First, it's a respect thing that grew out of tradition. They are older and wiser in years than you are.

Second, think basic child psychology. If you're raising a child, you do not want them to see you as equals. In order to parent, there has to be hierarchy, with the parents at the top.

That's true... I think such social orms dveloped whereever you required disciplining , be it child-parent, student-teacher or the military...

EDIT: Damn my spelling skills

If I'm require to call my parents mom and dad, why aren't they required to call their children by 'son' or 'daughter' and 'teachers' would call their students only by their last name as well?

You don't call them by their first names because it's disrespectful. It's a culture thing plus it's about human hierchary(sp?). But since you are a redneck it doesn't apply to you.

it's just a norm, i guess. in my best friend's family growing up, everyone in the family uses first names. i always thought it was weird, but i got used to it. i think if anything it was a way to give the kids some respect and to encourage them to speak (and be spoken to) in a mature way. there was never any baby talk in that family. i call everyone in my family by their relation, except for those whose relation is not immediately evident.

if im in a group of people, and yelling "mom/dad" wont get anything, ill yell their first name.

very few adults do i refer to with their first name.

i am however, beginning to do it more and more as i get older.
