<< The only drawback to Verizon is that they do a credit check on you and if you don't have a sufficient credit history, you have to give them a $500 deposit. >>

Are you serious? How much credit history is a college student going to have?

<< In the Los Angeles area, this is the order of best to worst (my opinion):

1. verizon
2. AT&T
100. Cingular.

i don't know about nextel because i don't have any expereience w/it.

but Cingular just plain sucks in LA. If you want to go w/a good service in LA, go w/choice #1.

u can get kickassphones for free too w/them. go to monterey park and u can get hooked up.

Croton, what makes Verizon better than AT&T in LA? By the ways, would any of you guys happen to know any special offers or deals going on?

I can't speak for AT&T, but Verizon is fairly bad in L.A. Sprint is great of course. However, I think all cell phones are going to "roam" or are going to be "looking for service" all the time. It depends on the material used in the building you're in. If you're outside, no problem though.

Agodspeed you type like a child and your opinion didn't make any sense.

Sprint uses 1900mhz band which doesn't penetrate through buildings well, while verizon uses 800mhz which can travel through infrastructure much better.

Anyways Cingular/Att are soon going to work together to use eachothers cell sites, not a merge though. ATT is switching to GSM gradually.

By the looks of the data, it seems most people are happy with their services. I have verizon and I love my plan. However, they just put up a new tower for Cingular across the street, so now Cingular has much better reception in my area.

I have cingular, and if you want some cheap rates for OK service go with cingular, but if you want quality, *hopefully people agree* AT&T is one of the best, if not, the best. 4 of my friends switched from cingular to AT&T

Had Verizon off and on for years (back to when they were Airtouch) Never had too major of an issue, they *did* slide some extra services into my bill that I didn't catch for a month or so, but when I called, they were cool about taking the charges off.

<< What is GSM? >>

GSM is the global standard for mobile telephones. It's the dominant technology in Europe (operating at 900 and 1800MHz) and Asia. There are operators in USA that use GSM (at 1900MHz), but it's not dominant there.

THe good thing of single standard, is the fact that I can take my cell-phone (Nokia 7110) ad go from Helsinki to London, to Madrid, to Rome, to Paris, and back to Helsinki again... And during that time my phone would work just as it did before.

I might have asked this before, but does the type of phone you get effect the quality of your calls?

I have a question about Nextel's direct connect feature, how far apart can two cell phones be to get a good reception?

VoiceStream Wireless with Nokia 6190 <--- Very Happy
600 weekday anytime free long distance free roaming minutes
UNLIMITED weekend free long distance free roaming minutes

$39.99 a month, you can't beat that.

LakerGod: that is subject to debate..but yes, the type of phone you get will affect reception, if only somewhat. If you have XXX, and XXX cant get a signal at all in the basement of some building, a different phone isn't gonna change that..although it could improve poor reception to good reception.

actually Rossman I think my deal beats yours:
Cingular:
39.99
400 anytime
Unlimited 9pm-7am
Unlmited weekends
Free long distance

oh yeah, free roaming anywhere you would want to go in Texas, with analog fallback..Voicestream doesnt quite have the network that Cingular (old SWBell) has here

Voicestream has excellent coverage here in Florida. I get 50-56kbps download speeds on my laptop. Not too bad.

Hey guys, what actually is "roaming"? And do phone companies charge you when you receive or make a call in roaming?
