I only need it to cut a few shitty trees down, but cant find anything cheap. I dont wanna drop a ton of money for basically a day of usage. Would i be better off renting?

I went to Home Depot and got the $69 special. Works good enough for a few shitty trees.

Rent from Home Depot or get a cheap Poulan.

Do you know why they're named Poulan? Because you have to keep pullin' and pullin' to get them started.

I'd price a rental. Around here it looks like I can rent a 16" gas saw for $25 for 4 hours or $45 for the day. I love buying tools, but I can't really justify owning my own chainsaw.

Anyone with a decent chainsaw would be a fool to lend it out. It is an easy tool to screw up when used by a noob.

Yeah, but there are people all over the place with cheap saws. I'd only lend my pro grade Stihl to a few people (most of them loggers.)

Usually, I go to Harbor Freight for cheap one-time-use tools, but Harbor Freight's chain saw is $60. You might as well the $70 from Home Depot.

ill check it out.

at first i wanted to spend $80, but quickly found that saws of that quality are utter shit, then said $100, realized the same, then $150, realized those are still shitty...and now im finding if i want a (barely) decent saw ill have to spend upwards of $250. i had no idea these damn things were so expensive.

and bryophyte, lol at your poulan thing...every review ive read says as much.

You should be able to get an entry level Husqvarna for about $200.

Bought my buddy one as a wedding gift - about $220 with tax.

Depending on where you live, a good chainsaw can be a invaluable investment.

We've got a Stihl Farm Boss that's been a tank.

How big are the trees (diameter)? If they are fairly small (<2ft?) you can get away with using a poulan. Good luck cutting down a monster of a tree with one though. You need a real chainsaw to get that kind of job done.

I would just rent one for the day, and have done so the couple times I needed. I'd rather spend the $50 for a day with a solid/efficient tool that gets the job done.

Where I live, a chainsaw simply isn't needed unless you're having to clean up after a big storm.

Sometimes you get what you pay for, and chainsaws are a good example of that. Your better off renting a good Stihl, then buying a cheap piece of junk.

My stihl is about 20 years old and cuts through trees like their made of butter. Once you use a stihl and a piece of crap side-by-side, you sill never go back.

The only real saws on the market are either Husqvarna or Sthil.

As is usual after AT advice, I now want to buy a uber chainsaw lol. I'll probably drop only about $200 though since my dad says he doesn't wanna spend a lot or rent.
Do you guys trust refurbished?

Sometimes. Call around to the local small engine shops. They often have chain saws that were brought in for repairs...then never picked up. Many also have good used ones that were taken as trade-ins.

I'm serious, get a cheap electric, they'll handle a few shitty trees and none of the mess with a gas chainsaw.

Ya, I might fall a tree for someone but I wouldn't lend out my saw. I like the chain too much.

For $200, your not going to get much of a gas chainsaw

Only if it comes from the local Stihl repair shop.

If all you have are a couple of trees, rent a good quality chainsaw for a weekend, or buy a handsaw or an axe.

Having to use crap saws is not worth the aggravation as they bog down in the middle of a cut.

I picked up a Craftsman for $25 bucks on craigslist. Add the $12 oil pump for the fix and viola under $50 for a chainsaw. 16" bar, 36cc, cuts no problems. If you're handy, not a bad way to go. My FIL gave me a hand with the oil pump replacement. I'll need a new chain soon, but that's due to user error :)

I recommend spending about 20 minutes on youtube learning about how to use it if you have no previous experience.
