I think this is what you got:

Rat Snake

The description matches, even though the one pictured is much lighter in color. Note also, excellent climber. Everything considered, one of the better snakes to have around. Rat snakes are generally fairly docile ... I had a red rat (aka corn snake) as a pet for awhile in college. You could have caught it and let your kid take it to school for show & tell.

And yea, I've been bit by rat snakes ... no big deal. A cat scratch is worse.

I capture the damn things and move them outside. Who am I to impose myself upon other animals, including neanderthal men who like to kill everything in sight? If it's not harmful to me then I see no need to extinguish it. Spiders are also rather fascinating, and if you leave them be you'll witness a marvelous evolution of webs. I go out of my way to avoid the webs of the spiders in my garage.

The idea that a real man kills spiders is absurd, because it would seem to me that a real man need not be intimidated by such animals.

If that had been a cotton mouth it would not have run back up the tree. It would have pwned you and your 6' stick. :p

Never ran back up the tree... was coming down when I got him...

I take it that cottonmounths are very aggressive?

Your one close up picture (bottom) looks like this one. But, it's really hard to tell.

King

I'm about 100% (heh) sure it's not this :

Cottonmouth

I don't think it's a king ... IIRC, they only get to 3' or 4'

Hmmm.. dont think that is it either.

This is the head of that snake... the one that I killed was much more triangle shaped.

You are a ball-less, brainless nitwit who is apparently so insecure of his role as husband, father, and provider that you needed to "prove" your value and importance by killing some lame ass, nonvenemous snake species. You, young lady, are pathetic!
Quick, there's a squirrel in your tree! Call the women folk and show 'em what you can do!
Troglodyte!

I've been bitten by one of those - it's nothing. Like being scratched by a cat. Only way they'll bite you is if you corner one or try to pick it up (I tried to pick one up).

Like Viper said, it IS just a snake, but why kill something if you don't have to? If you had left it alone you probably never would have seen it again.

I have seen it multiple times around that tree.. first time that I could get up close to see if I thought it was poisonous.

Still, painfull or not, I dont want my family to have to get bit.
That's your preogative - and I will admit, when I got bit I was a kid and it was in my yard, so there you are.

The triangle-head test is bs. Rat snakes and king snakes usually have longer heads than pit vipers, but they're both more or less triangular.

You killed a black racer. Pit vipers in general, and especially cottonmouths, are much thicker than that.

regardless of what kind of snake it was if you left it alone it would have left you alone and it is understandable that you are worried about your kids i would be horrible if you werent concerned for their sake but you could have gotten rid of it with out killing it you musn't have to much respect of reverence for nature there are humane societies and parks that will relocate them somewhere they can live better than your backyard and you dont have to deal with it either but freaking out is understandable

You must not have have too much respect or reverence for nature, there are humane societies and parks that will relocate them somewhere where they can live better than your backyard and you didn't have to deal with it either, but freaking out is understandable

If the spiders are big, I just put them in a jar and put them back outside. They aren't harming me, why should I harm them?

I've raised most all the snakes mentioned here. Cottonmouths do not climb trees unless flooded. Neither do Copperheads. There are no tree dwelling snakes that are poisonous in the US that I'm aware of. Sure they can climb them but they just don't, it's not in their nature. The snake you killed was looking for birds eggs to eat or other small mammals to eat. They do not give tetanous, rusty nails do. I wouldn't of killed it but of course I'm very familiar with them. Some people just have a phoebia about them.

Who cares about the loss of one snake? It's one freaking snake. The world has billions of more snakes to take it's place. I dunno about you guys but I'm not Tarzan or the Beastmaster. If that snake found it's way into my house or yard, I'm not taking chances, I'm BBQing the remains!

Wow, lots of soapbox people here. "Who are you to impose on another creatures existence?" WTF? If your dog runs away, do you go get it or let it go? Who are you to recapture a dog and impose on its existence. This thread is more like a PITA convention. My god people...he doesn't like snakes, and he wasn't willing to risk his daughters safety. I suppose thats too much to grasp for some of the most ignorant people on the net. This forums quality is going way downhill.

The quality of your logic is the only thing going downhill. Most pet owners contribute to the value of an animal's life, so letting it wander aimlessly on the streets is a negative consequence; it's hardly an imposition.
