Calling parents by first name..

Why am I not suppose to call my parents by their first name? Where did this come from and why is it so? Why is it disrespectful? Also why am I suppose to call teachers by their last names but it's ok for me to call my neighbors by their first name? IMO, it's bullshit.

If I'm require to call my parents mom and dad, why aren't they required to call their children by 'son' or 'daughter' and 'teachers' would call their students only by their last name as well?

Honestly man, why do you bring this stuff upon yourself? You know this thread is going to go down in flames.

It's a societal norm; it's just the way things have progressed. Different titles show different levels of respect and formality.

Your parents are allowed to call you whatever they want because they created you, and they provide your every necessity (for the most part) for quite some time.

In terms of teachers and students, the two aren't on equal footing; a teacher possesses knowledge that, at least theoretically, the students do not. In exchange for receipt of that knowledge, students are expected to show respect and adherence to the teacher's guidelines.

Unless said elder specifies that I not refer to them with a proper "sir or miss", I call them by their first name.
Even if I know I can call someone by their first name I still refer to them as sir or miss half the time, in a somewhat joking manner. Just something I do I guess.

I always refer to my parents are sir, mam, mother or father. Southern graces I guess.

If I ever hear someone call their parents by their first name I automatically assume they were adopted, were a step child or were just a bad child in general.

You should call your mom bitch, because you are a son of a bitch.
lol wow, that was amazing

OP: Does something this small in life really have to be questioned? Surely there are more important things to waste time on

Imagine the awkwardness of a little boy tugging at his father's pants while in public.

"David... I want pizza."
"David... I want piiiiiiiiiiizzzzaaaa."

**STOMP STOMP STOMP**

"I want pizza, David... NOW!!!"

i call all of my family by there first names except for my father. i'd call him by his first name too if it wasn't the same as mine. i refuse to call him dad so i just avoid directly addresing him.

Down here in the south when addressing an elder thats not immediate family they usually call they person mister or miss, then the first name. for example, let's take goku's mom's name as pointed out ealier, Bitch Goku, would be Miss Bitch.

Up north where I was raised We never did that.

Maybe someday, you can raise ill-mannered children. They can call you mate, homes, chubby or rolla or whatever. Train a little you for world domination.

You are 13, right? Your parents own you mind, body & soul. Live on their terms, their rules, their regulations. Try to be normal for a change.

i don't use names anymore to address my parents... it's pretty much understood that i'm talking to them when i'm looking at them....

Are you adopted, by any chance? Because the only time I've heard of kids calling their parents by their first names is when they're adopted..

Plain and simple its respect. They have money that is providing for you, your teachers have spent money that was spent to educate you and other people live around you because they spent the money and now have to deal with you. Thus, they can call you whatever they want.

as the intro movie to GTA2 states: respect...is everything! (sorry. couldn't help it. :laugh😉 your parents don't have to respect you the same way you must respect them. in the same way, one of the unspoken rules for students is to have respect for their teachers.
