Christ. WTF is wrong with you people?

TEH NOES KILL THE SNAKE THINK OF THE CHILDREN AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

I might be able to understand if it was a rattlesnake. People that disregard life because it isn't cute and fuzzy piss me off to no end.

"ewwww.. kill the snake!" ... "aww.. look at the pigeon".

Since when do people say ..."aww..look at the pigeon"?
Well.. :p

It's the thought that counts.

And, I do! :) I think pigeons are neat, even if they are a nuisance in the city. Used to have one as a pet.

The Southeast has to deal with Cottonmouths which pose a real problem since they attack at anytime whereas other poisonous snakes of the Southeast only attack when cornered.

Cottonmouths are know to hang out in tree branches hanging over the water and purposely fall into boats as they pass under the branches.

If that had been a cotton mouth it would not have run back up the tree. It would have pwned you and your 6' stick. :p

It is possible that it is one. Can you get closer up pics?

Furthermore, be careful and do not touch the fangs. You could try opening the mouth with a stick or something.

yeah, but are they really that threatening? 1) there is treatment 2) any amount of commonsense will keep you safe (i.e., scan the tree branches before you canoe under it, or better yet, don't canoe into low overhanging tree branches, lol :D )

edit:

Closer to home, many people think the Cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus) and the Copperhead (Agkistrodon sp.) are very deadly. They are not, quite the opposite in fact. The maximum amount of venom a Cottonmouth can deliver is just barely enough to kill a single person. The Copperhead is even less deadly, even untreated, a Copperhead bite causes death in considerably less than 1% of the bites. Keep in mind that these two snakes rarely deliver anything close to their maximum dosage.

You realize that if it was a king snake you did yourself a favor, because you killed a big predator of a.) vermin b.) OTHER snakes, etc. I believe in some municipalities it's also illegal to do that because they are beneficial...I know it is in some parts of PA.

What's next, are you going to kill all the bats in your attic or the deer in your backyard? The majority of snakes are more afraid of people than they are of anything else. As long are you don't corner it or act overly aggressive, you're perfectly safe. What would your child be doing out in the backyard unsupervised, anyway?

I guess I can understand you wanting to protect the little one, but killing the thing? Come on man. :( Next time remove the snake (or call animal control, they'll move it for free) into an open field or something. Killing should only be a last resort.

I've been bitten by one of those - it's nothing. Like being scratched by a cat. Only way they'll bite you is if you corner one or try to pick it up (I tried to pick one up).

Like Viper said, it IS just a snake, but why kill something if you don't have to? If you had left it alone you probably never would have seen it again.

I would've either moved it off the property or killed it. What do you do with spiders? Nurse it? Spiders get rid of bugs too, but when they're in your house.. I doubt you just leave it there.

I have seen it multiple times around that tree.. first time that I could get up close to see if I thought it was poisonous.

Still, painfull or not, I dont want my family to have to get bit.

Very good point on the spiders.

Moving it was not even considered. As you can tell, I dont know much about snakes... and to move a snake that is 6' long... to hell with that. Sure I could pay someone, but sorry.. not going to do that either.

I am positve that snakes are plentiful around my house.... but heres the thing I dont see them in my yard 15 feet from my childs swingset. I am going to kill any snake that I feel is "to close" . Its not like I am going out looking for these things!
