Canadian Troops killed by US Pilot in Afghanistan

shinerburke, you are a worthless human being. to say you're old dog sh*t under my shoe would be giving you too much credit.

well, accidents are unavoidable, but it is sad when troops from your own country die. we have less troops so incidents like this happen less often and it still hits us hard. canadian media is making a big deal of it right now but of course we understand it's an accident, and quite a common one (having troops die in training). it is the most serious loss of life for canadians in a warzone since korea, so the media here will probably overblow the whole incident for a while...

Sorry to hear that...

Just remember they died while trying to make the world safer and terror-free. It's a tragedy when anyone dies while fighting the good fight, but it's even worse when it is a mistake and his own side kills them. Hopefully they can get to the bottom of what went wrong so this kind of event won't happen again in the future..

They died serving their country and humanity

May God bless them.

I can't believe there are some guys here who are making jokes about such a tragic event. These Canadians are our brothers who stand by us and stood by us on Sept 11 and you actually find it humorous that we accidently killed some of them? 🙁

<< OMG!!! Is that seriously the unit's name? BWWWAAAAHHHHH!!!! >>

The Canadian military has a long and proud tradition. They do very well considering the amount of support they get from their own goverment. What would really be funny is if cattlegod were actually stupid enough to say that to someones face. they would spend the following hour wondering how their noses got on the other side of their heads. Now that would be hilarious.

<< This is getting rediculous. We drop heavy machinery on each other, blow ourselves up, and now bomb our allies. With all these fsck-ups Al Qaeda is going to wind up winning
now, Canadian troops need to watch out for both terrorists and american pilots mistaking their green fatigues as the enemy.
Ok, I can understand them getting killed during action on the front lines, but this!!!
>>

I'll just assume you are all ignorant and not stupid. All military training is inherently dangerous. It is literally a 0 defect evolutiion. How many of you can say that you work in a 0 defect job and if a mistake is made someone is likely to die? Training also intensifies the closer you get to deployment making the likelihood of accidents even more prevalent. That is exactly what this was- an accident. Regrettable and tragic, probably avoidable, we don't know yet, but still an accident. They do happen. They always will. But to say some of things that were said above is just ignorant and way off base.

Edited to give shinerburke the benefit of the doubt.

I don't wish to demean the Canadian military, and this isn't the thread for humor, obviously.

But does "Princess Patricia's anything" sound like a particularly threatening group that will strike fear into the hearts of it's enemies?

<< Damn....sounds like we just wiped out the entire Canadian military. >>

Have you no tact? That might have been a funny little joke if maybe a Canadian soldier sprained a pinky or something, but people died, trying to help defend our country and freedom, moron. They should be given medals, not jokes making light of their misfortune.

Have some class. You don't make fun of anyone when it involves people being killed, American or not, unless of course they belong to Al- Keida.

Did you guys see what the Pentagon said?

The guy who is responsible for dropping bombs dropped them WITHOUT permission because he thought they were under hostile fire (he saw the muzzle fire on the ground) & his life was in danger. The training mission also took place in a red zone so when they checked the GPS coordinates before dropping obviously an error was made. Tragic..
of course this is not confirmed yet, just what i've been hearing on CTV Canada AM. an investigation is going to take place.

shinerburke, and no it's not the entire army. the Princess Patricia's battalion sent 800 troops alone. :disgust:

I would like to say thank you and offer my condolences to our Canadian brothers.
We've stood side-by-side through thick and thin and this will be no different.

These proud Canadian soldiers are no different to American soldiers, Australian soldiers, British soldiers, etc.
ALL of these guys are there in hell(Afghanistan) fighting so the rest of our pansy asses are safer.

Know your friends in this world.... Canada is most certainly among the best... so we mourn WITH you not FOR you.

<< I would like to express my sadness for the deaths of the Canadians in this accident.

I would also like to say to the jerkoffs that felt this was a humorous situation. I hope that you never loose a family member overseas.

Christ, thats terrible. :| 🙁

Sorry guys! 🙁

I am one who has never been above poking a little jibe at our northern neighbors now and then. I say this so as not to be accused of being a hypocrite. That being said...

I come from a very long line of men who have volunteered to wear a uniform for their country. Even the country my originals emigrated from. Service includes the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Spanish/American war, Civil War(both sides), WWI & II, Korea so on and so forth. My deepest sympathy to the families of the fallen and the country that produced them. I am sure their unit can, does and should wear their name with pride.

If you have never had the guts, honor or sense of duty to wear the uniform you should shut the f@ck up. You have no right to make light of a units proud name, the country that asked them to serve or the way they fell. It's easy to sit back and post your bullsh!t on some internet forum feeling oh so smug about your pathetic little life. Flag draped caskets will be flown back with honor shortly to be returned to their families. I wish you could stand there and see that process take place so you could understand just how insignificant you are to the rest of us.

<< I'm sorry our unit names don't please you, a$$hole. We were a British colony for a long time, and we still hold strong ties to them. I'm sorry that you find our Royal names hilarious. You disgust me. Especially when your own pilot kills 4 of ours guys, there to help you, voluntarily. Then you laugh. Your sad...

