She could live in hoboken or the newly developed newport area of Jersey City. Either way she can live like a queen..

BTw what does your sister do for a living ?

the cost of living in nyc is way too expensive. so your sister could save money by living in hoboken, nj (nice place to live) and commute to nyc.

She's a female business professional. Usually they've put raising a family on the back burner vs. advancing their career...at least for the time being.

I don't know exactly what she does but its in international business and she's 29.

She speaks 6 languages and she's good with numbers. And she has a scary memory, like an elephant....almost photographic. One story is that she met a person just for a few minutes.......met them again after 9 years and she remember the face, name, details of conversation, clothes they were wearing, etc.

She mentioned that she has to travel internationally minimum 10-12 times a year.

That was my first instincts when she told me the hard numbers.
With her not having any kind of financial obligations, for example, she just paid her last student loans early this year, she can easily have a good life even if she goes for an expensive apartment rent.

She could easily have a good life on $50-60k probably too...doesn't mean you go for a low salary.

If it were $120 in NYC vs $98 in Raleigh, that would be a pretty different story...but an extra $50k on top of that and almost double the Raleigh pay; it's a freaking no brainer.

I agree that calc is great. However (it shows Raleigh at $98 is like living in NYC at $179k); it doesn't show 'quality' of living. To me neither of those places would be my picks...but NYC would be tons ahead of Raleigh.

It looks like both are a wash...I am betting with a smart head in NYC your sister could stretch the dollars more though.

fact is, with 178K, you don't NEED to live in NJ. sure if you want to save more fine. but my guess, the take home would be about about 7k-8k a month?

a studio in nyc runs about 1400 on the UES, a one bedroom about 2-3k...

thats still more than enough to survive....

i spend roughly $100 a week on breakfast and lunch...i count dinner seperately...

You people make it seem like 178k and she'd still be living like a pauper or something...sheesh

What about the angle that for the same monthly expense, for example $3000, she can 'rent' a nice apartment in NYC versus owning a mcmansion in NC, therefore starting equity.

she can take a big chunk of her salary out, buy a decent sized place in NC, while still working in NYC, and still be pretty well off...

Agreed. With a $98k salary in Raleigh you can afford a large house, in a nice, quiet, safe neighbourhood...and then what? There is not much else to do here, especially for someone who is single, compared to NYC. I make a comparable salary living in Cary and would happily move to NYC for $170k - heck, I would do it for $150k...well, maybe :)

Well yeah, there is that.

I'd call a one bedroom apartment a pauper.

If she has to travel frequently internationally in either position, NYC would be the much better option. RDU has only 2 international flights, IIRC - one to London and the other to Toronto, I think. She would have to first fly to DC or Charlotte to get to most places.

she's career oriented, not a homebody, and not mechanically-inclined around the house....so NYC would be a perfect fit.

on the other hand, having a mcmansion in NC would get her feet wet into being a 'house' person, doing the lawn, etc, the joys of home ownership.

I can't help but keep rallying for NYC. You're only young once - she needs to sow her wild oats. Unless she's the kind of person who enjoys sitting home by herself she needs to live large.

She should move to Boston. Everyone else on ATOT is.

bag of dog shit > Boston

fixed :p

I'd vote for NC, if only because NYC already has enough annoying sex in the city wannabes clogging up my streets and driving up rent prices.

/two more weeks till I get the hell out of this area
