Have had cats for a few years now as well as a dog.

Recently I have been trying to keep the cat off my desk because his fur gets everywhere including my cpu case. So I either gently take him off or clap my hands until he jumps off.

Perhaps coincidentally, he has started peeing in my things. It first started with my gym bag. He was looking at me the entire time he was doing it and even refused to stop peeing when I picked him up.

Then he went in the dogs bed which was next to my desk, again looking at me the entire time.

Finally, he went in my suitcase when it was open and full of clothes. I wasn't in the room at the time.

He never does this on my wife's belongings or in her presence.

Everything I could find online says that cats do not spray/pee out of spite but I am starting to think this is wrong. They mentioned it is usually due to an illness. I am going to take him to the vet just to be sure but this all seems too coincidental.

Any ATOTers have a cat that has exhibited similar behaviour?

Does my cat hate me? 🙂
 
Oh, yes. Cats very definitely absolutely for completely sure do things out of spite.

Like when you don't feed them as much as they think you should. They totally get right on your desk....look you straight in the eye....and push one of your speakers off with their paw - watching you the whole time.

It's like...DAMNIT!! CAT!! OFF!! But, yeah, that has, like, NO effect at all, so....

He is a rescue cat. He was about 1.5 when we adopted him and that was about the time he was neutered.

He is a rescue cat. He was about 1.5 when we adopted him and that was about the time he was neutered.

My dad has 9 cats. Every time I stay at his place I feel like they are plotting something. I've awoken on the couch with four of them staring at me... *shudder*

There is your problem. He is a male and if he was not neutered until 1 1/2 years, then he is going to spray to mark territory like an non-neutered male would do.

I would agree except he isn't spraying, he is doing his business to the full extent and he hasn't done this in the last year we have had him. It started after I would kick him off my desk.

I have seen cats spray and it is more of a quick burst of urine. This is a "grab the paper and make a morning of it" type of action.

Fine...watch for spraying. But still..this is abnormal behaviour. Unless his litterbox is really dirty and not being cleaned. Take him to the vet and have him checked out - it could be a serious probem.

I would say that he thinks you're ignoring or slighting him and he is determined to get your attention, positive or negative. You should still take it to the vet, of course, because this could also be the cat's way of getting your attention that it is sick (if that is the case).

While both involve urine, spraying is much different behavior than peeing. When a male cat sprays, it does so standing up, with its tail and back lifted high and tensed, and the urine shoots straight out behind it. Peeing is done from a more relaxed hunched position. If allowed to continue, cats have a tendency to spray over and over again in the same spot.

What's more important? Keeping fur off your desk, or urine out of your clothes? Maybe it's time to let him back on the desk.

That is the worst suggestion ever. You can't teach cats not to do something by just allowing them to do it. His being removed from a desk has nothing to do with him peeing on things.

I have a cat. And I've had many, many, many cats over the years and know for a fact that they don't. I am not saying that they are stupid. They are far from that. But they do not do things out of spite - it is a foreign concept to them.
 
Speaking of... my Maine my excellent compatriot just made a pain in the ass of himself on my desk trying to drink out of my water glass. That's his way of telling me that he felt the water in his dish was not fresh enough. He got his way -- I gave him fresh water (he demands I change it several times a day). But nah... they're stupid animals incapable of thought. Those 2 incidences couldn't have been related.

I have a cat. And I've had many, many, many cats over the years and know for a fact that they don't. I am not saying that they are stupid. They are far from that. But they do not do things out of spite - it is a foreign concept to them.
