I was about to hop in the shower this past sunday when my wife came in there to get me to come outside. She was getting back from her walk was looking up this tree in our front yard. This tree has a hole in it about 25 feet up where these snakes just love to hang out, so she thought that she would check it out. Well, she didn't see it hanging out the hole so she just went on looking at her plants and stuff that she planted at the base of that tree, she then said that she seen the snake climbing up and down the tree as if it were on the ground, with ease! I knew that snakes could climb, but damn you should have seen how easy it was crawling up and down that tree, it was amazing.

Anyhow, I am not a fan of snakes in the least bit, and having a 3 year old little girl, I am not going to have a snake crawling around *ANYWHERE* near my property. So I grabbed a dowl stick about 6' long and gave the snake a smack it would not forget, it fell to the ground and I threw it out in the open a little more where I really let him know how I felt of him being there.

I know most of you wont care, but I thought I share some pictures of this thing. I know I'm going to catch some flack from some of you saying "why the hell did you kill that kind of a snake, its harmless" & "it wasnt doing anything to you", but like I said, snakes are not going to be around my place where my little girl plays outside all the time.

The thing turned out to be SIX feet long, was HUGE! (IMHO anyway). I got some stills of it with my digi cam, if I was thinking I would have grabbed my DV and shot some video of it crawling on the tree.

Anyhow.. here are the pics. The reason that I am showing so many pics, I would like for someone to tell me what kind it is. The head on him was triangle, and I heard that meant they are poisonous... please inform me!

When you die and go to Hell, a humongous snake will be biting your ass for eternity.

I would have done the same, but I would have used a special revolver to do it.

It was harmless.

Now it's even more harmless.

Those or rodent killers extraordinar!

Now the mice and rats will move in. Personally, I'd rather have the snake!

Its a black racer. They can't really cause a person a lot of harm, but they can be quite aggressive. A bite from one can cause tetanus. And they are very good at killing pests like mice and rats.

EDIT: Like someone else said, it might be a king snake. Black racers often have faint markings, but from the photos it looks like the markings on your snake really stand out. Other than that, everything in my original post still stands as true.

Why?

Because it's teh scary looking?

There are a dozen more where that one came from. Better stake out your front yard for the next few weeks, making sure all the evil serpents are dead.

I vote this guy the pansy of the day. :p

The only time I promote killing snakes is if they're poisonous and in a place they shouldn't be, or a random snake that somehow gets in your house. (Long story that happened to me two weeks ago. :p Killed the thing before I realized what kind it was, but there are copperheads in East TN and I wasn't going to take the time to determine what it was.)

Finding one in your garden or out on your deck or in the house and killing it is one thing...

Pulling it off a tree and then beating it to death is quite another...

That's alot of rules to follow on whether killing a snake makes you a pansy or not. Guess you had to word it so he would be one while you are not.

WAY over-reacting, it wasn't hurting anything & has far more potential benefit than harm.

Whatever though, it's just a snake but it was rather uncalled for.

No, it doesen't.

Snakes? mouths do not harbor Clostridium tetani. However, appropriate tetanus prophylaxis is indicated, since tetanus spores may be carried into the fang puncture wounds by dirt present on skin at time of bite or by nonsterile first-aid procedures.

So basically, unless you're a dirty, rusty fecal dirt covered individual, and you get bitten by a snake, you aren't going to get tetanus.

Besides, who isn't vaccinated for tetanus?

screw you all!! any snake I find in my yard, its killing time. I hate snakes and will not have any around at all. as for keeping them around for rodent control. F*ck that, that is why god made rat poison.

Looks like a common black snake ... I'm sure there is a more technical name for it. They are completely harmless.

If you're worried about snakes in your yard, you should have let this one be ... he was keeping down the rodent population for you. If the rodent population goes up, you may get new snakes moving into the territory that you'll like a whole lot less (copperheads, rattlers, etc.). Not to mention fun stuff like hantavirus. I'd rather have a black snake around then mice any day.
