********BORDERLANDS discussion thread*******

There's been some reviews out and the negative points are pretty much unanimous so far:

º Dumb A.I (all enemy types including bosses, even the final boss)
º World geometry / A.I path-finding issues (vehicle can get stuck on world geometry, A.I can spawn on top of structures or rocks and such without being able to move)
º World is "dead" / void of life outside of designated "enemy zones" (no random wandering enemies, they only spawn within specific zones à-la STALKER)
º Lackluster map (lack of details)
º No mini map overlay (always needs to open up the map menu and interrupt game-play)
º No trade system (exploitable "trading" between strangers, has to drop items on the ground, can be picked up by anyone including other players with whom you might have not intended to "trade" with)
º Cannot drop money to "buy" items from other players
º Zones are generally small and linear
º Each zones and sub-maps (caves, ruins, etc) have to be loaded separately à-la Oblivion and Fallout 3's cell system
º Only 1 class-specific skill per class, after which each skills feel pretty much the same (increase damage, resistance, etc, only with different percentages and names)
º Paper-thin "story", if it can even be called so (while the narrative of it is rare)

And some others I might have forgotten about. And the positive points, because apparently there are some (phew! I almost felt disappointed for a moment), are also generally the same, being that the procedurally generated loot system is truly working as intended, completely unpredictable and quite addictive (probably the main point of the game to start with), the graphics and general art style is well done and must be experienced first hand to truly appreciate it (videos supposedly don't to it justice), characters and enemies alike have superb animations including death ones (especially those for elemental damage types with a great particle effects system), and co-operation mode with friends is very fun.

The reviews I have read were all for the console version (probably the XBOX 360, for most of them, if not all of them), but I doubt that the PC version will magically have anything "fixed" or "better" at release, unless the so called "optimizations" for it (which is behind the decision to delay it by a week) will truly make it better than the console versions, to whatever extent "better" may end up be. That review for instance is the latest one I've read, but it resembles all others I've seen so far.

EDIT: Newer review here, I've just started to read it.

This game looks incredibly shit TBH. Also, totally unsurprised that the "xx million weapons" was complete bullshit.

But much of the variety in the guns come from slight statistical tweaks to how much damage they do, their rate of fire, their reload speed, whether or not they have a scope, and so on. But the weapons still break down into a handful of traditional classes, like combat rifle, sub-machine gun, sniper rifle, rocket launcher, pistol, revolver, and so on. And as you start finding better weapons and becoming proficient with them, it quickly feels like 95 percent of the guns you're finding are nothing more than vendor trash that only exists to be sold off for more money.

I would be willing to set up the purchase if no one else steps forward.

Game is awesome, i went ahead and picked up the 360 version last night until my PC copy unlocks on Steam (rental copy, I maybe just stop playing until the PC version hits, so I can experience most of it on the PC first). It's a hell of a lot of fun, especially with 2-3 people playing along with you. I got up to level 10 then decided to go to bed, but I could have sat there and played all night if I didn't have work today.

Great game, the 8-9/10 reviews are pretty much spot on, there are some issues, there's some AI weirdness to be sure, but I wouldn't say it's a game killer, no more than any other RPG or FPS I've played with average AI at least. I think the art direction is great, if you watch the videos before they changed over, they just looked like any other FPS out there. This looks like it's own game, and there's a lot of it.

Despite the haters that just come into this thread to bash a game they haven't played, I would highly recommend checking it out. Definitely looking forward to the PC version more since aiming with a gamepad is mediocre at best, and there are some pretty severe slowdowns in battle on the 360 version at least.

Jeff still gave it 4/5 (80%) and liked it enough to go through it a second time, when a 1st playthrough would have been enough for a review.

I wouldn't call that "incredibly shit" by any definition.

He also says:

"Borderlands' blend of first-person shooting and role-playing works because it puts the shooting first, resulting in a satisfying action game with enough depth and skill development to keep you hooked for 50 hours or more."

Only 50 hours of kickass gaming? Yeah, that sounds like it's shit alright.

Early reviews are invariably more favorable than the later ones. This game's average score will decline as people realise it's lame. Let the hype machine run its course, then we'll see how good it really is.

Hey - clearly you're not going to buy this game. So instead instead of trolling this thread, why don't you go someplace the fuck else?

Because people keep responding to him 😛 and he gets hard off ruining other people's fun

anything he types anything just reply

"lol Gayner"

Well, you know, I didn't actually like the change in the art direction at all, but I figure there's at least a good chance the pc version will be able to toggle off the outline. Preordered it.

Seems about right up my alley, really. Straightforward 'shoot things' with just enough Diablo loot-grabbing tossed in to make sure you never run completely out of things to do.

Course, I kind of expected that about Hellgate:London, but these guys aren't trying to toss in Diablo play styles in addition to the FPS elements. Should be enough to ensure it's more solid in the gameplay department....not that it really takes much to be more solid then HG:L there.

What the hell is wrong with you? Just out of curiosity, so I can avoid being a complete douche bag when people are excited about something I don't care for?

Enough, you don't like it, we get it, move on, there are other threads for you to frequent that have nothing to do with Borderlands.

I wouldn't mind picking this game up on PC but cell shading just kills it for me.

I have nothing to say about this game or its art, but I do have to say that it is not cel-shaded. People should really know this by now, edge textures do not mean cel-shading. Killer7 = cel-shaded, Prince of Persia '08 = not cel-shaded.

Okay sorry that "Cel-shaded look". I remember seeing a trailer for this a long time ago and it didn't look like it does now or maybe the trailer was just a CG trailer. This is also one of the reasons I didn't even bother trying the new Prince of Persia.

They changed the entire art direction/style midway through development, so the trailer you saw likely featured the original style, which was more realistic looking. I have no real preference for either style; the recently released gameplay videos look interesting enough for me to give this game a try.

Don't know if this is the place for it but I'd like to go in on a 4-pack for this game. Anyone looking for another or interested?
