i think people find it "insincere" to hear the administration talk about responsibility, accountability, the Truth and a sort of unwritten moral/honor code and urge groups to act accordingly when they seem incapable of doing so or even a recognition of any wrong-doing when called upon by the public, press, or other politicians.

I do not see any problem in holding CBS accountable for its irresponsible, possibly partisan and overall poor quality journalism.

The contradiction of Bush applauding accountability while not doing so with his own administration is a completely different issue.

Accountability is a good thing regardless of who benefits or loses as a result of it.

CBS screwed up big time...those responsible, and the news media in general, have learned an important lesson in professionalism.

Fox News has a right wing Republican slant...no doubt about it...while you can question their interpretation of the facts, or premature assessment of situations, they are providing partisan commentary on news.

CBS presented false evidence, and continued to defend said evidence well after an apology was due...it is not the responsibility or the function of the media to create evidence to support their opinions...but they are welcome to offer there opinion on concrete news facts and evidence.

Similarly, if Fox News is guilty of fabricating evidence to support their worldview, they should be subject to the same scrutiny as CBS.

We do not have a process in place to enforce journalistic integrity, although attempting to do so has the potential to infringe on free speech, and it has become increasingly apparent that we cannot rely on journalists to adhere to any concept of professional conduct.

CBS is in hot water because they chose to blatantly and quite arrogantly defend and indefensible position, based on motives that are not entirely clear.

The way our media is currently structured, the only force that truly holds them accountable is the almighty dollar...the threat of sponsors and advertisers withdrawing their spots seems to be the only force of accoutability that our media understands.

Fox News doesn't exactly hide their true colors for all their talk about being fair and balanced...people do not have an expectation that they will receive anything less then a right wing slant on the news they watch...CBS portrays itself to a higher standard of objective journalism, and it should therefore come as no surprise when people hold them to that standard.

Fox not hiding its true colors does not make them exempt from displaying journalistic integrity. Hume's actions were made with malicious intent. If they weren't, he would've stated a retraction, but he hasn't.

Well that is precisely the point...what is the forum for accountability when journalists step over the line from honest mistakes to malicious intent...let's face it, CBS dug a pretty deep hole for themselves, and in a sense got burned at the stake because they chose to climb on it and declare themselves a witch.

The Hume story has not received that much attention or much of an outcry for that matter.
