Cheap Prescription Glasses Thread (as low as $19)

My last three pairs of glasses (two last year, one this year) have been from Zenni Optical. One of the pairs from last summer broke this summer, prompting my purchase of a newer pair there, but as I only paid $35 for it in the first place, I'd say I definitely got my money's worth. I've had $150+ glasses frames break in the past too, so if it's gonna happen anyway, it might as well be some cheap ones that I can easily replace. 😛

The quality of the lenses themselves seem fine, I have no complaints. Currently I'm wearing these in black. Total was less than $35 including anti-reflective coating and shipping.

My vision is pretty poor and I've been wearing glasses since I was 9-10 (I'm 22 now), and generally I've always needed a new prescription (and thus a new pair of glasses) every 18 months or so. That seems to be stabilizing a bit as I'm getting older, but in any case - I can't really see myself paying full price ($200+) for glasses at a local shop anymore when I can get 3 different pairs from this place online for under $100...

I don't recommend goggles4u. 🙁

My glasses are excellent at the center, looking directly straight out, but is fish-eyed away from the center. Instant headache lookout anywhere off-center while moving my head.

i've been wearing my pair from zenni optical for three months now, and they are great!

i mean, they are not fancy, but very well built for $19....this is an unbelievable deal!

I use some Zenni frameless glasses myself. The first pair broke after about a year at a solder joint, bought a new one for $35 shipped, one of the memory titanium ones, and they're great.

Can you get glass lenses with these? I don't mind the extra weight, but do mind the way plastic lenses scratch so easily. Last time I bought glasses (B&M in CA), they said glass is no longer available. TIA.

Edit: I assume we are talking about online ordering here. So, I am wondering how they deal with the issue of sizing the frame and what I would do about adjustments so it's level on my face and feels good and doesn't slip-slide, etc.

I may be wrong on this but I swear I heard glass scratches easier then the pollycarbonite lenses. I will try to google later to be sure when I get a chance but when I just wen in for my prescription glass is bad I know because they shatter if you get into an accident, and I swear she told me they scratch easier too.

My glasses from Zenni should be here tomorrow and thought I would say it is very sad that a week before I went for my eye exame my son went to a "professional" place to have his done because my insurance covers his glasses but not mine. It has been over 3 weeks now and his are not done and mine will be here in less then a week and I paid $38 shipped for mine (got the glare coating and clip on shades, the works). His if I had to pay for it would of been close to $300 and I had to pay a $50 co-pay to boot. Now that I have gotten these and if they work out as everyone says we will be buying all of our future glasses from Zenni. Cant wait to get them with all the good reports on them.

As for getting the sizing right. I used a tape measure and googled inches to MM, and used my glasses now as a referance point for size. They give you the width of the frames, bridge, and height and width of the lenses as well. Just measure yours for a starting point and get all the sizes of what you have now in inches and change it to MM. Then go on the site and look for ones that are close to what you have. If the ones you have now are to wide you go down in MM, and if to small and spread when you put them on go bigger. I eneded up going with a frameless set where the bridge and the size of the lens made up the full width of the glasses. They came out, according to my measurements, just slightly bigger width wise and lense was a little shorter. If someone wants help with it I will be more to help out. PM me and I will give you my phone number.

As for adjustments thats where years of wearing glasses and hopfully doing it yourself would come into play. Just need really hot water and a mirror or a family member to help out. Get the ear pieces hot under the water and they will bend easier and adjust them till they feel and look right to you. Or you can always go to walmart, they will do it for free I think no matter where you got them from, provided the walmart you go to has an optical store inside, cant just walk up to the register you know 😛.

I was right and wrong about the lenses.
Glass is less harder to scratch but will shatter like i said if dropped, or if you ride a bike or motorcycle and a rock gets thrown up with shatter them too and could lose your eyesight.

