I'm surprised so many people like Cingular.

Do the service providers give you a discount on the phone you can get if you sign up with their service?

I have two phones from Alltel (Motorola T2260's), and for where I live, Alltel is the best. Customer service is excellent. Prices are good: 300day/3500night and weekend for $29.95. Just my 2 cents =)

Yes, they heavily discount the phone prices if you sign a contract with them. I got a Nokia 3360 for $25 (they were running a half-off sale during December, its normally $50 w/ a 2-year agreement). I have Cingular, I'm happy with them, in Dallas, TX. A lot of my friends have Sprint, which they like also - none of us really go anywhere out of the way, and some guys have AT&T, which works fine here. I think it helps a lot that Dallas is flat :). For $40/month, I get 400 anytime, unlimited nights and weekends (9 pm-7am, and all weekend) and free long distance. SMS runs $.10/message, which is just a toy for me. I was on a $30 plan, with only 250 anytime and no long distance (.20/min), but I was using a lot of LD, and coming real close to the 250 minutes, and paying $2 more for VM. They are ending the unlimited nights & weekends promo. I just returned from Austin & College Station, and I had very good service there and along the drive (roaming in TX is included). They get my vote :)

I'm on vodaphone here in the uk.

The price is good and the reception is good in most places and is REALLY patchy in my house but apart from that its good for me.

Would anybody happen to know where to actually purchase the phone and the service in Los Angeles? Is it easier to purchas it online, or would it be better through a dealer? BTW, i've decided to go with AT&T.

I have Voicestream. It's allright.

EDIT: I'm surprised so many people use AT&T. Their rate plans are very expensive compared to Verizon/Voicestream/SPCS/etc.

It usually depends on your area when you are talking about the quality of your service.

Verizon my friend! Verizon has agreements with Spint and you can roam on a lot of sprint towers now!

I've had the following services in L.A. :

ATT
Sprint
Verizon

Verizon is awesome. 2 of my friends had verizon and switched to ATT/Cingular, today i was with my friend at long beach aquarium and i got reception inside he didn't (cingular). Then we were at my other friends house (glendale) down in the parking structure they both didn't get reception they had to use my phone. Sprint I used to get 0bars or no reception inside my house (reseda) now with verizon i get 2 to 3 bars. I never get dropped calls. If I don't have reception either do my friends (which is usually in places around lots of power lines). I DO like ATT nokia 3390, but o well. I have the audiovox 9100 phone BTW.

Damn, you're making my decision harder. Everybody told me AT&T gets the best reception in Los Angeles. Now i'm gonna have to reconsider Verizon...haha. Where did you get your service plan and did you get any cool deals?

ATT is OK (a lot of people like nokia which can make it #1). But Verizon is more efficient with your calls I have the current 300anytime regional west min. for $30/month with whatever enormous amount of offpeak min i get :).

Downfalls I have experienced:
Can't check your minutes used ANYWHERE this means online, customer service, or anything. Only once you get your bill you will see your total. (THIS SUCKS) Soon to be fixed other areas aren't like this only southern california.
F*cked up our first bill, go to a verizon store don't buy over the phone. This was fixed though.

What strikes me funny are Cingular users. So many of them get poor service and/or have constantly busy signals on nights and weekends and constantly complain. Yet they continue their service for multiple years and still bitch about it. Shut up already, you get what you pay for.

Not to mention all the ricer free Nokia Phones. Honda and Nokia. What a combo.

Verizon and Sprint both offer those cool Samsung phones that I like, but I'll probably go with AT&T anyways.
>>

I think you're talking about the LG phone, not Samsung. I have one of those right now, but I'm trying to get my hands on a Motorola v60.

Anyway, I have Verizon service and other than the $250 phone bill I got the first month (don't ask) I've been pretty pleased with the service. I travel on occasion from NY to CA and I can use my phone as much as I want in either state without having to pay any extra roaming charges. The coverage in NY and CA for Verizon is phenominal as well. Even when I'm indoors or out in the boonies, I still get good enough reception to make calls. I love it. The only drawback to Verizon is that they do a credit check on you and if you don't have a sufficient credit history, you have to give them a $500 deposit.

In the Los Angeles area, this is the order of best to worst (my opinion):

1. verizon
2. AT&T
100. Cingular.

i don't know about nextel because i don't have any expereience w/it.

but Cingular just plain sucks in LA. If you want to go w/a good service in LA, go w/choice #1.

u can get kickassphones for free too w/them. go to monterey park and u can get hooked up.
