I hear it like crazy and for some reason my parents don't. They will turn the cable box off and leave the TV on. They think it's shut off cause they can't hear that friggin noise. Drives me crazy.

<-- runs for the pills (hehe)

All the time, Drives me nut because not everyone hears it. For example. I was in a room where the tv was on, but the channel was black, I asked the teacher if they where going to turn off the tv. They said "It is off", So I went over, hit the off switch, and watched the tube cool down. Needless to say they ask "How did you know it was on?" And I said I could hear it. It really sucks sometimes because people think your crazy, But I know, I KNOW!!!.

Oh and btw, to the post about knowing when people are close, I can tell the same thing, I dont know what it is but I usually know when someone is closing in on me, Even with my eyes shut.

Yes, older people tend to not be able to hear high pitched things as well. I think it's called the threshold of hearing. The older you get, the less high frequencies you can hear. What's worse is I can hear my computer monitor's squeal, and it's particularly bad at lower resolutions like 1024x768, my gaming resolution.

Nope, I can't hear it. I think my hearing is backwards or something. I hear low-pitched things like people's bass through walls but not the TV being on. I never even realized that my TV made noise until one day one of my roommates asked if the TV was on after another roommate had been playing videogames and left the TV on in video mode.

Many people I know aren't able to hear the flyback transformer whine at ~16kHz. I can easily hear it, though -- perhaps a 'benefit' of having attended very few rock concerts -- and I agree that it is annoying. You could pick up an LCD or plasma TV if it really bothers you, and even CRT-based RPTVs whine less than direct-view CRT TVs since the tubes are much smaller (usually 7 inches).

And it'll eventually go away with age :). Not sure exactly when, of course... I'm past 30 and still easily hear the whine. It can freak some people out when you can walk into a house and immediately tell that someone left a TV turned on at the other end of the house. :).

Most of the time I can, yes, especially on tube TVs. But with my RPTV, I can't "hear" it at all. Especially sometimes when I'll turn off the XBOX, and leave it on the input channel, if I forget to switch back to the satellite, the only way I can tell it's on at all is the little green light on the power button.

Yes. Always have been able to and still can at 33. It's a high-pitched whine up near 20kHz (which is about the limit of human hearing). Not loud though, sometimes it's almost something you think you sense rather than hear.

I can hear it only if the TV is CRT (either tube or CRT projection) based. If the tv is a projection thats based off LCD, or DLP, i cannot hear it.

I can definitely hear it. I hate it. I tell my parents to keep the volume on or turn the tv off. First it's usually quiet, but if there is no other noise, I just seem to unconsiously focus on it and it gets quite loud. I tell my parents and they're like "WTF are you talking about?" to which I respond "The TV is making noise" and they think I'm insane!

Tell them that they're just OLD and their hearing is shot.

I can. My parents computer monitor makes it as well sometimes (randomly). Neither of my parents can hear it. My sisters can both hear it.

Same things when my computer is off but the speakers are on. I can always tell if I forget to turn them off once I lay in bed.

Yeah, I can't hear a RPTV either, unless I get up close, but that's probably not the same noise. The noise on normal TVs can be quite loud sometimes. It's very annoying. On older televisions, sometimes it sounds to me like it can drown out the sound, if it's turned down relatively low. My friends say I'm crazy or something... most of them can only hear a little bit of a whine. I find that my friends who are musicians tend to be able to hear it better.

Yes, I can hear it from a good distance away. I can be walking up the stairs of my house, and hear the TV on in rooms with doors closed.

Yes, I can. Sometimes I can also hear a certain noise when somebody is nearby, I've never been able to explain it, but if at night someone is coming near me I can kind of detect this quiet high pitched buzz. Maybe it's some kind of defense mechanism that heightens hearing ability when another person is suspected to be present... just don't know.

I have the same thing. Even when I'm playing a game, like CS. If someone is coming up behind me I always know.
