PlanetSide, oh how I miss thee.

QFT. The only true MMOFPS ever created. And SOE will never make a sequel.

On another note, I think developers are coming at this the wrong way. They need to make the FPS first, then worry about the RPG or MMO parts. Otherwise, it will always have that clunky RPG feel.

Never say never
On September 25, 2009, Sony Online Entertainment sent a mass e-mail to current and old PlanetSide subscribers, asking to fill a survey that would help SOE design the next generation PlanetSide. "We plan to expand the PlanetSide® universe with another game and we need your help with the design. After all, who knows the game better than you, our customers, the people who actually play it! Don't worry about the original PlanetSide, it isn't going anywhere." In addition, SOE has registered the domain www.planetside2.com on September 21, 2009.

I hate cell shading. Looks like it should be a free flash game when they use cell shading. Doesn't really look fun anyway.

If you compare a game like Zelda Windwaker or Afro Samurai, you'll see this isn't cell shaded. Each texture in BL is hand painted and then rendered in game. There's no flat, single coloring here, it's a completely different technique from cell shading.

It's easy to label it cell shading until you see an actual cell shaded game in action, and then this looks vastly better.

As for not being fun, what? LOL

I think I could get over the goofy graphics but all those numbers constantly popping up all over the screen would kill it for me.

According to the devs there will be no demo for it, at least not "before launch", as they put it, probably due to its open-ended world nature (Oblivion, Fallout 3, Stalker, etc, those games never had demos for that reason), but it would still be nice to have one, even after launch, since lots of people might buy it when its price is reduced and the post-release demo might help for that, that's for sure. I for one must admit that the more I read and see about Borderlands and the more I become interested. It's probably because I miss playing FPS games, the only other one I see myself playing due to having some interest towards it is STALKER: Call of Pripyat, but other than that...

I don't know about you, but the only game I've played that has followed the Diablo system but with a FPS twist is Hellgate: London, which sucked ass. Basically, I'm just hoping for a version of HG:L that doesn't suck ass.

QFT

In relation to Hellgate, I was in the alpha forums posting links to Borderlands saying Borderlands will probably be much better. And back then there were only 500k guns.

all this can be rendered moot by the fact that it still looks stupid. and i don't want to play games that look stupid, despite how much effort it might have taken [to ruin the graphics]. it does not work for this type of game.

edit- if they could've done it without the godawful inch thick black lines, it would've been a lot better.

Yea, this reminds me of the Cartoon render mode in FarCry more then the cell shading in WindWaker, although much more advanced.

Besides, I don't think this game is ment to be taken as a serious FPS/RPG. I mean, come'on, you've got a foul mouthed talking robot for gods sake.

I dunno, I'm taking it pretty seriously. As this is the first game Gearbox has ever done on their own without it being a port of a game from another platform, and Randy Pitchford is a mad hardcore gamer whose roots go deep in the modding community, I think this could be a huge sleeper hit.

That's not quite what I meant. I don't think the gameworld itself is meant to be serious/realisitic. I mean let's face it, this isn't Rage or something like that. You have firebullet shooting SMG's and god knows what else kind of weapons. It seems more like a Bad Company type of game, where there is a story, but it's humor driven, for which I think this style of graphics works fine.

but the question is - will the servers be centrally located someplace? Or will it be a host-your-own-cheatfest?

Being a port, I think we all know the answer 🙁. I'm just hoping that they at least make the PC interface smooth enough for me to find my friends easily and not have connection issues.

Eh, the fact that they are releasing on consoles a week before the PC tells me where their priorities are.

Consoles require a lot less work to optimize and find bugs. The fact that the delay is less than a week should say exactly where their priorities are.
