First, it's a respect thing that grew out of tradition. They are older and wiser in years than you are.
Second, think basic child psychology. If you're raising a child, you do not want them to see you as equals. In order to parent, there has to be hierarchy, with the parents at the top.

You don't call them by their first names because it's disrespectful. It's a culture thing plus it's about human hierchary(sp?). But since you are a redneck it doesn't apply to you.
