Regardless of political affiliation, I would prefer bus drivers not flip the bird in front of students, thank you very much. Did she do the same to drivers who cut her off?

I agree with you Vic.
Well maybe she didn't do it in full view of the students.

It's bull of course. The kids were obviously looking at the motorcade and not staring at the bus driver.

Very lame excuse on all those that support the firing of this courageous patriotic woman.

Oh yeah. Obviously....based on your eyewitness account eh? It doesn't matter, it's not appropriate behavior to encourage to middle-school aged kids, who are already the filled with enough poor manners.

Man, once in your life you need to think outside of your box. You've become a sheeple to your own ideology.

she was a idiot. not for flipping him off. hell i would have also. she was a idiot for doing on company time. Anything person does while on company time reflects the company. if they are doing something that negatively reflects on the company damn right they should get fired.

A reprimand or suspension might have been an appropriate response IMO. Firing offhand seems too vindictive, and thus political. So I think she should win.

hehe, she was wrong to do it under the circumstances, but then again you do what you gotta do when the opportunity presents itself.

 for the finger
 for doing it in front of the kids

You came to that conclusion based on the fact that she flipped off the president, eh Nostradamus?

Clearly she's the new Rosa Parks. How can you not see that?

Well she was going to get fired regardless (remember, they were going to call but found out she'd already been canned). If nothing else than because she did it in the presence of kids. If she behaves in such a way in front of middle-schoolers, who's to say she doesn't do such things in front of elementary-schoolers when she gets cut-off. Her boasting about in the office only serves her as an admission of guilt, and I'm willing to bet that such misconduct IS outlined in back-and-white in her employee handbook. If the fool had kept her mouth shut, then she might have been better off, but now she's screwed...as she should be, imo.

Dave would have to get a job first.

If some students did see her I'm sure it was not the first time they seen someone get flipped off before.

I agree, but she was fired precisely because it was too high profile political.

Can you not imagine the drumbeat of both faux and genuine outrage if she'd been merely reprimanded?

The children! We've got to think of the children!!

Her obscene gesture was neither courageous nor patriotic. It was just plain stupid.

Of course Free Speech is "just plain stupid"

A shame how many people live here and hate free speech and the Country.

Why don't you all leave since you hate it so much???

your momma must be proud of the tool that you are

If the penalty for a first-time offence for such an action is designated directly or indirectly as a cause for firing, then she'd lose.

If she'd done this as a habit in other cases, then I'd say that she was acting in a manner which made this event just a matter of time. But nobody here has any indication of habit, so that's another issue.

But I doubt that this punishment would be the norm for a first-time offence. If she'd done this to random driver on the road would she have been fired?

Hey, you can flip off your boss anytime you want... except while on the job and in front of the clients.

Patriotic, my ass, that's just inappropriate conduct on the job. Your freedom of speech is not infringed by getting fired for obscene gestures or words while you're driving a school bus (or on any job, for that matter.)

OK, reasonable point. I guess the humour (which the president apparently saw) of the situation made me make more light of it than most people here.

If she is too stupid to understand that type of behavior is WAY out of line when on the job, especially being a school bus driver, she doesn't deserve her job. She's a fvcking moron, plain and simple.

And let me tell you, I'm far from a Bush fan.

Too bad she got fired for that.

The role model angle is a cheap excuse. They're middle public school students. They've seen that gesture for years and know exactly what it means.

The kids knowing what it means and it being appropriate for a public servant to make the gesture at them or in front of them is miles apart.

Yes. Her action was simply a matter of free expression - an American right -- and didn't deserve being fired for.

No. That form of expression crossed the line; it sent the wrong signal to children and was disrespectful.

The Country is still full of the same hypocritic Constitution hating wusses as 2004.

Does not not bode well for Tuesday's election.

lmao

at least bush has a sense of humor.

lol, ya, as much as I think he's a moron, he is definitely a likeable guy.

It was inappropriate for her to do it in front of her students. Fired? A bit harsh. Everyone makes dumb mistakes, and I guarantee you the kids aren't shocked by a middle finger in this day and age. A good suspension would have made the point.

it's hard enough to get kids to respect authority without the bus driver flipping off the president.

A lot of bus drivers make obscene gestures and cuss and so on, I guess it's different if it's to the president or something?
