Boycott BP? Why?

Am I wrong about this? Boycotting BP isn't going to affect the corporation much. It might sting a little bit, but it won't really hurt. They already know they screwed up and it's going to cost them billions. WHAT IT WILL HURT is the small business owners that have licensed their brand to open up gas stations and sell their oil. They didn't do anything wrong. They had nothing to do with the spill.

Shouldn't we let the government punish the corporation directly?

Or am I missing something. It seems like the old saying "don't shoot the messenger" applies here.

because they keep dragging their ass about cleaning their fuck-up.

they should have manned up and took care of it asap rather than try to blame other companies. now, lives have been ruined, jobs have been lost, careers have been destroyed, countless wildlife has been irreversibly affected, etc.

fuck bp. i'd rather pay a few cents more at the pump per gallon someplace else.

I boycott companies not to "make a difference" but because it makes me feel better. Will Intel ever notice that I refuse to buy their chips due to their shady practices? Hell no, but it makes me feel just a tiny bit better about myself.

I think your reasoning is sensible. Everyone associated with the BP name is going to pay. I just hope the govt. charges them up the @ss for this.

my gf said the same thing today... she was like "why is our government not stepping up to the plate for these slow bitches at bp and then just sending them the bill once it's all done?"

i don't think it quite works like that... otherwise i'm sure we would have done it.

We must trust that these huge corporations really do have our best interests at heart and cut them some slack. Look at how great the insurance industry is in this country! Everyone is covered and insurance costs are the lowest in the world and everyone has excellent healthcare.

Obama is pretending the government is in charge, but they are only claiming to be on top of things and accountable for action. Sounds more like he's trying to distance himself from the same type of criticism the Bush admin got for their inadequate katrina response.

It's caught everyone off guard tho, and BP is probably calling the shots more than anyone since they are the experts.

If you don't buy oil from BP, they'll just sell it to another oil company, who will then sell it to you. Meanwhile both of them are laughing all the way to the bank.

And BP stations are franchised, so you're probably hurting the small business owners and local economy more than anything else.

If people really want to make a difference, you need to use less oil, not buy it elsewhere.

I'm not going to shop at BP on moral grounds. I know it won't affect their bottom line, but I'll still stick to my principles.

This is kind of how I see it.

I read an article where people are trying to organize mass boycotts in Florida, yet BP doesn't own a single gas station in Florida. The BP's are simply licensed gas stations and out of hundreds of products (soda, food, etc.) their only real BP product is the gas. So by boycotting BP gas, you're barely hurting them at all, yet stabbing the small business owner in the heart. Seems totally ignorant. People say it makes them feel better, yet they aren't even considering what they are actually doing and the reality of the situation.

There were several failsafes that didn't work on the rig, they didn't work because BP had wanted to move the rig 1.5 months earlier and it was costing them $500K/day to finish up the well they were on.

Deep water drilling is fairly new, and the technology to deal with a mess like this complicated.

The sad thing is that while deep water drilling is a sophisticated mess, shallow water drilling is simple as dirt with little risk.

Unfortunately no one gives a shit about the difference and is screaming about how we need to stop all off shore drilling.

And anyone who thinks we're moving away from oil as a major source of energy on the planet any time soon is delusional.

boycott will only be effective if it will have a financial impact on the company. I prefer giving a huge fine, reimbursements for the clean up, and payment for all the damages. I bet that would hugely impact their finances.

Why isn't Obama getting blamed for the slow response? If GWB were still in office the lefties would be going nuts.

If a boycott makes you feel all warm and fuzzy go for it. We use so much oil that BP won't notice. As mentioned above, chances are good you may be hurting an independent businessman in the process.

criminal charges should be brought up ASAP

Criminal charges for what?

Crimanal charges for the Obama administration who gaveBP a pass on environments and safety issues 10 days before the explosion?
Criminal charges for the employees of the MMS surfing pron, taking kickbacks, and being high on meth?

Seriously do you ever make posts that don't make you sound like a partisan hack? Partisanship is the most retarded aspect of politics because it forces you to leave your brain at the door.

Please elaborate on what criminal actions BP committed.
(Hint: there are none and no such charges will be brought)
