OK, I just want to watch a few replays to see if my PC can handle it at all (I'd love to postpone an upgrade). I downloaded the client and looked at this guide on how to watch replays, but since the patch was put out it kept trying to download the patch (over and over) and failed. At the bottom of the page people say to put the original files back in so I did so. I can get into the game but how do I watch replays? It wants me to log on (which I can't)...

Any thoughts? How do you guys do it?

1) download the client
2) let it patch
3) then follow the steps in the guide to enable replays

Thats how I was able to do it anyway.

When was the last time you watched 'em? I'm wondering if a new patch is causing my issues.

I installed the client for the first time this morning, let it patch and booted it up. Then I exited and followed the steps and I still had the issues.

Get version 3 of the AI here:

http://botdev.org/doku.php

Much improved, but still not quite a complete challenge.

Definately! It actually attacks now heh, i dont know if its that file or the map that dictates the amount of AI's but i did a 3v1 against 3 of these and it was more challenging than before. Still a pushover, but there was some shooting and retaliation this time :)

How do you get the AI? I downloaded the patch, used Lazylauncher to open and selected a map. There's no AI in the game though.

Hmmm you are right, I just tried watching a replay and it doesn't work anymore. I got the sandbox and then the AI 3.0, too, so that may be why replays don't work anymore for me.

So, if we download the beta client, even those that aren't in the beta can play against the AI, right?

so are people coding AI into the game, or is this stuff that's been cracked and "unlocked" from the beta?

I'm not sure about it; been playing but I don't know if I like the faster paced gameplay. It seems like alot of the starter units get kicked to the curb because it's so easy to tech.

Most games ive played end up air vs air within 10 minutes.

Thats interesting. I've had quite the opposite experience, in that people usually hang on to the tier 1 units a lot longer than they probably should, and air units aren't really that common, unless you're talking about medivacs.

So do the different versions of the AI such as those really affect the quality of the AI in maps with built in AI? (I'm using these - http://www.nibbits.com/sc2/maps/). It doesn't really seem right. Not sure if I'm doing this quite right.

Its supposed to, but theyre all variations on the original "very easy" AI that is in the demo, there wont be a proper challenging AI until SC II is released.

question for those of you lucky enough to get into the beta.

i'd like to get my gf into sc2 but obviously we don't have the beta. she's never played sc1 before and she's not much of a gamer period.

is it worth it to prime her up with sc1 while waiting for sc2 or is the game much more different, which would just confuse her more?

A few minor differences, methinks she'll be fine going either route. She'll be "better" at SC2 if she has some SC1 background I'm sure.

It'll help somewhat. Playing Warcraft 3 will help alot more IMO. The game feels like a WarCraft 3 with no heroes and has a faster pace. Most of my games don't last more than 10 minutes.

No. Getting her to play SC1 would be way better. WC3 is a lot different: focuses more on micro, has RPG elements, and heavy emphasis on heroes.

SC2 has a good amount of micro involved. My games don't end up using 50+ units in multiple battles, but a shitload of hit and run tactics with decisive units. The flow of the gameplay in War3 is very similar to SC2. The only difference is the content. SC1 and SC2 might have the similar contents but the flow of both games are very different.

Play War3 if you want to get an overall feel of SC2. Play SC1 if you want to learn about the units and specific aspects of the gameplay.

I've been having a fair bit of fun playing the crappy AI. At least I'm getting a chance to learn the units and get a feel for the speed of the game. I'm definitely teching far more than I would be able to in a real game, though.

Terran is pretty fun. I've been doing Medivacs/Marines/Vikings, pretty neat because of the versatility of the vikings. Solid against air and good meatshields for the marines vs ground. The Orbital Command thing is also rather awesome.

Protoss is cool too. The zealots are still very good, especially once you tech to the intercept thing. A few games I tried zealots/mothership/colossi/void rays, pretty fun.

I'm not a big fan of the music in SC2...SC1 was better.

The longest legit (i.e., no floating a building in a corner for 3 hours) game I've played or seen on a replay is 47 minutes. 90% of the games I've played are under 20 minutes, with the majority being 10-15. Its a very quick pace. Good players can tech to tier 2 units in ~5 minutes and have a serious attack incoming by 7. Hell, a common zerg tactic right now is to build a second hatchery before a spawning pool, which basically forces a rush from the opponent. Otherwise the zerg player's economy explodes and you get overrun. It takes some getting used to but I like it.

Is there a way to try to get into this beta still? I've been watching videos on youtube and have to admit, it looks like a ton of fun!
