you have the freedom to hit yourself in the head with a hammer and lick pipe mold, but just because you are free to do it doesn't mean that it isn't stupid, and doing stupid things is a perfectly legitimate reason to get fired.
I agree with you on the Prez. but the finger in front of the children was wrong. Yes I have a 10 yr old and no I have never flipped someone off in front of him.
I would expect a little better from an adult.

I look at it this way: During business hours, any time I'm doing any business, or any time that I'm wearing my company's name or logo, I have a responsibility to the company to act in a manner that is consistent with the company policies.
This woman was on official business. She was wrong to do what she did because she wasn't just representing herself when she did it. It's not just because it was the President that got the finger.
With that said, these are simply my beliefs. I'm not trying to force them on anyone, but seriously, how could what she did be acceptable to her bosses? I would have fired her too. It could have been Bush, Kerry, Nader, a homeless guy, whoever.
Now, was it within her rights as a US citizen? Absolutely. It was a very lowbrow thing to do, but maybe that's just who she is.

Why wasn't dumbya fired for flipping off the camera back in his governor days? It was better than a flaming bag of rat feces. Which is much more appropriate and deserving.

:thumbsup: If I were to flip someone-anyone the bird while on company time, I would be fired in a heartbeat. I would not do it front of my child nor would I want someone who has charge of him to do it.
To those who say that middle schools already know what it means, you are right they do. My son was in 2nd grade when someone in his class flipped off the teacher. when asked by the principal why he did that, he stated his dad does it all the time to people "Who piss him off". Thats some kind off parenting there :roll:

Freedom of speech does NOT mean freedom from consequences for that speech.
An employer has every right to expect proper behavior from their employees, and can terminate employees for behaving in a way that is contrary to their job description.
This bus driver was responsible for children. As such, they are obviously forbidden to make obscene gestures WHILE ON THE JOB.
It really is that simple Dave. To take away this right of an employer to set rules and standards, you rob them of their rights.
No one is saying the bus driver does not have freedom of speech. No government agency has arrested her. However, she is NOT free from the social consequences of her actions. NOTHING unconstitutional has happened here, Dave.
Funny, I don't see private citizens or employers listed there at all. Only Congress.
She was fired for the same reason people on these forums are banned. As long as she is at work, she must follow the rules of her employer. Just as it is here, while you post on the forums, you must follow the rules of AT.

I get the feel from your posts that you don't quite grasp the concept of what rights actually are. In America, we more or less have free will in many areas that individuals in other countries don't. Despite what many people think, the Constitution isn't a free ticket to do or say what you want. I can walk up to a woman while at work, and use my free speech to tell her, "Damn, looking at you makes me want to ****** you so badly." But there are consequences. You pull the word "patriotic" out while describing a woman who flipped off the president. I'd like to take this moment to enlighten you...flipping off the representative of a company doesn't make you that company's supporter. The same concept applies to a country. If you can get your redneck buttscratching ass off of the god damn bandwagon and maybe *gasp* get some formal education that actually supplies knowledge of what the constitution guarantees, as far as rights, maybe you could avoid invoking the Constitution the next time someone flips someone off while working with children.
By the way, it doesn't freaking matter what the damn kids SAW. The fact is, if you're a loose enough cannon to just flip off someone you don't like, despite there being kids nearby, then maybe you don't need to keep that job with kids, hmm pumpkin?

Which is part of the problem with politics; +90% of the time, there is no immediate reaction/consequences to misbehavior, lies, or stupidity on their part. We have to wait a few years until election when the gnat-like attention span of most voters will be distracted by all the pretty lights and colors of their election campaign. Until that time they're perfectly free to lie, cheat, and steal (ever seen a politician turn DOWN a pay raise? Didn't think so) and we can't do a damned thing about it.
And yes I'm bitter about the whole process. The city I live in should have had a complete and total clearing of city hall last election for the reason that they were all lying, cheating incompetents who wasted our money and gave us nothing in return but higher debt, higher taxes, and less services. But the population felt that it was worth giving them another chance and voted all but 2 of the incumbents back into office. Considering this city also reelected a mayor (previous to the current) after she decided she would take a vacation instead of, you know, actually campaign, I have very little faith in the voters here making a change at all, let alone a change for the better.

Free speech protects your right to be able to say something. She told the president to fvck off and she was within her rights to do so.
However, free speech does not protect you from the consequences of saying whatever it is that you said. She "said" an inappropriate thing in front of her clients - some of whom clearly saw what she did - so she was fired as she should have been.
