wanted: RWD coupe with good handling

got: genesis coupe. i'm happy.

should have also considered: subaru WRX, used G35/350z, used GTO (damn hard to find in my area)

Wanted: New 2011 Ford Fiesta 5-door (hatchback) 5-speed manual with Sync for about $15,500.
Getting: New 2011 Toyota Corolla 5-speed manual for $13,506.

$15,500 probably was a little unrealistic for the Fiesta, which probably would have been $16-17K, so let me ask: Most things equal beyond a style/brand preference, is it silly to give up on the car you really wanted over a few thou' or is that more than enough reason for most to jump ship?

Depends on how long you keep your vehicles. If you buy new and keep them ten years or more then getting the newer platform of the Ford (I think is newer than the Corolla) might be the best way to go.

If you are new every few or five, then the value of the Toyota is probably the better choice. I've driven a lot of the late model Corolla via my rentals at hertz and found them to be pretty nice cars for the most part. -given the budget/cost.

You can always work another Ford Dealer over or go back to the current dealer and explain the price difference between the two and that you are torn between the value of the Toyota and explain that if they can make the gap closer by $500, you'll buy on the spot. It is what I just did in buying my new truck... and they went for it. You do however have to be prepared to walk away to the toyota if you don't get your way and know that you gave it your best try.

wanted: steel blue z-71 all terrain 1500 gmc sierra

got: silver birch z-71 all terrain 1500 gmc sierra

Wanted : RWD 4-door sedan
Got : Loaded 06 Lincoln LS THX/Navi/HID

Very happy with the ride 🙂
Another nice thing is that it's not nearly as common as other lux cars.

Current car

Wanted: White Pearl CR-Z EX 6MT
Bought: White Pearl CR-Z EX 6MT

Previously,

Wanted: Regal Blue Pearl Legacy GT Limited 5MT sedan
Bought: Satin White Pearly Legacy GT base 5MT sedan

What can I say, my now wife was right on both counts. The cloth seats were better than leather and white looked much better than dark blue. I still miss having that sunroof though.

If you were paying cash for a $3x,000 car, and wanted the GT500...you should have done the Boss 302 for $7k more.

Although the 302 falls right between a GT and GT500 price wise, it's really a different car that serves a different purpose. If you are a track guy, yes, the 302 is a great option. If you are not, I wouldn't even consider it. For me, it is either GT or GT500, and quite honestly, they need to integrate a backup cam in the GT500. I love that thing. And like calvie said, you'll also miss out on other Premium options when you go the 302 route. Not something I'd want to give up. IMO, the extra $7K would be better spent, dropping the GT an inch and installing the 624HP supercharger. 🙂

Wanted: an AWD, manual, hatchback, two-door.
There are about a half-dozen choices in Europe, only one available here, Golf R.

wanted: s2000
got: altima se-r

couldn't bring myself to make an s2k a daily driver so settled with something cheap on insurance, plenty of power, still 6 speed funs...

i still search for s2000s though LOL

Wanted: 2007 Mazdaspeed3
Bought: 2006 Mazdaspeed6 GT

The ended up getting the speed6 for the same price as the sticker price of the speed3.

I don't settle, I save until I can get what I want. I'd hate to walk into the garage every day and think, "I wish I'd waited and gotten what I really want".

Wanted: Indisputable power; to be damn near invincible at stoplights and merges after putting up with nonstop unsolicited pissing contests against my slow Camry for several years. The exact opposite of what I already had.

Got: Kenne Bell '03 Cobra

Wanted something practical, fun to drive, and cheap to own. Got a Mazda3 🙂
Next car I want something with AWD for ski trips.
