Are you 100% sure that battle.net games are played on the user's computers?
BTW Guild wars is a semi MMORPG and there is no monthly cost for it at all.
From what I heard, Guild Wars is tryiing to soften the impact of no monthly fee by charging a fair amount and having often releases of their expansion packs.

I know someone who quit their job because of this game, WoW a helluva drug.
This is much more common than most people think. I know several people on AT alone who have lost their jobs due to EQ or WoW. It's something most people aren't proud of, and something they'd probably never post.

Blizzard strikes gold on every title. The fact they've conquered the MMO world doesn't surprise me at all. Every game they've put out in the last 5 years has been a huge hit.

There was an article recently in the newest issue of IEEE Spectrum that talked about what it takes to run Everquest. Now, I know WoW isn't as popular as Everquest, but the things that go into running these games are amazing. Every update takes up bandwith costs, they have amazingly fast servers, they are adding content to their game all the time. It's crazy stuff. So paying $13 a month I would imagine doesn't earn them as much profit as one might think.
Um your wrong too.. you do know WoW broke EVERY single sales and subscription record to date..
it eclipsed even EQ1 within its first 4 months...
for having the most active subscriptions

I didn't realize that WoW broke Everquest's record, but thanks for correcting me on that. I was just trying to back up my claim with the only real data I knew of, which was an article about Everquest.

Blizzard is definitely raking it in.
Sure the initial costs were very high (years of development, advertisement, etc) but those costs will be covered...and then some.
So that leaves the monthly maintenence costs, employee payroll, and I dunno what else, but if they generate revenues of $20 million/month, I'm sure only a fraction of the total revenue goes to those costs. The rest is PROFIT!!!!
