I don't think they can make you stop and show anything unless it's a club type place like Sams where you sign up and agree to their terms of service.

They can't make you stop, period. If anyone puts their hands on you they are in deep shit (this is battery). If they try to detain you in any way (by blocking your path but not physically touching you) they are in deep shit (this is false imprisonment). If anyone in the store attempts to intimidate you, threatens or yells at you because you refuse to stop they are in deep shit (this is assault).

At no time do you sign a contract with the retailer giving them permission to search you or your belongings (including the items you just bought and the plastic bags you are carrying). At no time do you sign a contract with the retailer giving them permission to detain you for any reason. Even if you did sign some sort of contract it would not hold up in court - private contracts are still accountable to the law.

Get the fuck over yourself and just show them the receipt. It takes 5 seconds and you are on your way. Grow up people

He's 100% right. But you go ahead and keep submitting to retarded store policies.

The point is not whether they can or cannot legally stop you from walking out without having your receipt checked. If you go into a store like Costco, you KNOW your receipt is going to be checked when you leave. It helps them keep their shrink lower so they can offer you lower prices. If you're not willing to abide by their rules, don't shop there. If you shop there and aren't willing to abide by their rules, you're an asshole.

Shrinkage is part of what is called "the cost of doing business" and companies figure it into their overhead. Lets get one thing straight, stealing is wrong, it's just plain wrong. No one is complaining that companies are trying to prevent theft, that is their right. What people are complaining about is being ordered to show their "papers" and have their person searched by an agent of the corporation. The government is not allowed to do a search without probably cause and neither is a retail corporation. Simply shopping at the store and giving that store business does not give them a right to search you.

That's right folks. If you value your rights, stick up for yourself and refuse illegal searches then you are plainly, according to mugs, an asshole.

Zeigen Sie mir Ihre Papiere!!

Let's not get too much emotional into this.. no need for a complete sentence in bold. Appreciate your comment though.

What's so difficult about this?

You're making a conscious decision to shop at a place of business that requests its customers stop to have their purchases checked. If you do not want to agree to that request, patronize a store that does not attempt to check receipts. Nobody is forcing you to shop there.

Why would you even shop at a store if you don't like their business practices? You talk about standing up for what is right and having strength in your convictions, yet you'll patronize a store that spits in the face of those convictions and what is proper? I don't agree with bag searches either, which is why I don't frequent such establishments (save CostCo). But if I do need something from the stores, I follow their policies.

BTW, there is nothing illegal about requesting to examine your purchase.

Costco is different for obvious reasons.

Actually, if you read what I posted I never said I shopped at any of the stores mentioned.

Because of course, I was only talking about you. I couldn't have possibly been using "you" to refer to anyone that disagrees with the policies but still frequents the establishments.

You can thank your friendly neighborhood shoplifters. If it weren't for them, B&Ms wouldn't find it more cost effective to hire door checkers. Parents also wouldn't have to put up with toys that require a gazillion plastic ties to keep them attached to the box they come in.

No you can thank your friendly shoppers who are to afraid to stand up to the door greater and tell them to fuck off.

JHC whats with all the drama? They are just checking your bag and your receipt, calm the fuck down. If you're gonna be that much of an asshole do the whole world a favor and stick to walmart.com.

Seriously people, get a life. OOOhhhhh, you told a walmart greater to fuck off, aren't you all big and bad. If you don't like a store's policies, don't shop there. If you really want to be a hard ass, there's other things you can do that are tougher than hastling some 80 year old woman checking receipts.

When I spend 20 minutes waiting in line at Wal-Mart to buy some bread and cold cuts because they've only got two fucking registers open, I'll be damned if I'm going to waste another second at the door so they can make sure I paid for $5 worth of food. Unless I'm shopping at Sam's Club or BJ's, I tell the receipt checkers to fuck themselves unless there's NO LINE.

Sheesh!!! There's no need to be rude, I just keep walking. I do wait at Costco though, because I don't want to lose my membership.

And disconnect the association by not using the singular possesive, "You".

English Grammar takes it on the chin again, FTL.

What a douche bag.
Yeah , that cop really was.
This only proves my theorum that cops protect Big Business citizens at the expense of the Individual Citizens.
Had the officer actually KNOWN the real statutes in question, rather than perpetuating the myths passed on down the line, noneof this ever would have happened.

In the mean time, The Police have re-inforced their intimidating presence in the public's mind by shoving against a wall, handcuffing and throwing in a police car an innocent citizen whose civil rights were being violated under color of authority, yet every passer-by only sees what they (incorrectly) think is a shoplifter.

Yeah, a douche is what is needed.

Do they ever really check if you have more than three things?

Usually they just glance at it and let me pass. This is when I have a cart full of stuff.

Store policies don't over ride law.

I hate that showing your reciept crap. The other day I had a tire go out on me so I took into sams club to see if they could remount/repair it. Well it was beyond help so they had to order a replacement tire for warranty coverage. So I load my damaged tire/rim into a cart and head for the door. I try to head right out when the guy at the door says. "You need to get in line and show your reciept." I show him the tire, its all flat and covered in road salt. "You think I just bought this?" i ask him. "I dont care" he responds. "You need to show a reciept to leave the store." "So I need a reciept for a flat tire that I brought into this store?" I just pushed the cart right past him.

On the other side tho. The checker has found when we were charged for something that wasnt in our cart. The cashier doubled scanned something one time, so we just went in and grabbed another rather that waiting in line for a refund.

In practice it appears that they do. This is exactly the point the OP makes.

Here's a related question I've always wondered about. Let's say I have two items and the checkout line is very long. Can I walk past the people in line, put exact change (or more) down by the register and head out the door? As long as I have paid for my items including tax, must I wait in the line?
