How to open unopen-able boxes ? So there are these boxes with green lights; such as when I resecue Roland which look like safes; I click on them (E command) and the green light blinks red a couple of times but they don't open (there is also a cage on the first floor below your safe after a line of safes that does the same thing) how do you open these (or are they unopenable?)

Some containers you have to melee first ( "v" key). Not sure if those are the ones you are talking about. In other cases, you may have to do a certain quest to open them. For instance the red chest behind the bars in the headquarters in Sanctuary can only be accessed after a certain point in the main quest, even though the light is green and you would think you can open the bars to get to the chest any time.

For these the 'v' key showed up and I tried 'v' and then 'e' but they still did not open - maybe i did it wrong? These are in the area for roland before you reach him the first time - as far as I could tell they were not quest related.

I'll go back and try again if I can remember the name of the area :)

When you rescued Roland, that red Dahl chest (I think it's a Dahl chest) in the jail cell near him can be opened. When facing where Roland is/was, there should be a ladder on your right. You go up there and you have to run down these pipes which lead to a room with a number of switches. You flick those switches and the cell doors will all open. There's also another green chest up there near those pipes, at the end of a catwalk up there.

I can't believe it took me this long to get the game. I think the animated or cell shaded graphics turned me off initially, but since I bought the game (and all the DLC) during the Steam summer sale, I can't stop playing it..

The gameplay is really addictive, and can be challenging at times. I'm using Axton the Commando and so far, I'm really liking him and his combination of tactical and brute force skills and abilities.

Which class do you think is the strongest class in the game for solo play?

I even put it in my cart a couple times during the summer sale, but those cell-shaded graphics just made me take it right back out. I'm not that huge a graphics whore - I play Fallout 3 & New Vegas for Pete's sake - but that comic book look is just more than I can hack.

It's pretty much unequivocally Salvador, The Gunzerker. This is talking about at lvl 61, in UVHM, with good gear, etc. They're all pretty good, but the Gunzerker has some quirks about him, and just the perfect setup to smash faces in with the greatest of ease.

What lvl is your Commando currently?

Borderlands is an amazing game. It would probably only be about half as popular without the Comic book style.

yeah if you get gunzerker towards the end with dual double penetrating unkempt harolds, that's a strong build.

I highly recommend getting the game. After actually playing the game, I think the cell shaded graphics suit the game and it's art style more than anything else.

While the game's graphics are basic compared to the likes of Crysis 3, Metro Last Light etcetera, the game is still CHOCK FULL of graphical details and effects; especially if you have PhysX enabled. And it's not difficult to max it out..

The game also has tons of playability. The main campaign is supposedly very long (around 60 hours), plus if if you get the DLC, that adds even more bang for your buck with additional quests and classes..

I'm only level 16 currently. I have to watch my playtime as I have four children. But I logged about 5 hours straight last night when everyone was asleep

I'm playing on Normal for my first run through. So far, Axton is handling it easily now that I've gotten the hang of him. That turret is one powerful ally once you start upgrading it..

shame, because you're missing out on some of the best gameplay of the year, and certainly the funniest script.

Also, Borderlands would be terrible without that art style.

I haven't tried gunzerker yet, but I have a Siren at 47, near the end of TVHM, and my Assassin at ~34 at Sanctuary in TVHM. I also, briefly, have started a Mechromancer.

From what I have heard before game launch and recently, Mechromancer is a bit too legit--pretty much designed to be "easy mode" --I think Randy or whoever called her "Your girlfriend's class" and took a lot of flack for that comment....

