Dude, I would imagine as a parent they have to tell themselves anything they can to keep going. A couple of my friends, twin brothers, died in a DUI related car accident just a mile from their house. Their parents went temporarily dillussional, I kid you not. Then they twisted in their heads somehow to make sense of it (in their own heads). It didn't make sense, but it was worth not having the parents in a catatonic state for the rest of their existence.

The difference is that the parents of the twins weren't responsible whereas the parents of the 5 year old manslaughterer are.
