I just picked this up at GMG without playing or knowing anything about the first. Should I read anything about it or just go in blind?

Jump in blind. BL1 is so bloody cheap though... It's up to you.

Just go in blind imho. I still want to finish the first game before i start playing part 2 but the best part of this game is figuring out fun builds and finding awesome loot. Online co-op is the best way to play IMHO. In the first game you could respec your stats for cheap so you couldn't really ruin your character in any way.

Having not played the original at all, I'm finding that I don't get Borderlands 2 at all. It's like someone crossed Diablo with Call of Duty; it's all of the inane inventory management combined with the bad gunplay. I'm always near death and I never feel like I'm winning since the enemies are just as powerful as I am.:|

Virge, that is how I felt at the beginning of the original. Once you get some experience, level up a bit, and get some guns that are keepers, you'll start enjoying it more.

Played an hour or two this morning and really enjoying it. The gameplay closely tracks the original's but I've already seen a few new additions -- the 'reloading grenade' and new grenade types come to mind -- that are a lot of fun. Moreover, the addition of the reputation system seems like it will be fun as it really does track all sorts of different in-game activities and achievements. The writing is still clever and, although the style of humor is the same as the original, is does not come across as repetitive or hackneyed.

Although the game wasn't designed to be something that pushed the frontiers of game graphics, the art style is very well done and there are some pretty impressive vistas/lighting effects. The addition of a day/night cycle is also interesting and allows for the some of the lighting effects to be put on show. The only quibble I would have on the graphics front is that some of the textures are lacking in quality but I don't think they are so bad they detract from the experience -- a hi-res texture pack would be appreciated though ;)

Am planning on trying Co-op/matchmaking later this evening and seeing how that works. Figure I'll get better loot that way.

Oh, and for those asking, you can play BL2 without having played the original as the stories are mostly independent of one another. There are, however, many references/characters/jokes for which you'll have a higher appreciation if you had played the first and then the second rather than jumping into the second right away.

I think you do get it, just don't like it (which is fine). That's exactly the point... it's a giant loot fest shooter that does co-op quite well which is exactly what made Diablo 2 so popular. Instead of an isometric view and you fast clicking enemies, it's an FPS with different weapon types. It's better with people, and even better when you know them and all start the game together and progress as a team.

can you still preorder?

No, unfortunately, you cannot get the pre-order bonuses anymore. Since the game had such good discounts prior to release and pre-ordering gave you a post-release DLC for free, I would have recommended to buy it if you were on the fence.

I dont even know what the season pass is....time to google.

Like Borderlands 1, Borderlands 2 will have four DLC story add-ons. Note that these are different from the free post-release DLC (Mechromancer class) that you get for pre-ordering. The season pass is essentially paying ahead of time for all four DLC. By doing this, you get a $10 discount over the normal price (4 DLC x $10 each vs. $30). However, on Green Man Gaming, you can apply their 20% discount code to the season pass and save even more.

another question...if anyoen can chime in. I loved the hunter and used Pistols primarily in the first one. Is there a class thats closest to hunter in this? And uses pistols?

Anyone can use pistols. Very few classes have talents that boost a specific weapon type, but I'm pretty certain that the Gunzerker has a pistol talent. You might like him since his special ability allows him to dual-wield guns, which means you can dual-wield pistols.

are physX effects worth it?

I thought they looked pretty good in the PhysX video that nVidia put out. I have a GeForce GTX 680, so I'll be turning them on! I saw that a GeForce 660 could handle the game at about 30 FPS with PhysX on, but I'm not sure what resolution that was at. I'll be playing at 1080p with pretty much everything jacked up.

How is it without post-AA? Have you tried FXAA, how does it look?

FXAA actually works pretty well with not much blur and dealing with most aliasing. That said, I have found some AA flags that work ;)

http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=33981641&postcount=97

Also the physx is not really a big performance killer compared to some other titles that used it. In BAC when heavy physx effects took place you could literally see your framerate drop 20, not so in BL2.

The inventory systems sucked in the first one and still does in the second. No idea why they did not improve on it. It's more fun played in multiplayer and like firebird said, you need to get some decent guns and it makes it more enjoyable.

Yeah I saw your post in VC&G, too bad my GTX 460 will probably barely be able to handle the game let alone with AA and Physx. Haven't bought the game yet, so maybe I should just buy a new card and get the game bundled... I've already spent so much money this month, must resist.

What would be a decent gun? I'm going Gunzerker with assault rifles, but it doesn't seem to be getting me much. Plus I'm always running out of ammo.

Did you play any of the Action RPGs? Starting out in Borderlands isn't much different than them, because you start off with almost nothing and it takes time to build everything up. When I started playing Diablo III, the most painful part for me was the fact that I had no decent skills, and I had to take whatever skill Blizzard deemed that I should unlock at that level. For example, I find Barbarians are more fun when you can charge and jump into shit, and just wreak havoc, but you don't get that stuff until around level 15-20.

Looking at this in terms of Borderlands, you do kind of need a decent weapon and some talents that help boost your abilities. Now, the term "decent weapon" is highly subjective. You mention having Assault Rifles, which I'm not a huge fan of. I haven't had a chance to play Borderlands 2 yet, but in the original, most Assault Rifles were burst fire (Vladof brand were fully automatic) and didn't provide much of an advantage over SMGs. Also, don't be afraid to swap weapons because you run out of ammo. Sometimes, ammo can seem like a rather precious resource, and at times, you might think you're playing Resident Evil! :p A few things to keep in mind...

1) Try and upgrade your ammo capacity. This is done in Borderlands 2 using Eridium.
2) Keep different weapon types in your bag just in case. You don't need a huge slew of weapons, but a couple good guns of varying types is usually sufficient.
3) Keep stocked up on ammo, and don't be afraid to back track if you're close to an ammo vending machine.
4) Ammo regeneration class mods are your bestest friend in the whole world.

PC ELITIST ATTITUDE..STRIKE 3!

It runs pretty smooth. While recording I'm getting around 70-80fps. Without recording, its close to double. All on high, 16AF, FXAA, AO, etc. I wish there more AA options, but FXAA is good enough I guess. FOV was set to 90 by default. Good job on the PC version!

Shooting feels tight, although the sprinting sometimes feels like it doesnt kick in. And because of the loot, it has that feeling of playing Doom for Wolfenstein where you search every inch of the map looking for goodies. This should be a lot of fun.

Not really. I'm not a fan of isometric medieval fantasy games, which is most ARPGs right there. But thanks for the rest of the advice.:)

does BL2 have the weapon skill levels that force you to use one weapon the whole time? I didnt like that about the first one.
