I picked up a 6800K this morning. It will replace one of my 6700K systems. As I have mentioned in a prior thread, one of my 6700Ks is a totally terrible overclocker even on a nice AIO watercooling setup, so that's the one that'll go.

My Q9450 died last week. Time for an upgrade Based on how long the Q9450 lasted, I'm sure a 6800K will last a decade or so

Wouldn't going from an i7-6700k to an i7-6800k be a downgrade in the gaming department? You do professional work with your PC?

Upgrading from: an i7-3930K / P9X79-DLX / 32GB DDR3 RAM

To: i7-6900K / ASUS X99-DELUXE-II / 32GB DDR4 RAM.

I'm a pro photographer and also do some video editing. I don't overclock much/often but want to upgrade to more recent tech and hope the Turbo Boost 3.0 feature will provide a a way to boost single core performance for those photo editing apps that do not benefit much from multi-cores while providing a multi-core benefit when rendering videos. I assume that feature will improve as it matures (MB BIOS updates etc.)

I'm more interested in stability and the x99 chipset, the 2nd generation MB and mature CPU tech should insure that there won't be any surprises. All three combined will (hopefully) provide a performance benefit over what I'm currently running and should be good for the next 2-3 years.

Guess I'll find out in a week when all the parts have arrived.

I do professional work with my PC, yes. But I'm not going to lie to you and tell you that's why I bought a 6800K

I bought it because I wanted it, I don't think any further justification to myself is really needed

You seem to buy a lot of CPUs, I've noticed. What do you need all the conputing power for?

I'm still undecided, so I haven't voted. I've been lusting after the 6950X for months but the benchmarks just can't (yet) convince me. I'll have a few nights out this week, and probably come back - binge on reviews - and buy immediately whatever I think is best.

Yea buddy! I had no idea you were interested in actually owning BDW-E..sweet! Where did you order and how much?

I'm going to wait a few more weeks to buy as I know there are a few more x99 refresh boards that have yet to come out...Waiting on all those and Pascal/Polaris outcome before I hit buy

Wow, 2008-2016, eight years with the same CPU. Amazing how long that chip could hold up, and hold up well.

I purchased my i7 6800k from newegg for $450 and it will be here this thursday. I am finding a lot of posts saying it overclocks for crap barely getting 4.4Ghz where the 5820k can go higher minimum 4.5 no problem at lower voltages.

I am upgrading my pc after 7 years and want to not have to upgrade again for around the same time or more. I dont want to make a mistake. My cooler for whichever will be a corsair H100i v2 and I have the asus x99-II motherboard. I dont know what would be best to do as the 5820 is overclocking better or what please help and sorry if any of this is dumb first post

Not a dumb post, there is never anything dumb about asking for help/advice. Welcome to the forums.

It's all silicon lottery, there are people on these forums who got "dud" 5820Ks, while others have gotten very good ones. I think you will be just fine with the 6800K, no reason to return it for a 5820K.

I appreciate it I just want something to last I keep going back and forth about those options or even all the posts saying the i7 6700k would have been better as I game more then anything else.

If your aim is to hold your rig for 7 years, then I would pick the 6800K over the 6700K. At some point games will make better use of more cores and over that time horizon, the quad is going to get left in the dust, IMO.

My 5820K only goes to 4.4GHz, and that's with 1.325v. I would say it's below average. I'd almost care, but since I got it for free...I shall not complain.

I appreciate it and I guess I made the better call then its just when reading everything online its like get a higher clocked cpu then cores. And it worried me as the hex cores only get around 3.5Ghz not 4 or more.

Yea that sounds below average, I have mine sitting a little under 1.2v right now at 4.4GHz.
