Checking the receipt on the way out of a B&M

Why do customers have to wait at the door again after waiting in line for the cashier?

I understand they want control just in case a 'cashier-friend' 'forgets' to scan an item and just put it in the bag. But the managers should find another way to catch such cases rather than making us wait in a single line like idiots.

Today I was getting out of Fry's and there was a long line at the cashier (as always). After paying for 15 items I didn't want to stand in front of the door like a dumb-ass with my plastic bag wide open so they can peek inside. So I just walked past about 6-7 people waiting in line. Of course the rep calls me out "Sir, you need to show your receipt, please wait." I, passing out the door and showing him my receipt, said "I'd rather not to." Boy that felt good. I wonder what the people who were waiting for the check did. I hope they all ignored the rep and move along.

You can thank your friendly neighborhood shoplifters. If it weren't for them, B&Ms wouldn't find it more cost effective to hire door checkers. Parents also wouldn't have to put up with toys that require a gazillion plastic ties to keep them attached to the box they come in.

I don't think they can make you stop and show anything unless it's a club type place like Sams where you sign up and agree to their terms of service.

I think it's annoying as hell too. I don't mind unless there's a line. No way I'm waiting in line forever to give them money and then waiting in another line to prove to them I already gave them money.

The stupidest one is the one at Costco or Sams Club. I've got $400 worth of groceries and this guy is going over my receipt that is 18 inches long and my flatbed and find amongst that pile that I have an extra jar of pickles.

This has been a standard practice at all Costco's for at least the past decade. It usually takes bout an extra 30 seconds....

You must have a very dead store. At the Sams I go to, there's generally 10 people waiting in line to get out the door and one 80 year old lady with bad eyesight trying to count every item in every cart that people have to make sure it matches the number of items it shows on the receipt. That's the part that pisses me off.

If they had enough people checking receipts that I didn't actually have to stand in line to get out the door I, and most other people, wouldn't care.

I actually went to costco the other day and they found a mistake- I bought 2 bottles of the same wine, but they only scanned one...they treated me like it was my fault. I honestly had no idea it wasnt scanned, I wasnt really paying attention. They had to get a manager to write up a new ticket and charge me for the second bottle...

I don't get the point. They never actually pay attention to what's in your bags anyway.

fry's gives the door people a reward for each misrung receipt they find. considering they make around or about minimum wage, find 4 mistakes per day ... not a bad way to pad your paycheck.

along with finding items that are "mis-stickered" as those garnered rewards too.

that's the way it was when i worked there eons ago. i doubt they changed it that much.

So 4 errors in an 8 hour shift...so 1 every 2 hours

That's still pretty sad and petty.

I was actually caught one time when I asked and received different stepping CPU (same speed, spec) Door-guy noticed it and it was all mess. I didn't mind waiting 15 minutes but I felt bad for the guy in the cage.

Costco and Sam's are worse. They actually go one by one. Considering people buy huge number of items there, it's usually a long wait.

Anyhow, we shouldn't be asked if we refuse to show the receipt, that's my take.

it's not really a huge deal, and it's quite obvious why they do it. So just deal.

The guy caught that a case of water did not get scanned when I went there last week, and our cart was very full too. It was on the bottom shelf of the cart, and I think he was focusing in on that when scanning the receipt.

They can't make you stop, period. If anyone puts their hands on you they are in deep shit (this is battery). If they try to detain you in any way (by blocking your path but not physically touching you) they are in deep shit (this is false imprisonment). If anyone in the store attempts to intimidate you, threatens or yells at you because you refuse to stop they are in deep shit (this is assault).

At no time do you sign a contract with the retailer giving them permission to search you or your belongings (including the items you just bought and the plastic bags you are carrying). At no time do you sign a contract with the retailer giving them permission to detain you for any reason. Even if you did sign some sort of contract it would not hold up in court - private contracts are still accountable to the law.

Get the fuck over yourself and just show them the receipt. It takes 5 seconds and you are on your way. Grow up people

Ever shop at CostCo?

I believe it's a requirement under the membership agreement there. At a regular B&M store like Fry's you're not under any obligation to undergo a search of your bag/cart after you purchase the items. pisses them off though 😛
