Cue the:
no one wants to work for garbage wages, stressful and shitty conditions, and non-existent benefits

Maybe they should try better wages, benefits, and working conditions? But nooooo that would make too much sense.
What happened to market forces and supply and demand?

Red states have already cut off the unemployment money from the feds.
What's next? Threaten workers with jail time?

Post-Pandemic: “The free market isn’t working for us, we need a government solution to trim the safety net and force people to work!”

Minimum Wage: “FUCK OFF WITH YOUR SOCIALIST AGENDA! GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT BE IN THE BUSINESS OF REGULATING WAGES!! FREE MARKETS!!”

Article from today as well, and the CEO of Best Buy lists the REAL reasons they are having trouble. And surprise, Unemployment isn't one of them:

There are four major reasons for this, she added.
The first is the ongoing struggle of parents dealing with children at home. "There is a real lack of childcare that still exists," Barry said.

Secondly, "there are still health concerns," Barry said. "And people who maybe don't want a career in retail due to health concerns."
Third, retail is among the jobs that have changed most heavily over the last year. At many companies staff members were turned into essential front-line workers overnight, as unlike those in other industries they couldn't work from home. Not every retail worker may want to continue to sign up for that as the pandemic continues.

Finally, companies like Best Buy are facing more competition for staff. Major companies including Under Armour (UA), Amazon (AMZN) and Walmart (WMT), have raised their minimum wage to attract workers.

And picking a job during these times is no longer just about money.
Now, said Barry, "it's about a wholesome set of benefits that we can put in place, and flexibility that we can put in place, so that we're able to retain a diverse workforce."

I wouldn't be surprised if its already too late to speculate, but has the GOP started arguing that people that don't have a job be jailed yet?

I almost wish I could work at least part time. But I can't. My mind just won't let me. Hard to explain in ways others can understand.

Exactly. Parents don’t have options, boomers are retiring in droves, and immigration is at an all time low. If companies need workers then they’ll have to play the game of capitalism and start increasing their pay until people start applying.

What would the people doing the actual hiring know about it. None of those four made up reasons would be anything a Republican would use to divide people. They would do nothing but reduce the fear that is needed to create the kind of animus needed to end democracy and keep them in office.

Republicans may be disgusting but they aren't crazy except for crazy pretend. And business itself is going to have a hard time seeing that the hand that has made then the so so privileged 1% is not killing them via excessive pawn sacrifice. It's why the need to change the rules of the game before corporate leaders wake too far up and end them.

Isn't there a time limit on unemployment benefits? It seems like sooner or later you have to go back to work.

There definitely is...or was pre-covid...not sure what, if anything, changed with that...however, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see folks previously employed in food service or retail find other types of employment. As was mentioned in the pics thread...

you and I are fortunate in that we live in states where tipped employees are treated like real people...the employer pays them the full minimum wage...PLUS they get their tips, however, in much of the country, the employer pays them $2.13/hr, then the employee makes up the difference between the $2.13 and whatever the minimum wage there is with tips.

It's not just unemployment benefits, it's childcare and folks transitioning to other jobs where they could.

Hasn't been cut off yet. Set in most of those red states to cut off at the end of June. just more misinformation from you.

Regardless, in many example states job search websites reported huge spikes in searching the day it was announced. Cue the "no shit Sherlock" for disproving the stupidity of dur Hur just pay us more for work that isn't worth the market rate.

That's a shitty deal for most of them. But if the food service industry can't hire enough people to operate then more money will be on the table, and probably fewer restaurants with less people dining out.

All of the bars and restaurants here are crying for help. They can't find people who want to work for minimum wage plus tips. Remember, this is a small town of 6500 full time residents...but on the weekend, it might also have an additional 10,000 tourists and weekenders...so the labor pool is already pretty small.

Yes, we should totally feel sorry for business owners who would rather lose business than pay a competitive wage.
And no, people will not be dining out less as COVID ends. They will be dining out more.

I LOVE AMERICA, especially when WE THE PEOPLE wake up and realize they have been screwed by the corporations and by the employers. And... I love watching the workers finally taking a stand. Most of this employment issue is definitely wage, but the other part is when workers realized during the pandemic that employers just simply DID NOT GIVE A DAMN about employee safety or about employee health and well being. I love it when the workers across America NOW realize this too, that employers never did give a damn about the employee. It was all about profits and always was ONLY about profits. AND.... it took a pandemic to make that quite crystal clear to every wage earner across America. GOD BLESS THE WAGE EARNER.

Oh sure... businesses, corporations, employers will seek out congress to see what law(s) might be passed to FORCE a worker back into the salt mine. FORCE a worker back to working for slave wages. Congress may further restrict and limit public assistance i.e. low cost housing, i.e. food assistance, i.e. energy assistance and medical assistance to punish those seeking a decent living wage. "A decent living wage", all four-letter words to the ear of a republican in congress.

You know what kicks my ass.... is that these QAnon Trumpies believe that Donald Trump will regain his throne and power and make everything PERFECT in America. But the truth is.... should Trump come back to power then America turns into a third world country with poverty and suffering galore under the rule of Donald Trump, AND under his republican party. COME ON TRUMPIES.... when have the republican party or people like Donald Trump ever put WE THE PEOPLE first??? NEVER, is the answer. If Trump came back with this republican congress, we know exactly what would happen. The rich would get a lot richer, and the poor a lot poorer. And the republican target would be the full destruction of the middle class. Don't believe me???? Just ask Mitch McConnell.

Yep, in MA == ~$2 / hour, I tip 25%. If I go to CT, it's minimum wage, so I tip %15. But I rarely eat out anymore (even pre covid). I always thought this $2/hour stuff was garbage. Everyone should get paid the same, and gratuities should be shared evenly amongst all hourly staff, even the dishwashers (but not salaried employees)

Dining out demand is fucking berserk around here. I question the honesty of any operator who tells me they can't modestly boost pricing to get the labor they need to run. The restaurant industry got used to a labor market with a lot of slack in it and that went away, at least temporarily as things shake out. There is a lot of outright anger about this which just exposes the entitled.

My sector isn't complaining like a bunch of toddlers though. We're adapting and doing what we have to do in order to secure the needed labor. It's going to be a crazy good year and a half most likely so instead of bitching we're gearing up to ride the wave.

Gratuities, grifts, bribes, etc. should all be gone. They among the many reasons I haven't set foot in a restaurant in close to 20 years and likely never will again.

Bribing somebody to fill your coffee cup or set a plate in front of you is just plain silly.
