not very keen on the fact that the barracks(and other unit builders) you can only do one of the two upgrades. so if i choose to build the upgrade on the barracks that allows two units to be made i can only build marines out of that or am i missing something? lame.

Yes, but 1) it allows you to get marines/hellions/medivacs/vikings at double the rate from a single facility, 2) you can build a tech lab with a barracks, lift it off, then build the factory next to the tech lab and already have the upgraded building. or, you can quickly go from MM to vikings/tanks or something if you need to.

Also, for ideal unit production you'll want at least two of whatever you're producing (for Terran, usually at least two, maybe three barracks for MM).

i'm confused. how can you get double anything besides marines? and to put a factory on a tech lab do you just set it on top of it?

What race do you play? Just build early static defenses/block and most likely you'll be able to survive a rush.

i'm starting out as terran because it's the easiest to see as far as 'oh, that's a tank'. static defense? like a bunkers? i'm coming from a CNC background... tesla coils, flame throwers, etc. don't see anything other than a shitty bunker as far as defense goes..

i've been looking for a site for a complete noob like me to show build trees, all about the structures/units and haven't had much luck.

Early game rushing is an integral part of starcraft. The key is walling off your ramp. Build your first supply depot and bunker on the ramp to stop anyone from getting into your base.

Also, I would argue that terran is probably one of the harder races at the moment. Personally I think its much more micro intensive than the other two races.

you want micro intensive, you can play zerg where you have to constantly micro the queen's spawn larva... :p

protoss seems to be the "easiest" in terms of macro strategy, but the problem is - you really need to know how to handle resource management and unit counters/scouting, as protoss early units pretty much suck at this point in the game. They get owned by standard Z/T earlies - MM, roach/ling. Protoss' strong point is in Immortals/Colossi, which, especially as a combination, really counters a LOT of units and pushes. a couple problems, though - 1) immortals/colossi are expensive, and require good management to ensure that you don't lose one in some stupid manner, and 2) are easily countered by a hard air offense, which you can protect against by scouting and stalkers.

so how do you get a factory that can make 2 siege tanks at once?

you can't. siege tanks require a tech lab, which only allows for 1unit at a time.

reactors let you build 2 basic units at the same time.

barracks: 2 marines
factory: 2 hellions
starport: 2 vikings/medivacs

I feel your pain. The teamliquid wiki has some really useful info on how to build up offenses and defenses for traditional opening moves. They have tons of good info on there.

an early "rush" has a couple objectives - to keep you on your toes, and to force you to put resources into early defense (static defenses, early units) instead of investing in a quick tech. Depending on how successful the rush/harass is, it can put you on the defensive, allowing your opponent to be more aggressive and take map control/expansions. On a map like, say, Lost Temple, if your opponent does a successful early harass, disrupts your early production, and locks you into your base+expansion, he has free reign over the rest of the entire map, as long as he has good scouting skills to ensure you don't leave your base or something. This is why it's so critical to have scouts and vision over a large portion of the map (and why Xel'Naga towers are usually so hotly contested) - for early warnings of an attack, or a rush.

I think the game shows all the tech tree layout and unit info if you go to the help screen. It's f12 button during gameplay or the help icon on menu screen.

Not being in the US, I can't pre-order this game for a beta key and don't have access to my old Warcraft & Starcraft CDs to enter the lottery on Battle.net.

That being said, I'd like to try the beta out (for a few days, at least) as it looks like a worthy successor to my favourite game.

Anyone have a spare beta key, or know of a good resource for getting one?

bnet...

i never lagged or disc, and now i do it every so often on the new patch. but they must of did some changes cause now its just laggy but i dont really get disc.

i was thinking that some pc's can't handle the extra units in a 4v4 battle.
and i do get disco's. not me personally, but usually 2-3 people drop in 4v4's.
