Yeah, your basic point is correct. I just had to laugh at those numbers.

Heck, there were a number of households that didn't even have a TV back then.

But a lot of people watched the nightly news, and at best there were 3 choices: ABC, NBC and CBS. And for those of us who didn't live in a big metropolitan area we were lucky to get 2 of those when the weather was good. Because of channel availability, we usually watched Cronkite. Morrow must have been on a channel we didn't get. I'm familiar with name/fame, but I don't recall watching him.

Fern
You wouldn't have seen Murrow, he left the anchor desk in the fifties. Cronkite was his eventual replacement, but there was someone (or someones) between them.

And on NBC was Huntley & Brinkley. Cronkite replaced Dennis Edwards. There was no ABC TV at that time.

I think the succession was Murrow > some dudes > Cronkite > Rather.

an amazing record, there. Shame what happened to Rather, as he really is the last TV journalist that this country produced. He has his own show, though, with a teeny audience. But it's better than just about anything else that calls itself news.

These days, I can only watch Newshour.

Not competing with Murrow, but certainly with Cronkite. I remember ABC in particular because it broadcast more cartoons in the early sixties, not to mention such favorites as Bewitched and The Adams Family.

I do not think I could watch Dan "Fake but accurate" Rather if I were getting paid.

one fuck up with bad sourcing. :\

Still more trustable than anything from the rightwing echosphere.

Funny how liberals have to be perfect to have any credibility, but righties can be wrong about everything but still are credible.
They will greet us as saviors, the war will be paid for with oil, surpluses as far as the eye can see, tax cuts pay for themselves, ownership society, marijuana is evil, etc..

I'm not sure what you mean, but Cronkite and ABC both aired the same year - 1962.

I don't know if we even had a TV in '62 (I don't think so). We had one in '63 though, I remember hearing the "I had a dream" speech on the nightly news.

Mighty Mouse, Bitch!

I remember crying hard when JFK was buried. They preempted Mighty Mouse to show the funeral. My mom said don't worry it will be on next Saturday. I cried even harder, that was, like, a year away in 'little kid time'.

BW claimed to have spent 2 harrowing days in the desert after the choppers landed. I saw at least one soldier call BS on that. He claimed BW was picked up about 30 minutes later and choppered back.

Worse, reports were that BW's chopper was nowhere near the one hit by the RPG etc. BW was said to have been in a different convoy.

As far as the 'lie' about this story, probably best to wait a bit to see ultimately turns up.
------------------------

I'm now thinking BW is history. Two reasons:

1. I've heard reports his producers knew this story is BS and have previously told him to stop repeating it. Yet he continued on multiple occasions.

2. Media firestorm. Now everyone is looking into his past. There are bound to be times that even though he was truthful, he won't be able to prove it. The accusations will pile up. If this circus continues his cred will be destroyed. At some level it doesn't matter if he lied, or he's simply delusional: The result is the same; he can't be trusted.

No respect for somebody who lies about being in battle, when we have many men and women who defend our country and do nor brag about it!!

Yep, I remember Mighty Mouse, and Bugs Bunny. ABC was a kid's best friend.

Guess again. It was Hillary... several times.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2008/03/26/us-usa-politics-clinton-idUSN2540811420080326

In a speech in Washington on March 17 Clinton said of the Bosnia trip: "I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."

She also told CNN last week: "There was no greeting ceremony and we were basically told to run to our cars. Now that is what happened."
I don't like Hillary either, but I can see how hers could be a simple misunderstanding:
Hillary: "Where's the welcoming committee?"
Liaison: "Trust me: You don't want one. Enemy snipers could be anywhere and you don't want to stand out. In fact, I suggest you spend as little time out in the open as possible and rush to your car."
Hillary: "Oh my God!"

You know: It's just like Lt. Dan telling Forrest Gump not to salute. Heck, my imaginary liaison who probably exists could have even misspoke saying something like "enemy snipers are everywhere" without adding "...maybe even here."

I hate Hillary. I fundamentally disagree with her party's politics. I hate NBC. ...but even I can see how this may not exactly have been an intentional lie. She just didn't understand what they were telling her about what to expect. Brian Williams may simply not have understood how far ahead the other chopper was or someone near him sensationalized the danger and pointed to that chopper. What he said later was clearly lying and not simply misunderstanding what he was told about the situation.

You need to search out the video of that to truly see the humor in her claim. There's a young girl walking ahead of them. Walking. Hard for me to imagine honestly confusing "we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base" and "we walked behind a darling ten year old girl", but YMMV.

I posted it earlier.

Don't even bother. He just made up a 3 paragraph excuse for her and couldn't take 5 seconds to look for the truth.

These people want to be lied to. They like it, they need it.

And you didn't even read my post because you missed that I hate everything about her. I was just saying that it is very likely that she mistakenly took something out of context and then, deliberately or not, started perverting smaller details over time.

I haven't seen the video. I suspect she hadn't seen it when making her claims. ;)

I'm more interested in his Katrina stories. There seem to be a few whoppers told about things he would not have seen. Does it rise to the level of absolute condemnation? I'll reserve judgement on that, although when a major outlet uses people with a track record of willful inaccuracy their organization becomes suspect. That's on NBC and him.
That was par for the course. I worked with a man whose son was in Mississippi on the beach during Katrina, had to leap out his second story window and wade through waist-deep water in the middle of the hurricane because he foolishly threw a hurricane party during a hurricane that destroyed his apartment building. One thing that really frosted his oats was the news crews asserting that no one there had had any food, blankets or clean water when in fact the newsies had to carefully set up to avoid getting Red Cross and Salvation Army relief stations in their shots. Within two blocks of his apartment building (in which he stayed as he was recovering his stuff, even though it was condemned, because hotel rooms were all over-booked with reporters and aide workers) he had three different relief stations serving hot food, and the newsies were all reporting that the people were receiving no help whatsoever. It is not a profession that values integrity and honesty.

I posted it earlier.

I had missed that - I very seldom watch linked videos since they are so much slower than text. It is an awesome report though, thanks.

Just heard her explanation for that on the radio yesterday while driving. She dismissed her embellishment as a result of her being very tired. Now, if you've ever been around an alcoholic or a drug addict and had to listen to some of the excuses they come up with, you'd immediately recognize you were hearing one of those excuses.

Oh and a pic has surfaced from Katrina that partially exonerates Williams.

No. I simply said "I can see how..." Nothing wrong with that. I'm not sure what makes you think I corrected anyone and I never said I was authoritative. werepossum responded appropriately, inviting me to see the video I hadn't seen. You, however, were wrongly reactionary because you thought I was arguing for the other side (couldn't be further from the truth) and so you failed to even read my post while admonishing me for not having read yours yet. Others have said they missed yours. I'm STILL tediously looking for it (posting from my phone). I wasn't responding to you and I had to get back to work when I made the first post, so boo-hoo.

Thanks, werepossum.
