My reading of the 60 Minutes report is that it sounded less like she was being raped and more like they were literally trying to tear her apart with their bare hands. Perhaps it started out with the intention to gang rape her and then when someone yelled that she was an Israeli and a Jew they decided to tear her up.

Many states require rape to involve penetration by the penis. It's one of the criticism on many rape laws - they are often highly gendered. However, many states also have a penetration by a foreign object statute to cover penetration that did not involve a penis.

These are all legal definitions though. That is certainly separate from social definitions.

My definition doesn't mean that penetration by an object isn't horrible or that we should feel less sympathy for someone who is a victim of that nor that the perpetrators shouldn't be punished.