I started with Siren because Siren was *(&^%ing amazing in BL1 so I wanted more of that action. It's still fun in BL2, but not quite the same. Assassin however, if you go all Bloodshed with Many Must Fall and, uh, the middle tier--full mele build--that is OP. Yes, I'm only level 34, but I've found that you can run this build, even while leveling, and just make mincemeat of most of the playthrough. The Warrior is tough with that kind of build, sure...just bring the right guns :D

There are things I prefer about BL1: the guns were much better, more diverse, and more useful imo (I think slag is just silly) and for my money the loss of Phasewalk still makes me cry--but Borderlands 2 does many thing better:

--real story (no real need to play BL1 for it; but it helps particularly with character development and attachment)
--classes are more balanced. BL1 was basically Siren and/or Hunter (Mordecai). Commando was OK...but the big mele dude was just useless. Every class in BL2 is very much playable--plus there are 2 more classes that aren't simply throwaways.
--the gun play is still great, but the reality is that you have less guns (there is less variability in gun mods as some of the components are fixed for certain types--as compared to BL1 where all components were RNG...It's MATH, PEOPLE!)
--Dialogue and humor is out of control. I've played through the campaign 3.5 times now and I still laugh. It's the details--spend time in various bandit camps and listen to all the different types of bandits go about their chatter.

Try to befriend a Goliath. You will never be happier.

Understood, but I just can't hack it. It's like third person games - that's like watching someone else play a video game without actually having someone else to talk with. Some things I just can't get into. If I have to deal with third person or cell-shaded/anime-style games, I'll just do something else.

Hah!

I HATE FPS but I love Borderlands.

go figure.

(I wish all such games were 3rd person restricted. seriously: I think those who play Elder Scrolls games in first person, for example, are lacking a few chromosomes)

Different strokes. I'm seriously decoupled from the character as a character or separate entity. Last time I played through Fallout New Vegas I created a female character intending to play a different style, but of course I played the same old style I always play. Couple of times I've caught myself thinking "Damn it, who's that whiny bitch crying out through every fight?" After looking around, I'll realize it's me.

Back when I used to play third person games I've actually caught myself just watching my motionless character, waiting for it to move, or else wondering why that idiot isn't fighting back. I just cannot relate to video game characters; I just react and think tactically without any real awareness of the character. On the other hand, I catch myself giving food and water to followers, even though I know they don't need either. And my wife laughed at me for replaying an hour of gameplay after a glitch caused Dogmeat to get stuck in a room and I refused to just leave him there and create another via the console. "Yes, dear, I do know he's not real. Doesn't mean I'm gonna be a dick and just leave him there alone."

If there's ever a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Video Game Animals & Followers, I'm there, even though I literally could not care less what other players do with the same characters. Life's too short to be a dick just because there are no consequences.

I played siren first, and was mildly disappointed as well compared to the first game. I have played all the characters now, at least through normal difficulty, and I think they are all pretty well balanced. Each one has some really strong powers, but weaknesses as well. I saved Salvador till last because gunzerker was not that great in the first game, but I think it is a really strong build in this game. I have so many badass bonuses that any character is pretty strong up to UVHM mode, then it gets dicey. I just get sick of dying over and over because you can empty a clip from a powerful weapon and barely deplete a shield, much less do any damage. I also dont particularly like using slag, and that is a necessity in UVHM.

And I havent been able to solo any of the raid bosses yet. I am trying to get my Salvador over-levelled and go back to normal difficulty and beat some of them in the DLC. Just uses up your eridium too fast if you keep dying against them.

Really fun game though, I agree. I probably have more hours into this game than any other I have played.

Well, like Mr. Hammer, you will be too legit to quit once you realize that drops all of your Anarchy stacks.

Also, the Mechromancer certainly isn't "easy mode." Anarchy gives you a ton of damage, but you can't hit the broad side of a barn with the accuracy reduction. You're heavily dependent upon the reflection talent to help reduce that huge penalty, but you're severely gimped in outside environments. You know how painful it is trying to kill a Super Badass Surveyor as a Mechromancer with 300 stacks of Anarchy? You can't even hit it. The only way to kill it is to shoot the ground as it dives at you, or hope the AI screws up causing it to just sit there.

The main campaign is supposedly very long (around 60 hours)

The campaign isn't that long. You will get a longer playtime if you consider that you're supposed to play the same content three times to "do it right."
