First, it's a respect thing that grew out of tradition. They are older and wiser in years than you are.

Second, think basic child psychology. If you're raising a child, you do not want them to see you as equals. In order to parent, there has to be hierarchy, with the parents at the top.

Why am I not suppose to call my parents by their first name? Where did this come from and why is it so? Why is it disrespectful? Also why am I suppose to call teachers by their last names but it's ok for me to call my neighbors by their first name? IMO, it's bullshit.

If I'm require to call my parents mom and dad, why aren't they required to call their children by 'son' or 'daughter' and 'teachers' would call their students only by their last name as well?

lol

cuz you're a retard?

I call my mum mother when I am angry/disappointed/disagree with her.

I'd feel weird calling her by her first name.
I think I still call her by those terms to help remind her who she is.
She sometimes forgets.

Damn, this is what I should have said before. Best answer yet.

no one says you have to do it, if you really wanted to disrespect them and call them by their first name then go ahead.

and on another note, looks like this teenage rebellion/angst thing is coming along nicely

It's about respect. If you call your parents by their first names, you fail to display the proper respect towards your parental units.

Down here in the south when addressing an elder thats not immediate family they usually call they person mister or miss, then the first name.

And people really do that? That's BS. No one deserves any sort of respect just because they happen to be born earlier than you.

Do you have any respect for anyone?

It has a bit to do with respect, but mainly we do it because it's a societal norm we've grown accustomed to. By the time we're old enough to examine these sorts of norms, they've become embedded within us and it feels very awkward to act otherwise, not to mention people might take offense to our departure from the norm. It's for this same reason you'd feel awkward if you delved into details with your mom about how much you'd like to blow some chick, no matter how much the matter is on your mind (at least most people would feel awkward doing this).