Also that link I just gave sells glases on line, has a good answer question section, and they have glasses and frames for under $100, not the best, but I took a quick look and they have a huge selection of glasses, sunglasses, swimming glasses, and others.

Well my glasses showed up today after all, the mail was late. All I can say is I am super happy with my purchase.

I got these. They look much better then how they have them pictured. Went with the grey and they almost are not visible on my face. I went with the total package including the clip on sun shades. The clip on shade kinda suck, Im going to get another set and have them tinted. Was $32.80 out the door for every option they had, minus the tinting.

They are super light, I have never had a set that was this light in my life. I am not used to pushing up my glasses every 15 seconds or so and that is going to take a little to get used to. I can whip my head around like mad and they dont even slide down at all.

As far as fit, they fit perfect right out of the case, oh yeah came with a sweet smoked case, I didnt have to do anything to them. They are level fit great behind the ear, I am just so excited. Excited enough that my I am getting my wife a new pair, and my son, even though I just got him a set, I can get him another pair for less then my co-pay!

Im sold, as if you couldnt tell, and will be buying a few more sets. No reason anymore I cannot have new glasses every 6 months or so.

Anyway needless to say my way of measuring then out to fit my face worked out, they are just slightly bigger then my older pair which is what I was going for as well.

As far as I know my doctor did nothing wrong. Since my lasik troubles developed, I've met many people in the same boat as I'm in, and many of them were patients of the most famous lasik surgeons in the country (yes, even including the one that did Tiger Woods' eyes). Doctors can indeed screw up the operation, but even if they don't, and everything is done correctly, you can still have severe problems. The warning on the FDA website is there for a reason (unfortunately it was not there when I had my surgery).

Now maybe I should have had my tears tested beforehand. I may certainly have had a borderline dry eye condition prior to surgery. But to this day I know of no lasik surgeon who pretests for dry eye. That in my opinion is a very big mistake, and borders on irresponsible negligence on the doctors' part. But lasik doctors are reluctant to do anything which will cast the procedure in a negative light, and testing for dry eye would be indirectly admitting there's a problem there.

Besides the FDA website, my suggestion to anyone considering lasik is to visit http://www.surgicaleyes.org/. There's a wealth of info there, and many real life stories from people who have been through the procedure and had problems.

I had Lasik more recently (2004) after following the proceedure for years, waiting for it to improve. The success rate is rising over time, as I think any of you will discover if you research the matter, and the lasers being used today are vastly superior to those being used a decade ago.

That being said, having had it done is proving to be a mixed bag. I qualify as a "success" as most lasik patients do, in that my worse than 20/400 vision improved to where I am borderline 20/20 -- no worse than 20/25 -- without glasses. Still, I am picky about my vision, so I usually wear glasses even when they aren't essential in order to get something closer to 20/15 vision. The lasik left about 1 diopter of astygmatism in my right eye -- while much improved over what it was, I can still see the difference with glasses. I am also at an age where I need glasses to read - did before lasik and still do, which is no surprise since lasik is not designed to remedy this issue.

The dry eye issue is real. I ended up using eyedrops for 6 - 8 months after the surgery. While it is much better now, I do think my eyes tire more than they used to. By bedtime I often feel my vision deteriorating. Whether this is the lasik or "old age" (I am 57), I really can't be sure. And, as I said, I really did not ditch glasses at all.

There are advantages, though. It used to be that without glasses I was practically blind. Now, I can see well enough for most things, including driving. Years ago, I lost my glasses 300 miles from home and had I not had a girlfriend with me to drive I'd have been in quite a fix. Swimming used to be very unpleasant for me because I hated being blind in a pool/ocean. But my lasik vision is perfectly adequate for swimming, water parks, etc. That problem has simply disappeared. Also, my old glasses were like coke bottles. My new ones have thin and light lenses. In the past I could not have glasses with large lens areas because they'd have gotten absurdly thick at the edges, but I can consider almost any style of glasses now without that concern.

