finally got it working. i have no idea what i'm doing. always played red alert so besides the general idea(get resources to expand) i have no idea what units do what, buildings, etc. not even sure which race i want to learn. any one know of a nice full guide that starts from the ground up in sc2?

Eh just learn by doing, play 2v2's on the twilight fortress map, people hardly ever seem to rush on that map for some reason. Maybe have a look at your ally and check out what he is doing. I have found protoss to be the simplest race to learn, closely followed by terran, zerg is a bit tougher.

Does anyone know of a way to make zerg larvae function like they did in the original starcraft?

i.e. selecting 12 larvae and clicking hydralisk morphs 12 hydralisks? I have to click 12 times if i want 12 hydras in sc2, any way around this? a key i can hold down or something?

I think you can just hold down the h key.

If you want to learn, don't play any 2v2s. 1v1s clearly show your weaknesses and do not allow you to blame the partner, even subconsciously. Plus the logic just doesn't work the same in 2v2s. For instance, you can have one player go full defense (losing move in 1v1) and one teching straight to game-winning high tech units (losing move in 1v1).

FFAs you might want to play for a little bit to get the hang of macroing up to a large endgame army and facing other endgame units. But they also play very differently from 1v1, you have to play very greedy and passive. Outcomes even more random than random 2v2s.

Is there a way to play against improved AI in online mode? My friend and I want to play 2v2 against somewhat difficult computers.

Nope, not in beta. They want to encourage people to play live games against human opponents in order to accomplish the goal of testing the balance.

Are there still people who haven't made it into the beta yet?

Probably. It's going to suck when they shutoff the beta test though. I've really enjoyed my time playing. Good thing I have a 4 day weekend before they shut off the beta for a while. I think I'll dub it SC2 weekend :).

FINALLY made it out of Copper Solo, it only took 56 games.

I lost my first 5 placement matches because I was brand new to RTS, I've also never played Starcraft I so pretty much everything was brand new. After I figured out some semblance of what to do it took a TON of games to get moved up.

After starting off at something like 4-11 I was moved up at 33-23. My opponent was "Favored" nearly 80% of the time and almost everyone was in Bronze or Silver. I think only maybe 5 games were against other people in Copper. At one point I went on an 8 game win streak completely against "Favored" opponents and that still wasn't enough. I had to actually climb the ladder starting from 1000 points until I was rank 1 (1550~), and then win 3 consecutive matches against Bronze/Silver players.

Meanwhile I also started in Copper in 2v2 and moved up to Bronze after losing a game.

For those of you that have moved up, did it require you to be rank #1?

you don't have to be rank 1. you just have to be high up in your league (division doesn't matter.)

I just got an invite tonight.

Wo0o0o0t!

Haha. Enjoy 11 days of beta!

When I moved up from bronze to silver it only took me around 10 games. Most of which I won against favored people. My placement matches were against a lot of gold ranked people, so even though I went 2-3 I was obviously given some credit. Was barely in the top 10 when I was moved up.

Yeah, I read about that. But don't worry, I'll be having fun! There's also going to be another beta according to everything that I read. I'm going to get my ass kicked in every match since I'm sure they'll be matching me with tons of more experienced players.

Wow. This is not a forgiving game to newbies to SC.

I've heard SC2 is very newbie friendly compared to SC1.

But I wouldn't know, I didn't play 1.

[edit] If you want, I can help you out with some of the basic stuff I had to figure out on my own.

I'll take any help I can get. I went 2 and 0 from the start and have lost the last 4 matches. It's interesting to play a game like this in MP. It's actually turning out to be more "twitch" than most shooters I've played.

2-0 is WAY better than my start (0-5).

PM me your SC2 handle.

Wow, this rating system is interesting.

I just fought this rank #3 Silver Zerg player that seemed like he should have been in Copper. He never even attempted to expand and just tried to sit in his base and tech to air. I scanned him earlier and saw him getting air, so on his first attack on my base he only killed 1 SCV because I had marines and vikings ready. He then still sits inside his base and proceeds to produce more of the exact same units.

By now I have complete map control (and an expo) and he's pretty much lost, yet he's still inside of his base cranking away at those air units. No scouting, no attempt at an expo, and completely tunnel visioned.

I know this is still the beta and this is not completely representative of all silver players but he has nearly 200 games so you'd think by now his rating would be reasonably accurate.

this is my first time playing SC, played 2 games last night i thankfully played a person as bad me and I ended up being 1-1 after those games, one thing I learned is that I must construct additional pylons.

Fuck it. I think I'm done. I have neither the time nor the patience to sit and watch youtube videos and to study fucking build orders to get "good" at this game. It really requires no skill. You just have to study what to build and when. Boring. No thanks.
