chevrolet's mission of producing a vehicle that can take the compact car fight to imports and domestics alike. Ultimately it's the consumers who will decide, but from our brief time with the cars, the Cobalt has the refinement, features and performance to make a decent show of it.

Anybody who recommends Nissan's aged Sentra or one of the Korean crap mobiles over the Cobalt knows little about cars.

The problem with Chevy is no matter what you get, every dude and his brother has one, too. There's way too many of them. Impalas, god, I'm so sick of them! I see one every ten feet!

Cobalt is a bit different, offering pretty much all the basics as standard. I would add only ABS/Side Airbags to the basic package.

Hyundai is the exception, most of the foreign brands are no better. - Toyotal is terrible, almost everything is an option. I went to price The Matrix and by the time I added everything I wanted it was >$18k.

But you have to consider uniqueness. Who wants a car that everyone else has? I must see at least twenty Cavaliers every day on my way to work, which is only seven miles away. Same with Impalas. Cobalts will become the same.

Right now the Cobalt is new, and there are barely a few thousand of them on American roads, out of several hundred million vehicles.

If one wanted to have a unique vehicle, this would seem to be it.
