because the odds on getting that close again are low. not to mention he is very old for a QB.

he has been considering retirement for the last few years. this is a good year to do it.

If he won next year he wouldn't be much older than Elway was.

According to a voicemail left with espn's Chris Mortenson by Favre, just as the story was breaking, Favre says its 'not about randy moss', and is about the overall mental wear and tear over 17 years of trying to be a champion, and the time put in to preparing for another season.

Favre says it has nothing to do with Moss, but he was recently rooting for the Pack to sign him, and his retiring now suggests that it did have to do not getting a player like Moss imo. Net net, if they actually had signed Moss, there's no way Favre would be retiring, and he'd probably be very excited about going into this season.

Not about Moss my ass. The story breaks the day Moss signs a contract with the Pats *and* moss' agent says he could have gone for more money...hmmm...where would that counter offer come from?

I believe it was about Moss, who decided that playing 1-2 seasons for the Packers, Favre retiring then having to deal with the ? of Rodgers wasn't a good enough proposition to being with Brady and having a good shot at being a champion in the next 3 years.

Favre had lots of weapons to throw to this season and the upcoming season. Are they as good as Moss? No. But chemistry counts for a lot.

I doubt very much it was about Moss. there was little doubt that moss was going to stay with the pats.

Looking at it from the other side of the coin...Favre and Moss talked about a week ago and it was reported Favre was willing to commit to an additional year beyond this year, to encourage Moss that it wouldn't be a 'one and done' partnership/contract. If the Pack signed Moss, would Favre then decide to retire? I don't think so, Favre is all about character...he wouldn't stiff arm Moss after having just signed a contract to catch passes from Favre. No doubt there was little chance the Pack would get Moss, but Favre wanted him the last couple years.

Maybe its fair to say he most likely was already going to retire, unless they got Moss.

I think that is a very fair assessment. And vice versa, Moss wasn't going to sign if Favre was going to retire.

Moss has no reason to go anywhere else at after the end of last season. More money makes no sense. He wants a ring. The Patriots are assuredly going to be contenders next season, and even if Favre did play another, and Moss signed to the Packers, the Patriots would still be bigger favroties I'm sure.

Greg Jennings is a poor man's Randy Moss imo. Not even poor, maybe upper middle class :p

EDIT: Oh wow, I thought Jennings was atleast 6'1 or so, but he's 5'11. Moss has 5 inches on him.

You know who's crying like a baby? Donald Driver.
Packers WR core is rock solid IMO. We'll see if it was the QB that made them though this season.

First of all it's about time, second - didn't he say the same thing last year? Then change his mind? What is it Brett - are you in or out? I say now maybe the Bears will have a chance lol

I don't think he ever outright said he was going to retire last year, just that he was going to really think about it.

Favre was actually recruited out of hs (by only one school, southern miss) as a db, and he started as a derelict partying qb, drafted by Atlanta in the 2nd round (when they pronounced his name Favor on draft day). He thru only 5 passes for atlanta, while 2 were returned for a touchdown. :Q Atlanta felt they had a steal by trading him for a 17th pick in the first round. Favre didn't even pass the physical after the trade, but Steve Marriuchi? (and someone else) saw something in him tho...how they saw it is anyones guess.

The problem is that their young QB is not a durable guy. Even though he's been on the bench for most of his career, he has still missed way, way more games than Favre. He's even been hurt in practice.

The guy will not last a season in the NFL without being injured. Even if he did, it's nearly guaranteed that he won't be as good as Favre.

They did at 1:45 pm today. Unfortunately he suffered a paper cut and will be out next season.

FINALLY. Sure he's still good but he's way out of his prime.

Such a stupid argument. He's still better than 50%+ of the starting QBs in the league

The average NFL player's career is approximately 3 years. Favre played for 17 years at a position where he's left wide open for shots and ultimately has the team's success or failure riding on his shoulders whether it is deserved or not.

I don't think I could question any non-punter/kicker player's decision to retire after 17 years.

How do you really judge the age of a QB? When kids on forums say he's old? When he starts getting injured a lot?

You have rookies out there that lack the durability to play more than a few games without being injured. On the other hand, you have guys like Brett Favre who play over 270 straight games.

As it stands now, you have a guy that in his 17th season hasn't missed a game due to injury, and you have a young QB who's been injured in practice and has already proven himself to be very injury prone.

Who do you really think is more likely to get injured next year? I can guarantee you it will be Rogers.