So while I agree it is not a cure-all, I think some of you are too negative on the topic. Lasik used to be more of a risk -- they HAVE improved the lasers. If you are considering it, be sure to get a first rate surgeon and BE SURE he is one who screens patients before surgury for pupil size, pre-existing dry eye problems, etc. Don't know about the previous poster, but I was screened for dry eye before the proceedure -- not that it entirely avoided the problem, however.

Let me put my 2c in, if you will. I had Lasik done in 2000, when I was 40. For a few months afterwards, night driving was a real pain. I also had dry eyes for a while. After about 6 months, bith went away, and I had near perfect vision and was in heaven. My eyesight before that was so bad, I could not read anything more than a foot away. About 6 months ago, as I am heading into my later forties, I noticed my vision getting a little blurry. I will need glasses to correct this. Would I recommend Lasik or any other similar process to correct eyesight? YES!!! Did my eye fall apart after my young son smack me in it with one of his toys? NO! YMMV, so do your homework and go to the best place you can find. PS...the smell of burning eyeball from the laser is much like burning hair.

Just a warning. The cheap lens of my rimless glasses from optical4less broke like within a week of getting them, and after replacing them with unbreakable lens from my own optician, they lasted about 6 more months before the frame broke. I would stay away from such cheap online stores from now on.

About 2 years ago I splurged and bought 3 pair at one shot from the $18 Hong Kong place, two pair for distance and one for computer use. Grand total of about $80 or so with kryptonite (titanium) frames anti-glare coating and shipping.

All worked out fine. prior pair was graded trifocals at $500.

I have kept up with this thread for years but only recently decided that my old pair of glasses (about 5 years old) was getting too scratched up, so I ordered 5 pairs (3 for me, 2 for my girlfriend) from Zenni Optical. They came in today and I am quite happy with them. I guess I should have paid a bit more attention to the sizing issues and measured my old glasses. One of the pairs that I bought is really small and just looks kinda funny on my face. Oh well, it was one of the pair that I bought for "around the house" anyway.

We are pretty happy with the quality etc. The only problem with buying glasses on-line like this is the "you can't try them on to see how they look" problem. But for 5 pairs for $107 (all with anti-glare coating) that's not much of a disincentive.

Thanks to the OP and other contributors!

My pair from optical4less are holding up ok after several months of use although one of the lenses pops out easy.

Not to long after ordering them I started to get some fraudulent charges from China on my credit card! I can't say for sure that its optical4less's fault since I also used that card at amazon and half.com but I suspect it. Needless to say the next time I order something from china I'll be sure to use one of those one-time use cards for security and I would encourage everyone else to.

It isn't a matter of "can't afford lasik," it is a matter of nobody knowing the long-term effects of Lasik. Also it is a matter of not wanting to gamble with something as precious as your eyesite. Then there is the fact that older people in their 40s are getting to the stage where they need reading glasses. Lasik won't help this and it could in fact make it mandatory to use reading glasses after lasik.

Beleive it or not, there are people who cant afford it.

My dad recently purchased and got his order from zennioptical.com and has nothing but praise.

They were shipped from an "A. Poon" in Hong Kong, marked as a gift, with a value of US $5.

LOL at aswedc

At the ripe old age of 45 my arms just aren't long enough anymore for reading. Started using a pair of reading glasses I got at Longs Drugs. The few different frames they carry are heavy and very uncomfortable.

I was happy to find this thread as it has been helping me prepare for my first pair of glasses.

Thanks OP!

My experiences:

Ordered a pair from Zenni Optical (~$85). It took roughly three weeks to receive them, from CA. Fit and finish were excellent, better than some of the crappy local places around here. However, there were some flaws with the construction - I ordered a pair with a clip-on shade and one of the magnets fell out. Also, there was a problem with a 'fishbowl' distortion effect around the periphery of the lenses (however, this might have been due to the size of the lens). I called Zenni, inquired about returning the pair for the 50% refund stated on their return policy, and they were generous enough to credit me back 75%. I returned the glasses and was credited back the next day after it was delivered.

