Blizzard strikes gold on every title. The fact they've conquered the MMO world doesn't surprise me at all. Every game they've put out in the last 5 years has been a huge hit.

How big is the development team? 10? 15? 25? Multiply that by what? $50, $75, $100k/year? Times how many years so far? 3? 4? 5? Plus advertising. Plus servers. Plus support. Plus bandwidth. Plus new content.

No doubt that WoW make Blizzard money (isn't that the point of every single business endeavor?), but I don't think they are exactly swimming in a giant vault of money like Scrooge McDuck.

fire that murloc :p

i seriously think blizz makes some nice change off WoW. But i think they also spend a good chunk of money on wow too. I think they could stand to .. you know.. hire more GM's, CM's, Development, INTERNAL TESTING (BWL WAS FRIGGIN TERRIBLE CONSIDERING THE 'INTERNAL TESTING').

if i said i had been working on a project for 3 months, and then you found three MAJOR bugs within the first 2 lines of the project, i bet you'd be like "umm... so.... wtf?"

anyway despite all i hate the game is still entertaining, and as long as it is : blizz can have my 15 bucks a month. When it no longer is? i'll stop paying.

Blizzard is definitely raking it in.

Sure the initial costs were very high (years of development, advertisement, etc) but those costs will be covered...and then some.

So that leaves the monthly maintenence costs, employee payroll, and I dunno what else, but if they generate revenues of $20 million/month, I'm sure only a fraction of the total revenue goes to those costs. The rest is PROFIT!!!!

Blizzard has a huge staff akin to big production movie crews. Although they make a nice profit off of WOW, I think most of it is dispersed through payroll.

Are you 100% sure that battle.net games are played on the user's computers?
BTW Guild wars is a semi MMORPG and there is no monthly cost for it at all.

From what I heard, Guild Wars is tryiing to soften the impact of no monthly fee by charging a fair amount and having often releases of their expansion packs.

lets hope an expansion pack comes soon, and their cost of 50 dollars is the regular price for any other game.

This is much more common than most people think. I know several people on AT alone who have lost their jobs due to EQ or WoW. It's something most people aren't proud of, and something they'd probably never post.

No kidding. I have someone working for me who's on very thin ice because of WoW.

There was an article recently in the newest issue of IEEE Spectrum that talked about what it takes to run Everquest. Now, I know WoW isn't as popular as Everquest, but the things that go into running these games are amazing. Every update takes up bandwith costs, they have amazingly fast servers, they are adding content to their game all the time. It's crazy stuff. So paying $13 a month I would imagine doesn't earn them as much profit as one might think.

Um your wrong too.. you do know WoW broke EVERY single sales and subscription record to date..
it eclipsed even EQ1 within its first 4 months...
for having the most active subscriptions

I didn't realize that WoW broke Everquest's record, but thanks for correcting me on that. I was just trying to back up my claim with the only real data I knew of, which was an article about Everquest.

they released the tuesday before turkey day.

someone on ATOT had a mapquest map with an outline of how many people were at that midnight release at fry's. It was nuts

they even had an armed guard i think watching the truck with extra copies of the game to keep up with demand. In case the nerds got rowdy. But then it only takes one guy apparently to handle 6000 nerds :p

the PvE grind isnt that bad. I hear it is not as fast as DAoC, but i know it is MUCH slower than L2 or EQ1/2. Priest is the worst to pve also if you are soloing, but good luck!!~

Didn't Vivendi finance the development costs? If so I imagine they get a very fat chunk of the profits. I won't even get into the bad things I've heard about vivendi.
