Asian names are actually really easy to pronounce if you learn the pronunciation key for pinyin (Chinese in our alphabet).

I agree.. my great grandfather changed the spelling of our last name to make it easier. Although he really could have done a better job. I have an e at the end that sounds like a y and really should just be a y.

Korean names are pretty easy to pronounce - they're all one syllable.
I think it's the same with Chinese.
Don't think Vietnamese is - Japanese is definitely not.

Some lazy ass decided to use it. As far as I can tell, it's the same pronunciation as Nguyen or Ing. Where the hell are the vowels!

Think I may have to agree though. Most translated names sound nothing like how they sound in their native language, but if we start with Asians, we may as well make every non English-native person change their names. No more "did I say that right?".

LOL no kidding, I knew a Polish guy named Grzegorz. I guess "z" is a vowel in Polish?

But seriously? WTF, it's not that hard to learn foreign names. Just takes a little longer. But many Chinese names are shorter than American/Western European names. I don't see a problem as long as they consistently use the same name on all legal documentation. What is this, Ellis Island?

If you want the most flammboyant names, look no further than Hong Kong. They are officially part of China, but the culture is so different.

I don't think they're complaining about last names. Just first. Most Asians' legal names use the phonetic representation, but they have an unofficial english name that most people call them by. What this lady suggested makes perfect sense. Just freaking change your name to what most people call you by if you want to avoid problem!

that is, assuming they followed pinyin rules when they translated their names. I know a few wongs that really should be wangs, changs that should be zhangs and a shiao that should be xiao under pinyin =P

i'm not changing my name so some lazy fucks can spare a few seconds trying to figure out how to pronounce it. Besides I have an awesome name so there is no way i'd change it for some easy-to-pronounce anglicized name which has no meaning to me.
