Checking the receipt on the way out of a B&M

If it's a membership-type of store like Costco, then you have (probably) agreed to this in your membership agreement.

Otherwise, at "normal" retail stores, compliance is strictly voluntary. If you don't WANT to show them your receipt, tell them NO and keep walking. If they try to restrain you, THEY are the ones breaking the law. (do be sure you're not stealing anything, because the cop will probably check the receipt against your purchases anyway)

These establishments have the right to ASK you to show them the receipt, and if you don't mind doing so, then that's fine, but they do NOT have the right to FORCE you to do so.

I hate this thread.

People walking out the doors within unpaid for stuff is ridiculously common & the most common type of theft in many places.

People like you clowns in this thread who feel you should make their life more stressful by not showing a receipt piss me off...

If you've already paid for the item elsewhere in the store, you can skip the line, show the cashier or checker at the door as you head out.

But ffs, have a little respect for the people get in shit when you are an idiot & don't let them check your receipt.

I don't own the store so why should I care?

Seriously people, get a life. OOOhhhhh, you told a walmart greater to fuck off, aren't you all big and bad. If you don't like a store's policies, don't shop there. If you really want to be a hard ass, there's other things you can do that are tougher than hastling some 80 year old woman checking receipts.

When I spend 20 minutes waiting in line at Wal-Mart to buy some bread and cold cuts because they've only got two fucking registers open, I'll be damned if I'm going to waste another second at the door so they can make sure I paid for $5 worth of food. Unless I'm shopping at Sam's Club or BJ's, I tell the receipt checkers to fuck themselves unless there's NO LINE.

Looks like we got another tough guy here.

Yep, and these same people will bitch about prices being raised to make up for people walking out the door with stolen merchandise.

Store policies don't over ride law.

There are plenty of things that aren't against the law to do, that doesn't mean you aren't an asshole for doing it.

Wal-Mart here is understaffed, they've never got more than one person at the door, they usually don't check. When there's a line, I walk right on out. What's so "tough guy" about that?

n7, I really don't have a problem, particularly in the case where I purchase something and pay for it in a department far from the front registers. However, when I go through the check-out, and walk 20 feet through an area that only customers who have gone through the check-outs can walk, and am expected to wait another several minutes for the people in front of me to be double-checked, and then for me to be double checkes? That's a ridiculous imposition on my time.

In that case, it's not shoplifters that they're looking for; well, not exactly. They're looking for people with items that have scanned wrong, i.e. someone peeled a sticker off a cheap item and put it on a more expensive item. Or, they're looking for things that a cashier skipped ringing up (to help a friend.) There are other solutions for both of these problems that don't require the customers to give up their rights.

If I'm the only person going by the person double checking, then it's not really going to affect me too much to pause for 15 seconds. But, when it's going to be a couple minutes - my time is more valuable than that.

You are correct in what you said, but they ARE looking for shoplifters as well. A common practice is to just pick up a receipt from out in the parking lot, go inside and load up your cart, then just walk out the front door holding that receipt that you found in your hand, hoping that whoever sees you walking out the door just assumes that receipt is for the merchandise in your cart.

Back when I was younger, before I became a cop, I worked in loss prevention. I was never a receipt checker, but I caught plenty of people using that exact method, it's pretty obvious when you know what to look for.

Look, I understand that some of you might not want to wait that extra minute or two, I get annoyed as well, but it's the stores policy and if you don't like it then just don't shop there. If the loss of paying customers outweighs the potential theft then they stop checking receipts.

If that's all that's been angering you then my bad, I was sarcastic about the f themselves thing. The only places where I HAVE to stop for receipt checks are Sam's Club/BJ's/Costco; otherwise it's completely at MY discretion whether or not I've got the time to stop.

In practice it appears that they do. This is exactly the point the OP makes.

qft .I hate it when good comments are buried under endless yelling and shouting.

Is there a conveyor belt involved ?😕

I can understand someone possibly thumbing their nose at " the man" in the OP, but when you defy social convention to such an extreme, you're just being an ass.

I just keep walking. I get yelled at every time at Frys. Too damn bad, I am not waiting. What I bought is now my property, they can reserve the right to review it all they want, but I have to agree to letting them do it. Reserving the right does not make it legal. I can reserve the right to have sex with any woman that walks within 30' of me; and wear that on my T-shirt, but if they don't agree it is still rape.

The only place I stop is CostCo, because I agreed to it when I became a member. And they are fast with checking, you don't get the huge line at Frys.

There was a thread over on AR15 (where EVERYONE hates the reciept checkers, and are proud of it) where a checker asked an arfcommer to show his reciept. He said, "No," and continued walking out the door, at which point the reciept checker grabbed at the arfcommer. The employee grabbed the arfcommer's pistol under his shirt, and arfcommer whirled and smashed the guy in the face, then called the cops. Store employee ended up going to jail for some obscure offence.

store should have trained their employees more thoroughly...

... in the art of self defense.

After I've made my purchase, I tightly clutch onto it and yell: "Cry havoc and let loose the dogs of war!"

Then I run for the door! Kids, old people get knocked aside as I go forth....

/show no mercy....

if you want to let them search your bags, go for it, but go diaf for acting like you are taking the high road in your stance. If someone doesn't want to give up their rights, fuck yourself for telling them otherwise. If you are/were a woman, would you let them search your personal bag as well?

and stop double and triple posting like an ass

You have not legally purchased the item yet, so no.

Really? you mean people walking out with something they didn't pay for is the most common type of theft at places? What other types are there, I am just curious?

They can have a little respect for my rights and deal with the fact that I sometimes refuse to relinquish them.

But, my point was that they must be either oblivious, else completely retarded if they can't filter customers by who went through the cashier and who didn't. It doesn't take that much attention to see if someone's gone through the checkout and actually paid the cashier vs. someone who didn't.

Think of the layout of most stores though....

Wal-Mart: Usually upwards of twenty checkout lines, receipt checkers are at either of the two exits if it's a Supercenter; they can basically only see the express lanes.

Sam's Club: Long walk away from the checkout aisles, and they don't bag anything, so one could load up a cart and walk right out.

etc...
