I was on a cruise last year for a week. I do not recall using anything with a laser on it personally for a few days on it.

I had my first hands on in 1988 but honestly I was pretty stupid about the whole thing back then and just thought it was "cool". It was those things, however that sparked my interest to actually become knowledgeable in matters! The rest is history.

So after they find a cold spot on the track how do they heat it up?

There is a "dryer truck" that blasts it with high velocity heated air. The concern is more removing moisture than the cold because of the thermal capacitance of water.

Does it use a laser? :hmm:

Even better if it were remote controlled!

Imagine that a remote controlled pavement heating truck with the operator eating fruit loops! :D

I was going to say "I could go a day without reading optical media" which is i think the only instance I used Lasers...

Then I flipped my g5 over, "Class 1, Laser Product".

Welp, there goes that :p

Actually, it does! There is a laser sight that shines down the side so the driver can track his path. :D

Hmmm I would love to convert that into an AGV. Think of a Roomba. Just a little bigger. ;)

I have a Logitech mouse that says "High Precision Laser" around the camera hole, but nowhere on the mouse is a label that says anything about it being a "Class X Laser".

My '518 doesn't even pretend.

I'd love it to vac leaves from my yard. ;)

What do you do with the leaves after they are binned?
A macerating impeller system could grind them up like tea leaves making disposal easier or possibly using them as fuel?

more powerful laser for burning?

Laser schmazer, I can go two weeks without using electricity.

That's pretty badass. People; I'd say the proverbial gauntlet has been thrown! Amish stylee FTW!

I was feeling pretty confident that I could do it until I was reminded that the internet uses fiber optics...i.e. lasers. Me no win this one.

Not while i'm at work or at home.

But while camping, definitely.

A few 200W bars would do it but then you'd have more smoke then it would take to make everyone think you were cremating Sam McGee!

"It was icy cold, but the hot sweat rolled down my cheeks, and I don’t know why;
And the greasy smoke in an inky cloak went streaking down the sky."

What do you think I do with them now? ;)

I live in Ohio, we don't care about the environment or our "carbon footprint".

G5 IS a Class 1 Laser. I don't know what you're thinking Ruby. Maybe you're mixing it up with the MX500 class which is your typical optical LED.

But the only laser products I use at home are optical drives... at least that's what I can think of now.

I use a laser scriber at work and some laser based distance sensors, so I suppose taht would make life difficult if those things broke down...

Yes that is correct. This is why I asked for a scan to be sure. You would be surprise how many folks see a bright red light and automatically think laser. ;)

Coming down from the mountain pass I saw that the snowplows now have green lasers that shoot ahead so they can better tell where the edge of their plow will be.

lasers kick ass

hmmm...
I'll use today, fairly typical day except for one notable exception...

I don't use my PC's optical drive all that often. Today? Nope.
My PS3 (BD, DVD).. today? Nope
My mouse? It's a Razer DeathAdder, which uses a "3G infrared sensor". Fairly confident that's not a laser. So... Today? N/A
In my truck? I have a CD player, but I always use my Zune through the Aux input. So, no lasers used.
From outside my truck? And not directly used by me, but my actions caused their use? Well Mr. Police Man might have used a laser range gun versus a RADAR gun to determine my speed was enough for him to turn around from the other side of the highway to pull me over.

My day's use of lasers is now in question because I do not know what that damned state trooper used to clock me.

Not sure about the mouse however...

Posting this means you're using lasers (they light the tubes!).

Turning on your PC applies power to your optical drives. All optical drives upon power up will energize the pickup laser. The focus servo will check for a disc. ;)
