i've owned a few watches, never anything expensive. the best i have is a replica of a rolex, it looks just like the original, has the same 4-ticks-per-second movement, it's winded by wearing it, and it's extremely accurate. was 250 euro.LOL nixon...
it is jewelry, and some of us appreciate the work that goes into a well built mechanical movement.

i also owned nixon and diesel, and the nixon the banks i had was a piece of garbage - it didn't keep time (~10 minutes off per day) and the adjustment wheel pin broke off. the glass (supposedly tempered sapphire glass) scratched the first day on a subway ride. however, the chassis was gorgeous, and it was imho the best looking watch i have ever worn.
reason why i dont wear any of these, is that i actually need my watch to be accurate, to the minute. my train is a 08:34 and i can't show up at 8:36 and hope it to be there. and my phone keeps time way more accurately that this lump of metal on my wrist.
i would wear a watch now ONLY to go clubbing. and i dont go clubbing. it's only useful as a fashion item, because as timekeepers they suck. And no, im not gonna spend $3k to buy a watch that keep time and looks good.
And just like a $40 Timex, it keeps time. And with a Timex Indglo I can read it in the dark, much more functional.
and it was ... two grand?
Ah, a shot of color makes a difference. This is a better photo of it to show the colors
And it's absolutely not a no-name brand. It's a newer brand, yes, but they have a LOT of followers. They're also located in Glashutte so there's some history behind their location of manufacture.
well, the only thing i can say is, i hope for you that the watch increases in value. It was more than ($2000) actually. I bought it new from an authorized TAG dealer and I have the box and papers for it.
Because they are works of art and the height of workmanship. What's the fascination with mechanical watches? They are more inaccurate than Quartz movements and more maintenance. I'll take a good looking quartz watch over an identical looking mechanical watch any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
I've never seen a better definition of "diminishing returns" as the watch market. Anything more than a few hundred bucks and I'll never understand how to justify anything more just to tell time. Yes, I understand the craftsmanship that goes into a mechanical watch... but I just don't get it.

watches have two "values", a factual value, and a perceived value. for historical reasons these two have been linked, but it is less so these days. the factual value of the watch is that as an object, it tell the time, accurately. the usefulness of this, and therefore the value, is almost nothing these days, as smartphones do the same but better, and also you really need to buy a high end watch, in order to have it tell time accurately *always*.
the perceived value, is as an object of envy. call it art, power, macho, they are all the same emotion, which is "ooh look he has that object to prove he is better than me". (whether you feel this way or not, is irrelevant)
now, this perceived value changes depending on the beholder; if you work in business, say, constructions, or banking, a good brand watch will help prove that you are a serious person .. and i'm sure every social tribe has their list of "bestest to worstest" watches, with Rolex having been at the top for a long time.
(a moment of pause as i need to say that my friend Tony, watchmaker, has ripped a new one to rolex for being over-expensive without reason at all)
there will be people who love a rolex, and there will be people who worship a casio, because chelsea's jose mourino was once spotted wearing one. there will be girls in the disco who will rather you'd wore a Diesel or Nixon than a rolex, because those are the status symbol objects the recognize and therefore value.
it really depends who you need to impress with the perceived value, and some targets will respond to any big ol' brick of gold-colored metal. some other will need you to invest in rolex because it means reputation, while they might look down on someone who wears a more sophisticated watch, just because they do not recognize it.
finally some people will look down on you for wearing something too expensive.
i have had people both tell me that wearing a replica rolex was "good reason to never deal with that person", and that "it signifies the person values money and is therefore a smart man whom they'd do business with".
if you are one of those 0.1% of people who needs a watch for its original purpose, then, well, good choice.
