Yes kill it through task manager, and no nothing gets hurt, the results is saved to the auto.sav every 120sec or for how long you you specify in the config.txt : Auto-save interval (seconds; 0 for no save): 120. After the auto.sav reach a certain size it saves to the result.txt file. :D:D:D

If you select to use this on a dedicated crunching machine and run in background you might want to set advanced performance to give priority to background rather than applications.

Indeed! :D and this is done in the config.txt file:

Priority for background running ([N]ormal, [L]ow, {B]ackground): N (or B for background if you use the pc for other stuff like gaming or encoding...) :D

All depends what the cruncher...eh...pc is used for...:D

The machine Im running this on will be used only for DPAD, so you suggest what setting?

John,

I'd run Background. It's well-behaved... and produces just great!

Well, if nothing else is running, nothing will take away cpu power from the DPAD, I'm running all mine on {B] .Not sure how Windoze will act if the prcess is set to [N], but it should work with no prob! :D

OK thanks.. :)
So I have a 2.8C HT enabled with 2 Threads running in background named [TA]Mastertech01 and I have my system set to background priority. Would setting processor affinity help performance at all to that service?

What OS are you running - Win98SE V4.10.2222 A

which version of the client? - Version 4.33a

Also -- did you check your task manager to be sure there wasn't an errant instance of it running already? - Rebooted and ran both executables, and the batch file, with nothing else running. System resources had 94% available. Each perfomed illegal operations. Checked task manager after each fault, and nothing else was running before the next attempt.

Copied the muon folder to a WinXP machine, and executed muon1.exe. That was running in task manager. I killed the process and tried muon1_background.exe. That caused a fault, as did muon1_cmdline.bat. Tried muon1.exe again, and it also caused the same fault. Rebooted and tried muon1.exe again, which did not cause a fault, but also was not running in task manager.

hmmm. That's too weird.

I have two machines running Win98SE - both run background without a hitch. I have heard of a couple of folks who couldn't make it work under 98. :( You may be one of 'em.

As to running muon1.exe - I'd not use it. It's really not all that cool... but DOES cause problems with some machines. I stick to only background or cmdline.

It's also possible that running muon1.exe (graphical version) hoses the ability to run either of the other two when done without a re-boot.

If all else fails... there is also a screensaver version....

Hey Ornery...this is some tight spot ur putting me in...:) While I wait to hear if the other guys has some answers, maybe you should download the file again zip or rar, maybe a different one that the one you downloaded first...it's a long shot, but maybe a corrupt file...

I'll stay in touch! :D

I used the winrar file and it went fine once I figured out how to use everything with PMs from DanC. Basically I just opened the Winrar file with of course Winrar and exe the background version, but then it gave a No user specified error. So I exe the graphical version and entered [TA]Mastertech01 and then closed the graphical version. This then created a user text file. Then Dan let me know I cant run two instances with HT because that will cause corruption of the results, and he instructed me to edit the config.txt file to 2 threads instead. Of course shut down the errant running processes and restart background.exe and it will automatically run 2 threads at 100 percent utilization approx. Each time you modify or make changes winrar will ask if you want to edit the files and I just said yes to everything and its running great so far. This is with Win2K OS

Already downloaded the file again. Same result. Like I said, I had no luck on the WinXP machine either. I'll try that RAR file now, and see if it works any better...

Yeah, you can also manually create user.txt file and just type your name in it, with [TA] in front. :D

For easy setup, follow these steps:

1) download this file.
2) unzip it to C:\muon (note: if using Winzip make sure "use folder names" is checked or the program won't work.
3) in the C:\muon folder make a new txt document called user.txt
4) open the user.txt file and enter into it "[TA]Username" without the quotes, replacing Username with your nick, and save it
5) (Optional, for P4 users with HT): Open c:\muon\config.txt and change the line reading: "Threads: 1" to "Threads: 2"
6) If you want something displayed, run the muon1_cmdlin.exe file, if you don't run the muon1_background.exe file

That's it.

BTW, the linked page did a very description job on what to do, but I just did the cliffnotes for the people that wouldn't want to scan through that page to get to what they want.

Guess what? The RAR version is working fine. It's got a 'Lattices' directory that the zip file didn't.

For that winxp machine you might also want to try the service install from soni found here

It's very easy to setup, and it works great...:D

The zip has the lattices directory.

Here's my guess of what happened:

Downloaded the zip file.
Whatever utility you used to extract the files didn't keep the same directory stucture (winzip is infamous for this if you just drag and drop the files out of it, instead of using the "extract" button with the "keep file structure" checked.

So the files were extracted, but all into the muon folder (some were supposed to be in the lattices subfolder, and the program couldn't find those files and program error.

Am I close?

One thing that I found causes an illegal operation is when the files in the muon directory is read only!...So check that it's not. :D

I'm not yanking your chain....its in there, I just downloaded it again and made sure.

What progam are you using to view the zip file? Use the program you used to extract the rar file on the zip file and it should see it.
For example: I just opened the zip with winzip, and it didn't show the subfolder. But it could still be extracted with the extract button.
