Bucket Traps.

I was thinking (after reading this article) that if you are worried about drowning being too cruel to mice, why not drop a bit of dry ice in the bottom of the trap. Let it sublimate and you'll get a bucket of CO2, with no air. Mouse falls in and suffocates in about a minute. The only downside I see is that dry ice isn't as cheap as water, and you'll probably have to refill it periodically.

Question: Isn't drowning kind of the same thing as suffocating, as in the same end results. What makes one less cruel?

I'm not a PETA nut, and I don't think drowning is a big deal, but it's an interesting idea. And Suffocating is the same as drowning, but unlike drowning, the CO2 will do it in a minute or two, not after a long struggle.
 
I used to use snare traps; Now I have 2 kittiots that catch mice. I've never felt good about trapping them. It always struck me the same as somebody putting a $10 on the ground, then dropping an anvil on your head when you bent down to pick it up. If I get a mouse from the kittiots alive, I put it in a can, and take it to the woods, about 1/2 mile away.

They're good at catching them, but they let them go so they can catch them again :^D

They'd be much more efficient and cost effective if they ate them.
 
I saw this tv show where a lady had rats in her attic. This one rat was the size of a small cat and evaded all the traps, and she wanted to kill it humanely. They used this trap called a "T-Rex", which has a bunch of spikes and snaps shut. It ended up getting stuck in it and didn't die, so she had to listen to it all night until the exterminator shot it in the head with a pellet gun. She was sobbing.

Personally, I would just use snap traps. They're better than glue traps, and if the rat doesn't die I don't care. It's a rat.

I think I'm with gar on this one. I don't see how cutting off their air supply via CO2 is any different than with water. They're still struggling to breathe in their last moments and I don't see how cutting out the oxygen w/ water vs. CO2 is going to change how long they last w/out air.

If anything, the bucket filled with water gives them a chance for a little swim before dying, plus you're breaking the fall with water not just the hard bottom of a bucket.

It's a mouse, a three foot fall isn't going to hurt it. That said, which one would you prefer.

At my mother's there was a rat raiding the bird feeder. She lives in a rowhouse, so I couldn't shoot it in the feeder without the danger of hurting someone. I trapped it in a live trap, then shot it with my air rifle. You wouldn't believe the scream that thing made :^O It took 3 pellets to kill it... I couldn't imagine hearing that sound at night, and trying to sleep. I bet it would drive a sensitive woman to cry.
 
pine sol gases them out quicker than water drowns them. hammers are very quick as well. i got a few with my blowgun last time my neighbors moved. every time that house empties, the rats are looking for a new food source. its like they are trying to move in or something.

Interesting. The question is, how horrible is death by pine-sol? Worse than CO2? Better?
 
GF has a mouse n her closet she called me one night a few weeks ago saying "something is behind my dresser scratching and eating away at a fortune cookie I dropped back there. Picked up some new style snap trap that's easy to set and very hard to accidentally set off. Put it out and BOOM 15 minutes later rat was dead. Musta been starving because he came out during the afternoon, with people in the room and went right for the trap. The trap had plastic spike nubs on it and worked great. I hate the old wood traps with the big metal hinge as I never am able to get them set properly until like 6 attempts. And almost always snap one of my fingers in it in the process. While I've never actually caught a finger in one, I can't imagine it feels very good lol.
 
Okay, you trap them in a bucket or something (no water). Then you close the lid and make it airtight. Eventually, they'll run out of oxygen and slowly fall asleep and die, pain-free. No?

But they're freaking rats, so why are we having this discussion?

I don't like rats, but if I'm going to kill one I like to make it quick. Maybe I'm a pussy or whatever, but to me even a rat shouldn't suffer any more than it has to. And I remember one time catching one but the trap didn't finish it off. Something very unnerving about hearing them screech in terror & pain while they die a slow death. As others have posted, if the rat manages to not die and is alive all night making that noise, it's just not cool 🙂 A rat however annoying, is one of Gods creatures and if I gotta kill one I'm going to try to make it an instant death.
