LOL at all the drama over a simple SD card slot. Digital cameras must drive some people mad.

Isn't it about time to revisit the exaggerated horrors of having a removable battery? :D

You can cry and whine all you want. Fact is they don't want to spend millions to implement SD card and they are over charging idiots for additional internal storage.

I really dont think its cost at all, I think its at Googles request. In the same way that they want to get rid of physical buttons and the menu button.
Which OEM ignores those requests? The same one that puts the SDcard slot in.
Samsung are big enough to hold out against Google and do their own thing.

You are beating yourself up for an SD card slot when there are simple work around. Very ironic. Perhaps you will get it some day.

Theres no need for a simple work around. We can just buy a phone with an SDcard slot. They really aren't going away for the foreseeable future no matter what Google or reviewers want.

You should see the user reactions in their official commentary over the AT site. Pure ownage gold.

Either Apple wrote them a check or they are writing for this mainstream phone users like them who gets phones mailed to them free to play with every month or so.

I think you are right in general, but I was unclear, I meant in cell phones specifically. Sorry for the confusion.

And the reason I ask is that I've seen some very strongly worded comments about not buying a phone without an SD Card in it. I am just curious.

I think the market is too large and non-phone devices use MicroSD. They will remain for sale for a long time I think.

I doubt that. Sd cards haven't really advanced that quickly in the past several years, prices have gone down. But performance and capacity have remained in the same area. You'll likely just see the slow decline of sd card slots in devices in the next 2-5 years. I could be wrong but i haven't even heard of anyone making a new faster standard that gives greater capacity, which leads me to think it isn't going to stick around too long. Niche devices still might have them though.

Just my 2 cents I too would much rather have the option of having a Microsd card.

Since when is less option/flexibility good for a device? Sounds too much like an Iphone :)

Here is an Idea place the SD CARD reader on the replaceable battery (MIND BLOWN :))

Peace

having sd cards allows you to buy the cheapest version and have extra storage, why the hell wouldnt you do this. manufacturer's won't be putting out 128GB phones any time soon, and if they do, they will be charging an extra $200 for it. it makes me suspect that klug is supporting manufacturer cost cutting / padding their bottom line at the expense of consumers.

their rebuttal on anandtech is also pretty weak. as many have said it before, sony was able to put out a phone that was sexy, had a sd card slot and was waterproof. it didnt seem to have any design drawbacks to me.

because you shouldn't have to settle for shitty sd card performance when internal memory is faster and cheap. If oems started offering 64gb standard with no SD card, would you rather have that or a 16gb with sd card slot? Id take 64gb internal over 16gb and microsd any day even though technically you could get more storage potential from the sd card

Dustin's comment on the article is right on the money.

Think we'll see any future Dustin articles on anandtech?

what do you define as "shitty"? My SD card on my S4 handles pictures, movies, apps just fine. I never once complained about the SD card on my phone being slow. but I do have a fast class 10 64GB one.

So how cheap is it to go from a 32GB iPhone to a 64GB iPhone?

How cheap is it to go from a 32GB HTC One to a 64GB HTC One?

If those phones offered uSD slot how much would it cost to add 32GB of storage?

How does having the slot make you settle? Last I checked, it gave you the option to settle...

Again with the shitty card performance. It doesnt exist. The cards perform just fine.

I'll take 64gb on board plus an SDcard thanks. Any reason why you didn't include that choice?

I don't get this air of superiority from these people. It is just an sd card, and is useful for photos, videos, and other media. Is this how he thinks of his readers? The great unwashed masses that either can't afford the best, or don't think it is worth the money?

I don't get why it's such a big deal whether the staff supports SD cards or not. But here we are, 11 pages in.

It's a discussion board, there's a discussion going on. The internet is not just for porn and LOLcats.

I mean we could just not care about their opinions and ignore them but as they are a review site they probably don't want that.

I don't care how cheap it is for the end user. That's on the OEM, the cost of the memory itself is small, its just greedy OEMs upcharge far more than is reasonable.

Context.

The debate itself (merits of SD cards in phones) was not the point of my post. I certainly don't feel like the objectivity of their reviews has been compromised in the least. People are basically throwing a fit because staff members' preferences don't line up with their own. It's ridiculous.

I used to be on the SD card side. Then I got a phone with more storage baked in. With my usage, all that happens with more storage is that more junk is kept. So, I actually don't care for SD cards anymore and just buy phones that have enough storage for my needs.

Other people are not like me. I don't think they're wrong. This discussion is way too heated for what it is.

They certainly don't seem objective in their approach to sdcards.

You can just ignore the heated bits, that's what I'm trying to do. There's a valid discussion to be had.

Maybe someone with more time than me should try to lay out the arguments on each side as the same points keep being brought up and addressed over and over. This is usually a reason why Internet discussions degenerate so badly.
