Mutas are an easy counter, you turtle up with missle turrets and go for thors if you think theyre gonna spam them. Thors wreck mutas thanks to the new splash to air :(

I'm checking on a daily basis now, hoping that I'll get in. Yet another login of disappointment for me :(.

Just for reference how will my rig do at 1920x1080?

E7400
8GB RAM
Radeon 4870 512MB

You'll be fine, I'm running 1024x768 pretty smooth with all the settings off.

AMD XP 2500+
2GB RAM
Radeon 9600 Pro

:p :D

A thor alone is a juicy target for mutas once there are enough of them. It's also typically inconvenient to manufacture and slow to respond on the other side of the base.

A solid defense is about three well-placed turrets per command center. Hi-sec auto tracking upgrade helps a lot. Maybe not a pro move, but I like to research it. Outside the base you want marines with stim/medivac/maybe combat shield vs mutalisks. Reinforce with a few viking and micro to keep them outside muta range.

Vs extreme amounts of muta you'd really want a hunter seeker missile, but it's more of a superweapon than a mere "counter", and the cost and dev time reflects that.

As already stated here, if you know your opponent is going mutas, you need to really turtle your base up. As also mentioned, thors while effective against mutas, aren't particularly reliable because they move really slow, mutas can run circles around you. In addition, mutas can fly where your thors cant.

Do NOT build ONLY missile turrets in your base. I tend to build at least 2 bunkers in addition to at least 3-4 turrets. And build them in such a way they can attack anything attacking my SCVs. Otherwise you're going to get owned by a group of zerglings.

From the beginning, build in such a way to prepare for a zergling rush. Plan to have at least 1-2 marines out already by the time zerglings get to you. Then have your SCV's somewhat defend your marines. At least 4-5 SCV's easily keep the zerglings from massing around your marines and owning them. Then build hellions and harrass the hell out of him while you tech up. Properly microed hellions will absolutely OWN zerglings. And then proceed to work on his harvesters to minimize the effectiveness of zerg early expansion.

Once he has muta's you should at least have a few vikings. While you cannot meet him in open ground effectively, the vikings are more than enough to chase him out of your well defended base/expansion. Slowly build up a force of vikings and some marines with 2-3 ravens. I try to time it so that by the time I'm done building ravens, I can start building a few battle battlecruisers otherwise build banshees. You need air that can attack ground to avoid having to land the vikings while he still has mutas. Once I have a good set of units I go towards his expansion or base and set up a few point defense drones outside it, then attack the base to draw him out. Retreat to the drones and proceed to own him while his force does very minimal damage to you.

You have to stay mobile when playing against mutas, and keep bases defended to keep the mutas busy while you reply with your forces.

You shouldn't be building that many missle turrets. 2 at the mineral line is enough. At most, get 3(one to cover buildings; maybe 4 if they have a huge force that are dancing around your base. You definitely don't want to spam bunkers in your base. One or two at your natural's choke if you're teching or expanding while vulernable that you can salvage once your army is comfortable and maybe some temporary ones around the map for short term control. To stop a zergling rush, just wall off your base; if you're worried about a baneling break use the double rax or rax/factory wall to stop them. Static defense isn't there to stop large attacks it's there to repel harrassment and buy time for your army to get back.

lost my first 2 placement games, won the 3rd.

Damn, I take it I'm not playing placement games against other people who just started playing. Because they look like they know exactly what they were doing and knew all the units. oh well, it is a learning curve.

There was a complete Bnet wipe recently. Everyone's account was deleted and everything was restarted as new. I was in Silver with over 80 games played before the wipe and swept all 5 of my placement games going 5-0.

I wouldn't say this as a ladder reset as you see in previous Blizzard games, it was more like an Battle.net reset.

wahoo! i got in the beta a couple of weeks ago and played a few games and yup my addiction is still there :)

For those waiting ... I know how it feels so here's the deal .... I'm willing to "accidentally" send you my login acct. so you can guys can check it out, we can alternate every 2-3days, or something like that ... why? cause this how AT rolls! :)

To avoid a mass flood of PMs, I'm limiting this to the older members on the board ... gold and above? no silly games or riddles (although I'm tempted) but yeah, reply to the thread and send me a PM. let's spread the love!