I cannot put into words my sheer disgust. I tried, but words cannot show what I feel at that comment.

I agree that it shouldn't have been said and also, am very grateful that Canada's willing to get up and fight alongside us, but don't think you're just helping us.

If America goes down, Canada goes down, plain and simple...that's most of your trade gone and nearly all of your national defense.

Don't act like Canada's not getting something out of a tougher stance on terrorism

This was a terrible accident and tradgedy. All the way into work this morning, I was listening to the reports on what happened.

Sounds like our troops were conducting a scheduled training excercise with live ammo. A U.S. fighter was mistakenly in the restricted airspace over the excercise (sounds like something got miscommunicated) and mistook the excercise for enemy fire. He dropped at least one bomb which killed 4 of our troops and injured 12 others.

I can only imagine how the families and friends of the dead and injured must feel, but my heart also goes out to the American pilot... he must feel absolutely terrible even though he may have had no fault in the incident at all...

You wanna hear something else? As I drove in I wondered what the thread on AT would look like... I imagined several people would take pot-shots at us, and mock the pain and tradgedy of what has happened.

Hell, I even expected someone to chime in with "Well the stupid Canucks shouldn't have been in our way!" - kinda sad what kind of rep a percentage of this board have, huh?

To my American friends who join us in mourning this loss of our troops over there fighting terrorism - thank you. Everyone I have talked to here bears no ill will to the U.S. military over what was so obviously a tradgic accident.

To the Americans who use this to poke fun or mock our brave troops and our country: fvck you all to hell.

🙁

it seems that there are more reports of accidental deaths for the western armies than there are of kills by the taliban, anyone have numbers?

I would say that's probably correct. This was the case in Desert Storm also where FF was responsible for 80% (if I remember correctly) of allied casualties.

Ok, first off let me apologize for the comments posted in this thread that offended everyone. I like many here like to poke fun at Canada from time to time but I would never make the comments that were in this thread. Last night I had a few people over to watch some videos, drink, and play pool/foosball in my newly completed game room. One of the guys, his name is Jason, asked to use my computer to check his email and browse the net for a while. I said ok and didn't think anything of it. Just a now I got on and was browsing ATOT and got a PM from someone telling me I was an A-hole, I responded that he was a jackass and didn't think anything of it since those sort of things occasionally happen. I then jumped into OT and started reading threads that looked interesting. I came across this thread and was horrified. The hatred directed towards the comments posted under my name are 100% justified as they were crass, uncaring, and something no decent human would ever say. I have friends I met in college that are Canadian, I have a friend(Rob Anders) who is a member of the House of Commons, and I also have several members of my family who are current or past members of the U.S. Armed Forces. I know the sacrifices that people who join the military make, I know the worry that the families of those people go through(my cousin in the USMC hasn't been heard from since late October. All we know is that he and his tank battalion are somewhere in the Middle East), and I can only imagine the pain that people who lose a loved one in military service must go through. Please accept my deepest apology and regret for the loss of your men's lives and the senseless comments that were posted here under my user name. I cannot tell you how sorry I am that this happened but it will not happen again and the person who did it WILL be dealt with.

in our local paper (winnipeg free press) there was a list of military mistakes that have taken place already;
1. Nov 26; f-18 bombed the prison in Mazar-e-Sharif, injuring 5 U.S. soldiers "Procedural errors in transmitting co-ordinates to the plane"
2. Nov 28; U.S. Helicopters attack Navy ground force. No injuries. "communication procedure failure"
3. Dec 5; B-52 bombs U.S./Afghan forces near Kandahar, 3 americans, 7 afghans dead. "Procedural errors in transmitting co-ordinates to the plane"
4. Dec.22; U.S. planes bombed a caravan of Afghan leaders (not taliban).
5. Jan 23; U.S. Forces raid two friendly compounds near Hazar Qadam. the afghans were spooked and shot back, U.S. kills 16.
6. March 17; U.S. fighters bomb canadians.

seriously, this is a bit rediciulous. America is the pinnacle of civilization, with the best communication devices at its disposal. It's not like you're using smoke signals or bugle calls to say what to attack! What gives?

So some guy used your account? What a f**ky! I didn't read the thread yet but knowing this I'll be sure to keep it in mind ;0

<< So some guy used your account? >>

That's what I assume since he was in here using the PC while I was out playing pool, & etc. I had left ATOT up due to the fact that I was posting something in the "NAKED PICS OF SMIRNOFFISTASTY" thread and was looking at it from time to time when I wasn't up for a shot in pool or doing something else.

Actually, to be honest I was shocked that Shiner made those comments. I didn't previously think he'd be that rude and crappy.

I'm willing to believe his explaination.

Next time, log out of AT if you let other people use your computer.

Yeah sh*t like that CAN happen, so I'm definitely chalking it up to a-hole friend behavior!

And when I said "logout" I mean logout. Don't just close IE. Click the logout button THEN close IE.

It's called war. It's the nature of the beast. Mistakes WILL ALWAYS happen.

This campaign has been one of the most successful in history in terms of limiting collateral and FF deaths.
