Ordinary bio class for 48 minutes...
Then the last few minutes is the professor telling the class that they have tracked down the student that stole his laptop with the intention of getting a copy of the exam.
He goes on to say that they tracked him down using tracking the wireless transmissions from the laptop and such
He says that there is also a ton of sensitive material on the laptop and that whoever stole it could soon be in enough trouble to get significant time in federal prison
thx, but that's it ? Did someone get up and leave ?

Nobody got up, but the speech was very scary sounding.

eew vlsb. Actually I'll miss it too... I think I took that class. Whether or not the prof was telling the truth, his speech was pretty intimidating.

Didn't he first say that microsoft called him and asked him why there were two copies of his winxp on different ip addresses? when does MS ever do that? If so, I would bet that pirating would be a LOT less than it is now. Another thing, if so many law agencies are interested in the person who stole the notebook... and they have witnesses... and they have a partial photograph, wouldn't the authorities go ahead and arrest the kid?

anyways, that sucks for the professor, hopefully he gets his notebook back

edit: i hope he gets his notebook back with his data

I think it's mostly BS. Prof is sweating out the fact that he lost a laptop that probably contains some sensitive data and it's his butt on the line with his consulting work. Most of that threat is just smoke, no actual heat.

I think that the prof is liable. What are the chances that when/if the guy turns in the lappy that the prof gets him booted from school? Pretty high I think. Either way if caught this students academic life is over at Cal.

agreed. The prof sounded pissed but his voice was also quivering in the video so I sense BS. sorry to hear about his lappy being stolen but he has nothing. tansponders, NIH grants, Microsoft tracking, witnesses, SEC, research companies - overkill - if he had something, the dude would be caught already. The prof. got owned and he over-reached in trying to bring down the pain on the guy. So I deduct 10 points from his speech.
Buy a $20 laptop lock.

just install real. its not so bad anymore. yes i know they were sh*t monkeys in the past.

as for transponder, i'm not sure those exist:p maybe some call home software when connect to net yes..

guy shoulda gotten finger print protection if he had such valuable data. his threats sound like bluffs.

Am I a nerd if I watched a large part of the video and enjoyed the touchup on bio? I'm thinking yes.

I wonder if this is a case of industrial espionage or just some thief looking for beer money from the sale of stolen goods?

i am bored at work. so for those who cant see it, this is what was said:

i have a message for one person in this audience, i am sorry that the rest of you have to sit through this. as you know my computer was stolen in my last lecture the thief was apparently wanting to betray everyone's trust was after the exam....the thief was smart to not plug the computer in the campus network, but the thief was not smart enough to do three things:

1)he was not smart enough to immediately removed windows. i installed the same version of windows in an earlier computer and within 15 minutes the people in redmond washington were very interested to know why it was that same version of windows was being signalled to them from two different computers.
2&3)the thief also did not inactive either the wireless card or the transponder in that computer. within about an hour there was a signal from various places around campus. this allowed us to track exactly where that computer went and every time it was turned on.

i am not particularly concerned about the computer, but the thief who thought he was only stealing an exam cause presently, we think, probably still in possession of three different kinds of data, any one of which can send this man, this young boy, actually, to federal prison, not a good place for a young boy to be.

you are in possession of data from a hundred million dollar trial sponsored by the nih from which i am a consultant. ...this involves one of the largest companies on the planet. the nih investigates these things through the fbi, they have been identified, have been notified about this problem.

you are in possession of trade secrets from a fortune...company, the largest one in the country which i consult for. the federal trade communications is very interested in this, federal marshals are the people who handle that.

you are in possession of proprietary data from a pre-public company planning an ipo. the securities & exchange commission is very interested in this, and i dont even know what branch of law enforcement they use.

your academic career is about to come to an end. you are facing very serious charges with the probability of very serious time. at this point, there is very little that anybody can do for you. the one thing that you can do for yourself is to somehow prove that the integrity of the data which you possess has not been corrupted or copied. ironically, i am the only person on the planet that can come to your aid because i am the only person that can tell whether the data that was on that computer are still on that computer. you will have to find a way of hoping that if you have copied anything that you prove you have only one copy of whatever was made.

i am tied up all this afternoon, i am out of town all of next week. you have until 11:55 to return the computer and whatever copies you've made to my office as i am the only hope you got for staying out of deeper trouble than you are any student that i have ever known has ever been in.

i apologize for the rest of you to have to bring up this distasteful matter, but i will point out that we have a partial image of the person, we have two eyewitnesses, with the transponder data, we're going to get this person. thank you.