It's ok. I usually think I'm pretty good playing against my friends...then I get on B-net and some 11 year old korean kid is tea-bagging my last SCV like 5 minutes into the game.

*sigh*

I can't wait for the full version can come out so I can host comp-stomps LOL!

its not that as much as I wasn't sure what the placement games were. For some reason I thought I would be playing against other people who just started, but that isn't the case.

They pit you against various rated people to see how good you are. But I just got it and don't know any of the new units yet, so obviously I'm going to suck.

Just takes time, at one point I was damn good at SC one in ladder. But I played all the time and was in college, lol. No chance I will ever be that good at SC2.

they placed me with a copper ranked yesterday, i'm currently at silver but probably end up at gold soon, rank 24 on 2v2 unranked on 1v1. race terran currently, played less then 20 games so far. so still learning the units and counters

anyways the copper dude tried to cheese me with a early hidden pylon in the far corner of my base on scrap station?. warped in two spider thingy? but i easily knocked it out with a 5 marines and two helions. by the end of that attack i had successfully started mining my new expansion and pumped two banshee to go harass his eco. Pretty much gg after that since i kept on sending banshee over and his spider thingys were to weak to kill it.

I rose to 2nd in silver league today after playing about 70 games after reset, about 30 before reset. Wonder what it takes to be promoted to gold. I'm playing random so I'm often pretty clueless, especially playing with toss and zerg, but they seem easier than terran so it balances out.

Let's have some match stories!

Today I got crushed as toss by a fast thor drop cheese. I expanded due to cross positions, made stalkers, scouted w/observer, even made an immortal, but then just didn't register the meaning of the armory and didn't look at their base on the crucial moment when the thor finished and was loaded on medivac. To add insult to injury, the immortal/stalker AI spontaneously combusted next to the mineral patches. They just would not advance, and medivac/thor consequently got clean away. Troops in SC2 just do not move as responsively as in Brood War.

Another spot where the pathfinding has pissed me off several times is when I build supply/techlab on top of where I had a barracks rally point, and the retarded barracks then spawns troops on the entirely other side instead of closest possible empty space.

My one win, I had harassed a guy and destroyed all his expansions, he didn't have money left, so attacked with what he had left, and looked like he may win. He had about 6 carriers left and I had about 2 BC(terran) but more anti air queued up.

But he ran out of intercepters and didnt' have money to buy more so he was left with 4 carriers sitting doing nothing and gg after that.

I really should have destroyed him, but like I said, I'm way off my game so I made plenty of mistakes as well.

I just got an invite today.
I registered with my Core2Duo, 2gb laptop with Intel 945 Graphics. :D

I figured most gamers who registered had awesome machines, so using a crap machine would give me a better chance of getting in. Now... I wonder if I can install it on my main good machine or if it will only work on the laptop I registered it with.
I doubt it binds it to the machine to registered with.

I'm on a roll today.

Last match was an epic tvz which I should have lost after I failed to know an answer to ling-bane-hydra, but zerg dallied with his attack which would have killed me. This left me just enough time to gather all my remaining troops into two medivacs and drop his base. His army went to wipe my base, so I returned the favor by wiping his hatcheries and drones while losing all my forces to his freshly spawning troops. His hydras finally returned and I whisked a dropship full of scv to an island at the last second - hydras shot it to 20hp. I could afford a new command center on the island. He had one more hatchery at an expansion, but couldn't afford a drone and had no ventral sacs to come kill me. :D

edit: ye gods, I checked profile - that zerg was 15th in gold league and playing his main race

My T5300 (1.73GHz), 2GB RAM, Intel 945 Graphics laptop runs the game on the lowest settings, but I only get about 3fps in battles.

I do not recommend this game for crappy machines :)

I'll try it out on my desktop later.