Also ordered a pair from Optical4Less (~$70 with coupon). Took about two and a half weeks from order to delivery, and these shipped from Hong Kong. Sometimes they take a little while to respond to e-mails and there is no phone contact; however the person answering the e-mails seems to be polite enough. I was less impressed with the O4L glasses than the Zenni ones. For one, the finish was marred by a scratch across one of the lenses and the glasses did not seem as sturdy. It shipped in a cheap case vs. the Zenni case, which was quite nice. However, there was no problem with distortion on these lenses. Also what they don't tell you is that you get charged for a currency conversion fee (a couple bucks) of US to HK dollars on top of your order total on your credit card. There appears to be no return policy on O4L pairs.

On both pairs I got the 1.67 high-index with AR coating. The AR coating seems decent on both, evenly applied, except for the scratch on the O4L. In the end I went to a local optical retailer, picked out a frame I was happy with and paid about $220 for a pair with Trivex lenses. I think I'll stick with B&M from now on, even if I have to pay more, but Zenni seems to be the better place to order from the two.

Ordered my glasses from Zenni Optical based on input here and all I can say is WOW!!!! Picked a pair of titanium memory frames with progressive grey photochromatic no line lens, added scratch resistant coating. Took two weeks delivered to me in Massachusetts. These glasses are perfect and compare to 350 dollar examples I looked at locally. I paid 93 bucks delivered with a hard case and cleaning cloth!!!!HIGHLY RECOMMENEDED

Well Im going on 5 months now with ine and still perfect. Not a scratch on them, but it helps that I only clean them with soap and water only, never a cloth and spray. Still fit nice on my face, have not stretched out, still sitting high and still not having to keep pushing them back up my face.

Got them from Zenni, and will continue to do so. Havent had the money yet to get the wife and oldest theirs yet, but as soon as I can afford to get my wife a new doctors check up, she will be getting some from them. These are the best $35 pair of glasses I have ever owned, or any glasses for that matter-PERIOD

I got my second batch of glases from Zenni about two months ago. First batch was more than two years ago. I buy separate distance and computer viewing glasses. They are so cheap that losing a pair is no big deal.

Glasses are light and fit well. The titanium frames are the best in my opinion.

On your next visit to the eye doctor, have him measure the ID (inter-puillary distance). You need this when you order.

I am a well satisfied customer.

Good find. I ordered from 39dollarglasses and got mine in about a week. I had some questions about the Rx and called them. They answered the phone quickly and were very professional.

I wanted to chime in. I used Zenni Optical.
I bought a pair of glasses and a pair of sunglasses for myself. I wear the regular glasses every day, and the sunglasses when it's sunny. 🙂 They work great for me, I have no problems. I got my wife a pair of glasses too for when she's not wearing her contacts. She also thinks they're great.
Thanks to the OP for getting this thread going, and to everyone for sharing their opinions and experiences.

I have been remembering this thread for quite some time, waiting until I needed new glasses.

I just bought a pair of single vision computer glasses from my eye doc for $225 (insurance even paid for part of it at this price). They are ok, but I had to go back to have them adjusted a second time.

I had my office mate measure my pupils and odered a second pair for use at home from http://www.39dollarglasses.com/ , took exactly one week to get them. They are the Lenardo frames and antireflective coating. Total cost to the door was about $69.50 vs $70 for just the coating at the eyedoc. They sent me an email confirmation when I placed the order, and an email when they were shipped, but I received them the same day I got the shipped email via DHL (next day delivery even though it said ground from NY to FL). I am very happy with the quality of the glasses, they have spring loaded bows, exactly like the ones from the eye doc. They are as good as the pair from the eyedoc except they need adjustment for the nose and bows over the ears. I would buy again from them.

I might try Zenni for the wife for a comparison.
