Lol, the Gearbox forums are imploding. It looks like they've taken it down at least twice tonight to clean up angry posts from customers pissed off that the pirates are playing the games before them.

I'm actually surprised by most of those posts, as if it was the first time.

There is a problem however, is that the PC version (retail) doesn't have a CD-Key, so the pirates can also play it on-line. That really brings the game back about a decade ago. At least other games that were pirated couldn't be played on-line since most CD-Keys provided for pirated copies only allowed the game to be installed and then played off-line, and the CD-Key wouldn't work on-line (most of the time anyway). This time around the legitimate buyers did get screwed entirely, but I for one take it with a grain of salt, I bought it and I'm happy I did.

This was not totally unexpected, and to be quite honest I applaud gearbox for not putting heavy DRM on it. People have complained for a while about DRM and how it hurts the customers who actually buy, well they didn't.

eh just bought mine. This is probably the only game I've bought in a long long time. Well, not that long, but atleast 6 months.

But they did put heavy DRM on it, by employing Securom complete with online an activation check. The retail version also requires that the physical CD be in the drive when it starts up. The problem is, they didn't employ the lightest and most effective DRM for a multiplayer game, a cd key. Basically, they skipped the easiest check against piracy and went straight to the heavier stuff.

I'm not against DRM or even Securom, but it just seems absurd to me that you would forgo the tried and true cd-key. It may not stop most pirates, but at least it will keep them off multiplayer outside of awkward hamachi setups.

i'm going to stay up for the midnight release, so if anyone wants to play, LMK. search for me on steam (steam email is the same as the one listed in my profile)

I'm not 100% certain, but I wouldn't hold my breath for a midnight release, I think they want to release it on all North-American time zones at the same exact moment, which means that they need to wait at least until about 6:00am in the morning before unlocking it.

But, as I said, I'm not basing this statement out of anything official, I'm just guessing that it won't happen at midnight, it's possible, but it would be surprising. As far as I can remember the last game I pre-ordered on Steam for which I had to wait an unlock to occur was Half-Life 2 and it unlocked at about 3:00am for the -05:00 Eastern Time zone.

But I have some hope, why not, let's hope for it indeed.

EDIT: Nice time paradox...

You quoted my post before I even posted it. I love these forums 🙂

oh wait, looks like its monday midnight / tuesday 12am, not 12:00am monday 🙁

I've read on the Gearbox forums that, supposedly (still not official) it will unlock at GMT -08:00, at Noon. That would mean 3:00 PM Eastern Time, and yes, that sucks. I could swear that H-L 2 was unlocked at 2:00 or 3:00 AM Eastern Time when it was released, I still clearly remember that it was night time still and that I should have been sleeping instead.

D2D has a counter on their page that would end at 1AM PST (5hrs from now), but the D2D Borderlands page says 1PM PST. Not sure why the 12hr discrepancy.

Well, looks like the game has unlocked for those that got it from retail early. Can't even download from D2D yet, no pre-loading was available.

Not from Steam. Still won't unlock until 12:00AM Pacific time.

Try 12pm PST 🙁

Yeah, that. Well, whatever. I'm in no rush either way- I'm pre-loaded and ready to go. So I'll play it Tuesday afternoon.

Who's idea was it to have work on Mondays? Shit. I just want to go home and touch this game inappropriately.
